Download or read book Oil in the Sea III written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-03-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1970s, experts have recognized that petroleum pollutants were being discharged in marine waters worldwide, from oil spills, vessel operations, and land-based sources. Public attention to oil spills has forced improvements. Still, a considerable amount of oil is discharged yearly into sensitive coastal environments. Oil in the Sea provides the best available estimate of oil pollutant discharge into marine waters, including an evaluation of the methods for assessing petroleum load and a discussion about the concerns these loads represent. Featuring close-up looks at the Exxon Valdez spill and other notable events, the book identifies important research questions and makes recommendations for better analysis ofâ€"and more effective measures againstâ€"pollutant discharge. The book discusses: Inputâ€"where the discharges come from, including the role of two-stroke engines used on recreational craft. Behavior or fateâ€"how oil is affected by processes such as evaporation as it moves through the marine environment. Effectsâ€"what we know about the effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on marine organisms and ecosystems. Providing a needed update on a problem of international importance, this book will be of interest to energy policy makers, industry officials and managers, engineers and researchers, and advocates for the marine environment.

Book Sublethal and Chronic Effects of Pollutants on Freshwater Fish

Download or read book Sublethal and Chronic Effects of Pollutants on Freshwater Fish written by Rudolf Müller and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen much greater emphasis placed on the monitoring and measurement of sublethal aspects of pollution on fish. Tests and subsequent measurements have been made over the whole range of biological organisation – from the subcellular to changes at community structure level. Studies at the lower levels attract considerable scientific interest but, in many cases, it is still difficult to interpret the results of tests in terms of predicted harmful effects on individual fish. Conversely, it has been difficult to attribute the effects measured at higher levels to specific pollutants. This major new volume of immense scientific importance to fisheries managers, fish biologists, ecotoxicologists and those working in the area of fisheries and pollution, contains thirty–two papers presented at the Symposium hosted by the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission. Contributions come from an international team of distinguished experts and, together, the papers represent a detailed overview of work which is currently being undertaken in this area. Unlike many Symposia which simply report proceedings, this volume integrates the results of various areas of research and offers solid recommendations for future research and control.

Book Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms

Download or read book Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms: Deliberations and Recommendations of the National Science Foundation, International Decade of Ocean Exploration, Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms Study, August 11-14, 1974 The iboe Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms Program is designed to learn whether the levels of pollutants shown to be present in the oceans in the Baseline and Transfer Programs are now having or may in the future have a deleterious effect on life in the sea. Such potential damage is the overriding reason for studies of ocean pollu tion. The goals of the research projects in the Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms Program were established as: to establish the level of pollutant just necessary to cause clear mortality for open ocean and coastal marine organisms; (2) to determine the sublethal effects of pollutants on organisms; to learn the mechanism of pollutant effect on specific critical functions; to identify by careful chem ical analyses the toxic or damaging chemical Species. Book Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms

Download or read book Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms: Deliberations and Recommendations of the National Science Foundation, International Decade of Ocean Exploration, Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms Study, August 11-14, 1974 "Preserve the ocean environment by accelerating scientific observations of the natural stale of the ocean and its interactions with the coastal margin - to provide a basis for (a.) assessing and predicting man-induced and natural modifications of the character of the oceans; (b.) identifying damaging or irreversible effects of waste disposal at sea; and (c.) comprehending the interaction of various levels of marine life to permit steps to prevent depletion or extinction of valuable species as a result of man's activities." The above is the first of the six prescribed goals of the National Science Foundation's Office for the International Decade of Ocean Exploration. lit pursuit of this goal, IDOE, in 1971, carried out a one-year Baseline Data Acquisition Program and in the following year initiated the Pollutant Transfer Program. The Baseline Program indicated the present levels of contamination by trace metals and petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbons in water, sediment and biota of the oceans. The Pollutant Transfer Program provides information on the pathways or mechanisms controlling the rate of pollutant transfer from the source to and within the ocean, the information so necessary for predicting the distribution of pollutants, for assessing whether the oceans are becoming measurably polluted, and ultimately for indicating rates at which pollutants may be released safely to the environment. The IDOE Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms Program is designed to learn whether the levels of pollutants shown to be present in the oceans in the Baseline and Transfer Programs are now having or may in the future have a deleterious effect on life in the sea. Such potential damage is the overriding reason for studies of ocean pollution. The goals of the research projects in the Effects of Pollutants on Marine Organisms Program were established as: (1.) to establish the level of pollutant just necessary to cause clear mortality for open ocean and coastal marine organisms: (2.) to determine the sublethal effects of pollutants on organisms; (3.) to learn the mechanism of pollutant effect on specific critical functions: (4.) to identify by careful chemical analyses the toxic or damaging chemical species. To attain these ends, a broad based program was designed around a matrix consisting of the pollutants of concern (trace metals, chlorinated hydrocarbons and petroleum and its products) and the various levels of marine organisms from bacteria to fish. • Author : Colin Walker
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2014-05-07

  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Ecotoxicology written by Colin Walker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-05-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Warfare in Nature Pesticides and other industrial chemicals are at the root of many pollution problems. In view of the toxic effects of industrial chemicals found in the water, soil, and air, Ecotoxicology: Effects of Pollutants on the Natural Environment considers the impact of chemicals on the environment from a wider perspective: the evolution of plant toxins—and defense mechanisms against them in animals as a consequence of plant–animal warfare. Comparisons are made between this and the development of resistance by insects towards man-made insecticides. Pesticides and Drugs The text focuses particularly on problems posed by pesticides and, to a lesser extent, by drugs. This material specifically addresses the problems that pesticides pose and explores the development of resistance to them. It focuses on the history of pesticides, pesticide selectivity between target species and beneficial organisms, and types of pesticides. It discusses mandatory ecotoxicity testing as part of the process of risk assessment of environmental chemicals. The text considers the effects of pollutants at the population level, with respect to changes in numbers and genetic composition. It factors in the sublethal effects of pollutants on population levels, and cites an increase in the concentration of persistent pollutants in natural food chains as a cause of the decline of certain vertebrate predators. Overall the text: • Considers plant toxins as models for pesticides • Emphasizes principles illustrated with practical examples • Includes a glossary of terms Divided into three sections, this text uses a variety of examples and case studies to examine the effects of pollutants—including naturally occurring ones—on natural processes. It guides the reader through the basic issues and principles; outlines the science of ecotoxicology, which is the study of the effects of chemicals upon ecosystems; and introduces various strategies for pollution control.
