Book Undersea Vehicles and National Needs

Download or read book Undersea Vehicles and National Needs written by Committee on Undersea Vehicles and National Needs and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-12-03 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States faces decisions requiring information about the oceans in vastly expanded scales of time and space and from oceanic sectors not accessible with the suite of tools now used by scientists and engineers. Advances in guidance and control, communications, sensors, and other technologies for undersea vehicles can provide an opportunity to understand the oceans' influence on the energy and chemical balance that sustains humankind and to manage and deliver resources from and beneath the sea. This book assesses the state of undersea vehicle technology and opportunities for vehicle applications in science and industry. It provides guidance about vehicle subsystem development priorities and describes how national research can be focused most effectively.

Book Technology and Applications of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles

Download or read book Technology and Applications of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles written by Gwyn Griffiths and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-11-28 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oceans are a hostile environment, and gathering information on deep-sea life and the seabed is incredibly difficult. Autonomous underwater vehicles are robot submarines that are revolutionizing the way in which researchers and industry obtain data. Advances in technology have resulted in capable vehicles that have made new discoveries on how the oceans work, and have dramatically reduced the cost to industry of surveying the seabed. Technology and Applications of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles describes the technologies that have made this happen, as well as a host of applications from fish abundance studies to finding diamonds beneath the sea. There is tremendous scope for further innovation beyond the topics discussed, and this book will help the next generation of engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government laboratories, to deliver those advances.

Download or read book Opening the Great Depths written by Norman C Polmar and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed by French physicist Auguste Piccard and his son Jacques, the bathyscaph Trieste was a scientific marvel that allowed unprecedented scientific, technical, and military feats in the ocean depths. France and the United States both acquired and subsequently developed variants of the original bathyscaph. While both France and the United States employed the bathyscaph as a tool for scientific investigation of the deepest ocean depths, the U.S. Navy developed and employed the Trieste for military missions as well. From its earliest years, participants in the Trieste program realized that they were making history, blazing a trail into previously unexplored and unexploited depths, developing new capabilities and opening a new frontier. Comparisons with developments in space and the space-race between the United States and the Soviet Union often were made concerning the Trieste program and contemporary developments in undersea technologies and capabilities. The Trieste opened the entire oceans to exploration, exploitation, and operations. The bathyscaph was a first-generation system, a "Model-T" that spawned an entirely new industry and encouraged new concepts for deep-ocean naval operations. Advances in deep-sea technologies lacked the "gee-whiz" factor of the concurrent space race, but were highly significant in the development of new technology, new knowledge, and new military capabilities. Opening the Great Depths is the story of the three Trieste deep-ocean vehicles, their officers and enlisted men, and the civilians, often told in their own words, documenting for the first time the earliest years of humanity's probing into Earth's final frontier.

Book Relation Between Testing and Performance of Structures for Deep Sea Vehicles

Download or read book Relation Between Testing and Performance of Structures for Deep Sea Vehicles written by Ralph B. Allnutt and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increased military, commercial, and scientific interest in the use of deeper diving vehicles to explore, exploit, and transport at deep ocean depths. Stronger and more weight-efficient materials and structures are required for the pressure hulls of these vehicles. The report discusses the balance between design-materials-fabricability and experimental verification. The various types of scaled model tests used to provide the required experimental verification are described. Model test results are compared with analytical predictions and full-scale prototype behavior. Submarine hull concepts and materials that may be necessary in the not too distant future are described. New concepts of simple specimen design and testing which may be required prior to utilization in model tests are also discussed. (Author).
