Download or read book Neuro ophthalmic Disorders written by Preeti Patil Chhablani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-03 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses in detail the major advances in the field of neuro-ophthalmology. Based on the latest research from across the globe, it highlights recent developments in all areas of neuro-ophthalmology, including optic neuritis and the associated demyelinating diseases – especially the changing paradigms in the diagnosis and management of multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica. It also covers the various types of hereditary optic neuropathies as well as nystagmus and its management. In order to provide comprehensive information in a single volume, it addresses topics of interest in pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, such as pediatric optic neuritis and cortical visual impairment, innovations in the management of ocular motility disorders and other disorders of the optic nerve and central nervous system, including ischemic neuropathies and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. This book provides a one-stop source of information on all key topics of neuro-ophthalmology, enabling trainee fellows and practitioners to keep abreast of the current thoughts in this field. As part of the series “Current Practices in Ophthalmology” this volume is intended for residents and fellows-in-training, as well as generalist and specialist ophthalmologists alike.
Download or read book Drug Discovery and Evaluation Methods in Clinical Pharmacology written by H.Gerhard Vogel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug Discovery and Evaluation has become a more and more difficult, expensive and time-consuming process. The effect of a new compound has to be detected by in vitro and in vivo methods of pharmacology. The activity spectrum and the potency compared to existing drugs have to be determined. As these processes can be divided up stepwise we have designed a book series "Drug Discovery and Evaluation" in the form of a recommendation document. The methods to detect drug targets are described in the first volume of this series "Pharmacological Assays" comprising classical methods as well as new technologies. Before going to man, the most suitable compound has to be selected by pharmacokinetic studies and experiments in toxicology. These preclinical methods are described in the second volume „Safety and Pharmacokinetic Assays". Only then are first studies in human beings allowed. Special rules are established for Phase I studies. Clinical pharmacokinetics are performed in parallel with human studies on tolerability and therapeutic effects. Special studies according to various populations and different therapeutic indications are necessary. These items are covered in the third volume: „Methods in Clinical Pharmacology".
Download or read book Drug Discovery and Evaluation written by Hans G. Vogel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This reference book contains a comprehensive selection of the most frequently used assays for reliably detecting pharmacological effects of potential drugs, including tests for cardiovascular, analgesic, psychotropic, metabolic, endocrine, respiratory, renal, and immunomodulatory activities. Each of the over 700 assays comprises a detailed protocol with the purpose and rationale of the method, a description of the experimental procedure, a critical assessment of the results and their pharmacological and clinical relevance, and pertinent references. Identification of specific tests is facilitated by the enclosed CD-ROM which allows for a quick and full text research. An appendix with guidelines and legal regulations for animal experiments in various countries will help to plan these experiments properly in accordance with the welfare of laboratory animals.

Download or read book Engineering of Stem Cells written by Ulrich Martin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am very pleased to present this volume on engineering stem cells in Advances in Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology. This volume stays abreast of recent developments in stem cell biology and the high expectations concerning the dev- opment of stem cell based regenerative therapies. Regenerative medicine is the focus of current biomedical research, with unique challenges related to scientific, technical and ethical issues of stem cell research, and the potential added value of connecting biomedicine with enabling techno- gies such as materials sciences, mechanical- and nano-engineering. Research activities in regenerative medicine include strategies in endogenous regeneration of injured or degenerated tissues by means of gene therapy or cell transplantation, as well as complex approaches to replace or reconstruct lost or malformed tissue structures, by applying tissue engineering approaches. In most cases, the speci- ized functional cell types of interest cannot be isolated from the diseased organ or expanded to a sufficient degree, and various stem and progenitor cell types rep- sent the only applicable cell source. In almost all cases, stem cells have to be engineered, sometimes for functional improvement, in many cases to produce large numbers of cells, and frequently to achieve efficient and specific differentiation in the cell type(s) of interest.
