Book excerpt: Award-winning monograph of the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize 2001. Subgroup growth studies the distribution of subgroups of finite index in a group as a function of the index. In the last two decades this topic has developed into one of the most active areas of research in infinite group theory; this book is a systematic and comprehensive account of the substantial theory which has emerged. As well as determining the range of possible 'growth types', for finitely generated groups in general and for groups in particular classes such as linear groups, a main focus of the book is on the tight connection between the subgroup growth of a group and its algebraic structure. A wide range of mathematical disciplines play a significant role in this work: as well as various aspects of infinite group theory, these include finite simple groups and permutation groups, profinite groups, arithmetic groups and Strong Approximation, algebraic and analytic number theory, probability, and p-adic model theory. Relevant aspects of such topics are explained in self-contained 'windows'.

Book New Horizons in pro p Groups

Download or read book New Horizons in pro p Groups written by Marcus du Sautoy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-05-25 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pro-p group is the inverse limit of some system of finite p-groups, that is, of groups of prime-power order where the prime - conventionally denoted p - is fixed. Thus from one point of view, to study a pro-p group is the same as studying an infinite family of finite groups; but a pro-p group is also a compact topological group, and the compactness works its usual magic to bring 'infinite' problems down to manageable proportions. The p-adic integers appeared about a century ago, but the systematic study of pro-p groups in general is a fairly recent development. Although much has been dis covered, many avenues remain to be explored; the purpose of this book is to present a coherent account of the considerable achievements of the last several years, and to point the way forward. Thus our aim is both to stimulate research and to provide the comprehensive background on which that research must be based. The chapters cover a wide range. In order to ensure the most authoritative account, we have arranged for each chapter to be written by a leading contributor (or contributors) to the topic in question. Pro-p groups appear in several different, though sometimes overlapping, contexts.

Book Topics in Geometric Group Theory

Download or read book Topics in Geometric Group Theory written by Pierre de la Harpe and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-09-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Pierre de la Harpe provides a concise and engaging introduction to geometric group theory, a new method for studying infinite groups via their intrinsic geometry that has played a major role in mathematics over the past two decades. A recognized expert in the field, de la Harpe adopts a hands-on approach, illustrating key concepts with numerous concrete examples. The first five chapters present basic combinatorial and geometric group theory in a unique and refreshing way, with an emphasis on finitely generated versus finitely presented groups. In the final three chapters, de la Harpe discusses new material on the growth of groups, including a detailed treatment of the "Grigorchuk group." Most sections are followed by exercises and a list of problems and complements, enhancing the book's value for students; problems range from slightly more difficult exercises to open research problems in the field. An extensive list of references directs readers to more advanced results as well as connections with other fields.

Book Applying the Classification of Finite Simple Groups A User s Guide

Download or read book Applying the Classification of Finite Simple Groups A User s Guide written by Stephen D. Smith and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classification of Finite Simple Groups (CFSG) is a major project involving work by hundreds of researchers. The work was largely completed by about 1983, although final publication of the “quasithin” part was delayed until 2004. Since the 1980s, CFSG has had a huge influence on work in finite group theory and in many adjacent fields of mathematics. This book attempts to survey and sample a number of such topics from the very large and increasingly active research area of applications of CFSG. The book is based on the author's lectures at the September 2015 Venice Summer School on Finite Groups. With about 50 exercises from original lectures, it can serve as a second-year graduate course for students who have had first-year graduate algebra. It may be of particular interest to students looking for a dissertation topic around group theory. It can also be useful as an introduction and basic reference; in addition, it indicates fuller citations to the appropriate literature for readers who wish to go on to more detailed sources.

Book Algebraic Groups and Arithmetic

Download or read book Algebraic Groups and Arithmetic written by S. G. Dani and published by Narosa Publishing House. This book was released on 2004 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major advances have been made in recent decades in algebraic groups and arithmetic. The School of Mathematics of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, under the leadership of Professor M. S. Raghunathan, has been a significant contributor to this progress. This collection of papers grew out of a conference held in honor of Professor Raghunathan's sixtieth birthday. The volume contains original papers contributed by leading experts. Topics covered include group-theoretic aspects, Diophantine approximation, modular forms, representation theory, interactions with topology and geometry, and dynamics on homogeneous spaces. Particularly noteworthy are two expository articles on Professor Raghunathan's work by the late Armand Borel and Gopal Prasad. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in algebra and algebraic geometry.

Book The Subgroup Structure of the Finite Classical Groups

Download or read book The Subgroup Structure of the Finite Classical Groups written by Peter B. Kleidman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990-04-26 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the classification of the finite simple groups complete, much work has gone into the study of maximal subgroups of almost simple groups. In this volume the authors investigate the maximal subgroups of the finite classical groups and present research into these groups as well as proving many new results. In particular, the authors develop a unified treatment of the theory of the 'geometric subgroups' of the classical groups, introduced by Aschbacher, and they answer the questions of maximality and conjugacy and obtain the precise shapes of these groups. Both authors are experts in the field and the book will be of considerable value not only to group theorists, but also to combinatorialists and geometers interested in these techniques and results. Graduate students will find it a very readable introduction to the topic and it will bring them to the very forefront of research in group theory.
