Book What is Wrong with Us

Download or read book What is Wrong with Us written by Eric Coombes and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can any of us entirely banish from our hearts and minds grave misgivings about the condition of the culture we now inhabit? Expressions of those misgivings are mostly unheard in public forums, ignored in the dominant media, and, if noticed at all, dismissed by state-supported bureaucracies and commercial vested interests. To have any chance of gaining attention, they must resolve themselves into coherent forms. We need to clarify our perceptions of the things that trouble us, by articulating and developing our thoughts about them. That is, we are in need of serious criticism—serious criticism, aesthetic, social and political—which is notably lacking in the contemporary world, especially in places readily available to the educated non-specialist, such as the 'quality' weekend newspapers, and especially, perhaps, in relation to the visual arts. The pieces collected in this volume are not presented as amounting to an overall account or theory of our cultural condition. They are offered merely as examples of serious criticism, of what we need if we are to begin to think more profitably about our condition, daring, in defiance of contemporary dogmatism, to make the necessary judgements of value without which our culture will continue to disintegrate.

Book The End of Meaning

Download or read book The End of Meaning written by Matthew Gumpert and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-25 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The specter of the apocalypse has always been a semiotic fantasy: only at the end of all things will their true meaning be revealed. Our long romance with catastrophe is inseparable from the Western hermeneutical tradition: our search for an elusive truth, one that can only be uncovered through the interminable work of interpretation. Catastrophe terrifies and tantalizes to the extent it promises an end to this task. 9/11 is this book’s beginning, but not its end. Here, it seemed, was the apocalypse America had long been waiting for; until it became just another event. And, indeed, the real lesson of 9/11 may be that catastrophe is the purest form of the event. From the poetry of classical Greece to the popular culture of contemporary America, The End of Meaning seeks to demonstrate that catastrophe, precisely as the notion of the sui generis, has always been generic. This is not a book on the great catastrophes of the West; it offers no canon of catastrophe, no history of the catastrophic. The End of Meaning asks, instead, what if meaning itself is a catastrophe?

Book excerpt: When several of his novels were met with mixed critical and popular reactions, American author James Fenimore Cooper took a break from the romantic epics that had long been his stock-in-trade and tried his hand at Swiftian satire. The fantastical creatures who populate thinly veiled versions of England and America in the novel have one thing in common with humans: an abiding preoccupation with money.

Book Garrulous Ego Trip Gang

Download or read book Garrulous Ego Trip Gang written by Metuge Ekane and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE LACK of transfiguration in low-impact African academia with regards to cultivated and insensate academics is largely accountable for Africa’s incapacity to reinvent, transform, and redeem the material condition of the African people. Although this project is essentially a tale of woe regarding the largely unresponsive African academia, it is also methodical in its orientation in a measure to divulge the sub rosa and hegemonic regimes which preclude objective rationality in African intellectualism. Transfiguration is a prerequisite to transformation. The conceptual idea is that responsiveness and transformation are essentially about the pursuit of relative gains. In Africa, transformation can only be achieved when African people start observing Africa through African lenses. This project is intended for researchers and students of Africa as they would be introduced to introspective intuition as a fundamental framework for societal remediation.
