Book Subgroups of Teichmuller Modular Groups

Download or read book Subgroups of Teichmuller Modular Groups written by N. V. Ivanov and published by Amer Mathematical Society. This book was released on 1992 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teichmuller modular groups, also known as mapping class groups of surfaces, serve as a meeting ground for several branches of mathematics, including low-dimensional topology, the theory of Teichmuller spaces, group theory, and, more recently, mathematical physics. This work focuses mainly on the group-theoretic properties of these groups and their subgroups. The technical tools come from Thurston's theory of surfaces - his classification of surface diffeomorphisms and the theory of measured foliations on surfaces.

Book Complex Manifolds and Hyperbolic Geometry

Download or read book Complex Manifolds and Hyperbolic Geometry written by Clifford J. Earle and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume derives from the second Iberoamerican Congress on Geometry, held in 2001 in Mexico at the Centro de Investigacion en Matematicas A.C., an internationally recognized program of research in pure mathematics. The conference topics were chosen with an eye toward the presentation of new methods, recent results, and the creation of more interconnections between the different research groups working in complex manifolds and hyperbolic geometry. This volume reflects both the unity and the diversity of these subjects. Researchers around the globe have been working on problems concerning Riemann surfaces, as well as a wide scope of other issues: the theory of Teichmuller spaces, theta functions, algebraic geometry and classical function theory. Included here are discussions revolving around questions of geometry that are related in one way or another to functions of a complex variable. There are contributors on Riemann surfaces, hyperbolic geometry, Teichmuller spaces, and quasiconformal maps. Complex geometry has many applications--triangulations of surfaces, combinatorics, ordinary differential equations, complex dynamics, and the geometry of special curves and jacobians, among others. In this book, research mathematicians in complex geometry, hyperbolic geometry and Teichmuller spaces will find a selection of strong papers by international experts.

Book Woods Hole Mathematics

Download or read book Woods Hole Mathematics written by Nils Tongring and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this volume is the contemporary mathematics of geometry and physics, but the work also discusses the problem of the secondary structure of proteins, and an overview of arc complexes with proposed applications to macromolecular folding is given. OC Woods Hole has played such a vital role in both my mathematical and personal life that it is a great pleasure to see the mathematical tradition of the 1964 meeting resurrected forty years later and, as this volume shows, resurrected with new vigor and hopefully on a regular basis. I therefore consider it a signal honor to have been asked to introduce this volume with a few reminiscences of that meeting forty years ago.OCO Introduction by R Bott (Wolf Prize Winner, 2000)."

Book Handbook of Teichm ller Theory

Download or read book Handbook of Teichm ller Theory written by Athanase Papadopoulos and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2007 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Teichmuller space of a surface was introduced by O. Teichmuller in the 1930s. It is a basic tool in the study of Riemann's moduli spaces and the mapping class groups. These objects are fundamental in several fields of mathematics, including algebraic geometry, number theory, topology, geometry, and dynamics. The original setting of Teichmuller theory is complex analysis. The work of Thurston in the 1970s brought techniques of hyperbolic geometry to the study of Teichmuller space and its asymptotic geometry. Teichmuller spaces are also studied from the point of view of the representation theory of the fundamental group of the surface in a Lie group $G$, most notably $G=\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and $G=\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. In the 1980s, there evolved an essentially combinatorial treatment of the Teichmuller and moduli spaces involving techniques and ideas from high-energy physics, namely from string theory. The current research interests include the quantization of Teichmuller space, the Weil-Petersson symplectic and Poisson geometry of this space as well as gauge-theoretic extensions of these structures. The quantization theories can lead to new invariants of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The purpose of this handbook is to give a panorama of some of the most important aspects of Teichmuller theory. The handbook should be useful to specialists in the field, to graduate students, and more generally to mathematicians who want to learn about the subject. All the chapters are self-contained and have a pedagogical character. They are written by leading experts in the subject.

Book Problems on Mapping Class Groups and Related Topics

Download or read book Problems on Mapping Class Groups and Related Topics written by Benson Farb and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006-09-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The appearance of mapping class groups in mathematics is ubiquitous. The book presents 23 papers containing problems about mapping class groups, the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, Teichmuller geometry, and related areas. Each paper focusses completely on open problems and directions. The problems range in scope from specific computations, to broad programs. The goal is to have a rich source of problems which have been formulated explicitly and accessibly. The book is divided into four parts. Part I contains problems on the combinatorial and (co)homological group-theoretic aspects of mapping class groups, and the way in which these relate to problems in geometry and topology. Part II concentrates on connections with classification problems in 3-manifold theory, the theory of symplectic 4-manifolds, and algebraic geometry. A wide variety of problems, from understanding billiard trajectories to the classification of Kleinian groups, can be reduced to differential and synthetic geometry problems about moduli space. Such problems and connections are discussed in Part III. Mapping class groups are related, both concretely and philosophically, to a number of other groups, such as braid groups, lattices in semisimple Lie groups, and automorphism groups of free groups. Part IV concentrates on problems surrounding these relationships. This book should be of interest to anyone studying geometry, topology, algebraic geometry or infinite groups. It is meant to provide inspiration for everyone from graduate students to senior researchers.

Book Veech Groups and Translation Coverings

Download or read book Veech Groups and Translation Coverings written by Finster, Myriam and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A translation surface is obtained by taking plane polygons and gluing their edges by translations. We ask which subgroups of the Veech group of a primitive translation surface can be realised via a translation covering. For many primitive surfaces we prove that partition stabilising congruence subgroups are the Veech group of a covering surface. We also address the coverings via their monodromy groups and present examples of cyclic coverings in short orbits, i.e. with large Veech groups.

Book The Mapping Class Group from the Viewpoint of Measure Equivalence Theory

Download or read book The Mapping Class Group from the Viewpoint of Measure Equivalence Theory written by Yoshikata Kida and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author obtains some classification result for the mapping class groups of compact orientable surfaces in terms of measure equivalence. In particular, the mapping class groups of different closed surfaces cannot be measure equivalent. Moreover, the author gives various examples of discrete groups which are not measure equivalent to the mapping class groups. In the course of the proof, the author investigates amenability in a measurable sense for the actions of the mapping class group on the boundary at infinity of the curve complex and on the Thurston boundary and, using this investigation, proves that the mapping class group of a compact orientable surface is exact.

Book In the Tradition of Ahlfors Bers V

Download or read book In the Tradition of Ahlfors Bers V written by Mario Bonk and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ahlfors-Bers Colloquia commemorate the mathematical legacy of Lars Ahlfors and Lipman Bers. The core of this legacy lies in the fields of geometric function theory, Teichmuller theory, hyperbolic geometry, and partial differential equations. However, the work of Ahlfors and Bers has impacted and created interactions with many other fields of mathematics, such as algebraic geometry, dynamical systems, topology, geometric group theory, mathematical physics, and number theory. Recent years have seen a flowering of this legacy with an increased interest in their work. This current volume contains articles on a wide variety of subjects that are central to this legacy. These include papers in Kleinian groups, classical Riemann surface theory, translation surfaces, algebraic geometry and dynamics. The majority of the papers present new research, but there are survey articles as well.
