This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exchange of information in the field of earth sciences is increasingly needed to stay informed about advances. However, the continuous increase in the number of journal articles and books is very noticeable, while the available time to keep up is decreasing. Such a large flow of information commonly necessitates professionals to search selec tively for material and special publications in one's sub-discipline that have more specific coverage. In addition to surveying research needs, earth scientists working in a pure or applied research environment collect and produce information that often is of interest to the much larger group of industry-employed geologists and geophysicists, to professionals employed by agencies, and to students. To accommodate this exchange of needed information, Springer-Verlag is launching a monograph series entitled "Frontiers in Sedimentary Geology." This series will cover a number of subjects related to sediments and sedimentary rocks in a manner that both the researcher and the industrially oriented earth scientist can use constructively. Pub lications in this monograph series may fit one or more of the following main categories: Topical A topical subject will cover either the different aspects of a selected environment of deposition, or present a world tour of a particular depositional environment to dem onstrate its variability and its commonalities. The author(s) or editor(s) accepts the responsibility to guide the reader as to the state of knowledge, rather than providing a set of independent chapters.

Book Submarine Canyons Human Connections to the Deep Sea

Download or read book Submarine Canyons Human Connections to the Deep Sea written by Awantha Dissanayake and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submarine canyons are some of the most prominent features of the world’s continental margins creating heterogeneity in the terrain, influencing local and global hydrodynamics and often creating hotspots of biodiversity, both on the seafloor and in the water column. Canyon morphology and location on the margin make them the main conduits between the shelf and the deep sea, focussing the transport of sediments, organic matter, nutrients, and increasingly pollutants and litter. The focus of this Research Topic is highlighting human connections to the deep sea. Previous studies have underlined the need for a better understanding of anthropogenic impacts on submarine canyons, and how they fast-track our human footprint to the deep sea. Besides a better assessment of the extent and nature of human activities in submarine canyons, it primarily requires a holistic understanding of submarine canyons as systems, governed by the interplay of geological, sedimentological, oceanographic and biological processes. The goal of this Research Topic, based on the recent INCISE2021 International Symposium on Submarine Canyons, aims to fill that gap by gathering the latest observations of human activities in submarine canyons, the latest insights in submarine canyon functioning, and the latest interpretations on how the two are influencing each other.

Book Depositional Sedimentary Environments

Download or read book Depositional Sedimentary Environments written by H.-E. Reineck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written with the aim of compiling from modern environments information that can be useful in the reconstruction of ancient environments. It is intended for all those interested in recognizing depositional environments. The study of sediments includes investigations of various aspects of sediments. This needs a study by standard methods. Methods of study have not been included, as many textbooks exist on the subject. However, the importance of various results obtained from such investigations has been discussed, as far as these results can be helpful in environ mental reconstruction. Special attention is given to information that has accumulated during the last decades on the mode of genesis of various sedimentary features and their distribution in present-day environments. As far as possible, existing terminology has been used. How ever, in several cases new simple groupings and classifications have been proposed. In making classification, generally, the form and shape of the features have been considered, so that they can be applied easily to ancient sediments. At the same time, the genesis of such features has been noted, and genetic names and their characteristics have been given for detailed work. The subject is so vast that several primary sedimentary features that have no direct bearing on environmental interpretation have been omitted. The subject is vast, and numerous publications are available.

Book The Oceans Atlas

Book excerpt: An illustrated guide to the geography, geology, and life in the world's oceans. Take a dive into the world's oceans to discover their physical features and wildlife, and threats to their future. How do waves form? Where is the deepest part of the ocean? What is a black smoker? What would the ocean floor look like without water? What lives in a coral reef? All these questions and more are answered in The Oceans Atlas - an illustrated guide to Earth's oceans. Explore key features of the oceans from sea floor to surf, including tides and trenches, currents and coastline, volcanoes and vents. Discover the variety of marine life from the biggest sharks and whales to the tiniest invertebrates and polyps. Find out the human impact on our seas and how we can create a healthier and cleaner future. Luciano Corbella's hand-drawn illustrations allow you to see parts of the planet that can't be shown in photographs, with diagrams clearly annotated to help explain what's going on.

Book Deep Water Turbidite Systems

Download or read book Deep Water Turbidite Systems written by Dorrik A. V. Stow and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third volume in the IAS Reprint Series reviews some of themajor contributions that have been made over the last twenty yearsto our understanding of deep water environments. Few groups ofrocks have received as much attention in recent years as deep seasands and yet retained so many unsolved problems - How far and howfast can sediment debris flows travel? Do the many ancient seriesthat have been interpreted as submarine fan deposits bear anyresemblance to present day deep sea flows? How valid are thesequences described as coarsening upward or fining upward, and howshould they be interpreted? This timely review of contributionsmade to this area of study since 1970 reflects the heightenedinterest that has surrounded it. Deep Water Turbidite Systems contains 22 papers(reproduced in full) and 22 abstracts of papers that have appearedin the journal Sedimentology, concerned with the broadspectrum of topics within the field of turbidites and associateddeep water systems.
