This series will cover a number of subjects related to sediments and sedimentary rocks in a manner that both the researcher and the industrially oriented earth scientist can use constructively. Pub lications in this monograph series may fit one or more of the following main categories: Topical A topical subject will cover either the different aspects of a selected environment of deposition, or present a world tour of a particular depositional environment to dem onstrate its variability and its commonalities. Book excerpt: Submarine canyons are some of the most prominent features of the world’s continental margins creating heterogeneity in the terrain, influencing local and global hydrodynamics and often creating hotspots of biodiversity, both on the seafloor and in the water column. Canyon morphology and location on the margin make them the main conduits between the shelf and the deep sea, focussing the transport of sediments, organic matter, nutrients, and increasingly pollutants and litter. The focus of this Research Topic is highlighting human connections to the deep sea. Previous studies have underlined the need for a better understanding of anthropogenic impacts on submarine canyons, and how they fast-track our human footprint to the deep sea. Besides a better assessment of the extent and nature of human activities in submarine canyons, it primarily requires a holistic understanding of submarine canyons as systems, governed by the interplay of geological, sedimentological, oceanographic and biological processes. The goal of this Research Topic, based on the recent INCISE2021 International Symposium on Submarine Canyons, aims to fill that gap by gathering the latest observations of human activities in submarine canyons, the latest insights in submarine canyon functioning, and the latest interpretations on how the two are influencing each other.

It is intended for all those interested in recognizing depositional environments. The study of sediments includes investigations of various aspects of sediments. This needs a study by standard methods. Methods of study have not been included, as many textbooks exist on the subject. However, the importance of various results obtained from such investigations has been discussed, as far as these results can be helpful in environ mental reconstruction. Special attention is given to information that has accumulated during the last decades on the mode of genesis of various sedimentary features and their distribution in present-day environments. As far as possible, existing terminology has been used. How ever, in several cases new simple groupings and classifications have been proposed. In making classification, generally, the form and shape of the features have been considered, so that they can be applied easily to ancient sediments. At the same time, the genesis of such features has been noted, and genetic names and their characteristics have been given for detailed work. The subject is so vast that several primary sedimentary features that have no direct bearing on environmental interpretation have been omitted. The subject is vast, and numerous publications are available.
