Book Submachine Guns Caliber 45 M3 and M3a1 FM 23 41

Download or read book Submachine Guns Caliber 45 M3 and M3a1 FM 23 41 written by Department of the Army and published by Periscope Film LLC. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The M3 was an American .45-caliber submachine gun adopted for U.S. Army service in December of 1942, as the United States Submachine Gun, Cal. .45, M3. Compared to the Thompson submachine gun, the M3 was cheaper to produce, lighter, and more accurate. The M3 was commonly referred to as the "Grease Gun" or simply "the Greaser," due to its visual similarity to the mechanic's tool. Intended as a replacement for the .45-caliber Thompson submachine gun, the M3 began to replace the Thompson in first-line service in late 1944 and early 1945. The M3 was an automatic, air-cooled blowback operated weapon that fired from an open bolt. Built of plain .060-in. thick sheet steel, the M3 receiver was stamped in two halves that were then welded together. In December of 1944, a modernized variant of the M3 was introduced into service known as the M3A1, with all parts except the bolt, housing assembly, and receiver interchangeable with those of the M3. Due to delays caused by production issues and specification changes, the M3 and M3A1 saw little action in World War II. Created in 1957, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M3 and M3A1's design and capabilities. Intended as a commander's manual for training crew members, it details many aspects of assembly, maintenance, and operation. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Book excerpt: Influenced by the German MP 40 and the British Sten, the .45-caliber M3 “Grease Gun” served as the primary US submachine gun for almost a half-century. Designed to replace the expensive Thompson SMG, the M3 was issued to airborne troops and others during World War II thanks to its compact design with sliding wire stock. An improved variant, the M3A1, was favored by armored crews right up to the beginning of the 1990s, seeing service in 1991's Operation Desert Storm. In Korea and Vietnam, reconnaissance troops and special-operations forces were at times armed with the M3A1 – also available in a suppressed version – and it was the first SMG issued to the US counterterrorist unit Delta Force. Featuring full-color artwork, first-hand accounts, and archive and close-up photographs, this is the engaging story of the M3 submachine gun.

Book The US M3 M3A1 Submachine Gun

Download or read book The US M3 M3A1 Submachine Gun written by Michael Heidler and published by Schiffer Military History. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1943, when the "U.S. Submachine Gun, Caliber .45, M3" was officially adopted, it was a step into the future of weapons-manufacturing technology. In absolute contrast to the milled, high-quality Thompson models, the M3 was almost completely made from sheet metal. Many soldiers mockingly called it "Grease Gun" owing to its visual similarity to the mechanic's tool, but it soon gained a fighting reputation. The Grease Gun saw action not only in World War II, but also in Korea, Vietnam, and various other conflicts around the globe. China and Argentina made copies for their armies, and US surplus can still be found in foreign service today. This book tells the complete story of this remarkable weapon, from development and manufacturing, to combat. Included are descriptions of accessories, ammunition, and experimental models. The reader will find many hitherto unknown details, background information, and numerous photos.

Book excerpt: Watch a 700-year history unfold, from the medieval "hand-gonne" to today's technologically advanced assault weapons. Discover how gun design influenced warfare, from the 15th century when the arquebus defeated swordsmen, to the 20th century when the submachinegun gave the military vastly increased firepower. Guns: A Visual History shows in unique visual detail on how gun design evolved. It features more than 300 iconic examples, including the military AK-47 assault rifle and the pistol used by many police forces - the Glock 17. Each weapon is shown in close up with details of its design, barrel, calibre, and firepower. This comprehensive volume also features sporting guns, anti-tank weaponry and concealed assassin spy guns, such as the umbrella gun that killed Georgi Markov in 1978. It takes you inside iconic firearm firms such as Biretta, Colt and Lee Enfield, and tells stories of infamous sharpshooters from Dick Turpin to Al Capone. Whether you collect firearms or enjoy field sports and military history, Guns: A Visual History is an unmissable reference title.

Book Small Arms of the Vietnam War

Download or read book Small Arms of the Vietnam War written by Dale A. Dye and published by Warriors Publishing Group. This book was released on 2018-08-19 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With modern military emphasis on whiz-bang weapons technology and the constant quest for things that make a bigger bang on the battlefield, it’s easy to forget that at the dark heart of war stands an infantryman and his individual weapons. Those who understand warfare from research or from personal experience generally realize this about the conflicts that have plagued mankind since the dawn of time. Infantry weapons—often referred to as small arms—have fascinated soldiers and scholars for decades as they are the most personal aspects of combat. Small arms come into play when contact is close and potentially lethal. This was particularly true during the long, frustrating war in Vietnam, but much of the focus in studying that conflict has been either on aerial weapons—strike aircraft or armed helicopters—or on the originally much-maligned M16 rifle. There were huge numbers of other weapons used by both sides, but they are often ignored and rarely seen being used in combat action. This book solves that problem. Divided into easily digestible sections and preceded by cogent discussions of each weapon type, the authors have presented an intriguing collection of photographs that depict the primary small (and not so small) infantry arms most common on Vietnam battlefields. There are rare and stirring images here that depict what it was like to fight in the jungle-covered mountains and in the rice paddies. Viewing these images is like studying a primer about one of America’s longest and deadliest wars. "We have a new generation of combat veterans among us these days. Men and women who carried a new generation of weapons to war into places such as Iraq and Afghanistan, who have returned with a fresh understanding about the crucial importance of small arms in warfare. They understand...that there is no strategy or tactic that equals victory in armed conflict if it does not include that muddy, grimy, dog-tired infantryman with just his personal weapon to help him survive in a life-and-death encounter." – American Rifleman "It’s an excellent book for anyone with an interest in the details of 20th-century infantry weapons, especially historians and collectors." – Booksmith
