Book Biodiversity of the Prince Rupert Forest Region

Download or read book Biodiversity of the Prince Rupert Forest Region written by Gillian Radcliffe and published by Ministry of Forests Research Program. This book was released on 1994 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prince Rupert Forest Region occupies somewhat more than one-quarter of the land area of British Columbia and encompasses a broad spectrum of physiographic and climatic units. This project identified the major known components of terrestrial biological diversity and the major information gaps, emphasizing the ecosystem and species diversity in forested areas. To produce an ecosystem synopsis, the wildlife habitat classification was correlated with the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification to facilitate future cross-referencing. Vascular plant diversity was not specifically examined other than for rare and endangered species. Vertebrates were documented within forested subzones and variants to identify species diversity, determine habitat affinities of species of interest, and develop possible management guilds and management indicator species for forestry management. The taxonomy, abundance, and distribution of both fungi and invertebrates in the region were also investigated. Marine and freshwater species were excluded.

Book Trail of Story Traveller s Path

Download or read book Trail of Story Traveller s Path written by Leslie Main Johnson and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sensitive examination of the meanings of landscape draws on the author's rich experience with diverse enviornments and peoples: the Gitksan and Witsuwit'en of norwestern British Columbia, the Kaska Dena of the southern Yukon, and the Gwich'in of the Mackenzie Delta. Johnson maintains that the ways people understand and act upon land have wide implications, shaping cultures and ways of life, determining identity and polity, and creating and mainting environmental relationships and economies. Her emphassis on landscape and ways of knowing the land provides a particular take on ecological relationships of First Peoples to land.

Book Ecology Wonder in the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site

Download or read book Ecology Wonder in the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site written by Robert W. Sandford and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology and Wonder celebrates Western Canada's breathtaking landscape. The book makes several remarkable claims. The greatest cultural achievement in the mountain region of western Canada may be what has been preserved, not what has been developed. Protecting the spine of the Rocky Mountains will preserve crucial ecological functions. Because the process of ecosystem diminshment and species loss has been slowed, an ecological thermostat has been kept alive. This may well be an important defence against future impacts of climate change in the Canadian West.

Book The Scientific Basis for Conserving Forest Carnivores

Download or read book The Scientific Basis for Conserving Forest Carnivores written by Leonard F. Ruggiero and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cooperative effort by USDA Forest Service Research and the National Forest System assesses the state of knowledge related to the conservation status of four forest carnivores in the western United States: American marten, fisher, lynx, and wolverine. The conservation assessment reviews the biology and ecology of these species. It also discusses management considerations stemming from what is known and identifies information needed. Overall, we found huge knowledge gaps that make it difficult to evaluate the species' conservation status.
