Book excerpt: Excerpt from Subsidence Resulting From Mining The subject of the subsidence of the earth's crust as a result of underground excavation due to mining has attracted Widespread attention for some years past, but particularly during recent years. With the extension of mining and the increased value of the surface above the mines in many localities, the growth of towns in mining regions, and the extension of railroads over mining properties, the subject is one that will be of increasing interest as time goes on, not alone to those engaged in mining coal and ores, but to the railroads, municipalities, and other owners and users of the surface that may be affected by mining opera tions. That the subject is not one of mere local interest is shown by the widespread distribution of surface subsidence as described in the follow ing pages. This bulletin has been prepared not with a View of bringing forward any new theories in regard to the subject, but it is in the nature of a reconnoissance and a statement of present knowledge of the subject, based upon the literature available up to the present time. It and a com panion preliminary Cooperation bulletin on subsidence in Illinois by Dr. Young, which will be issued by the Illinois Geological Survey, are intended as studies upon which to base a detailed cooperative investiga tion of. Almost one - half of the coal is being left in the ground and made unavailable for future mining, and in some places a large part of this abandoned coal is left because the mine operators fear that by removing a larger per centage they may cause surface subsidence and be required to pay damages out of proportion to the real value of the surface. In many places the surface may be restored at little expense. But until the prevailing conditions are known accurately and the essential facts are understood and studied, the State cannot consider or propose meas ures to relieve the mining industry of this severe burden. When the German edition was almost out of print, Springer-Verlag decided to bring out a new edition, this time in English. For this English version the text has been thoroughly revised, enlarged, and sup plemented by over 100 new figures. The book deals with the current state of international knowl edge on strata and ground movement over mine workings, with its damaging effects on mine shafts and the land surface, and with measures for regulating mining damage in law and reducing it in practice. Discussion begins with the mine excavation underground - the cause - and ends with the damage to surface structure- the effect. Methods of roof control, including the subject of rock bursts, are not discussed, since that is a field concerned more with the safety of underground workings than with minimizing damage at the surface. Of the 500 literature references in the German edi tion, only the more important for an international readership have been retained, but no value judgement on the many pUblica tions not mentioned should be read into this. The book is principally intended as a working aid for the mine surveyor, the mining engineer, the architect, and the civil engineer. For the student and the post-graduate researcher, it of fers a summary and guide to this whole field of knowledge.
