Book Instrumented Impact Testing of Subsize Charpy V Notch Specimens

Download or read book Instrumented Impact Testing of Subsize Charpy V Notch Specimens written by JF. Kalthoff and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instrumented impact test with Charpy specimens of subsize geometry is discussed in relation to equivalent standard procedures for performing the test with specimens of regular size. Subsize specimens because of their smaller dimensions imply smaller load values and higher frequencies of the force oscillations. These differences in the behaviour require special high sensitivity striker tups, force measuring chains of high upper frequency bounds, and knowledge of the actual Hooke's line for determining the yield force Fgy. Practical recommendations are given and procedures are outlined on how these requirements can be met and how the evaluations can be performed. The applicability of the presented measuring and evaluation procedures and the validity and the accuracy of the obtained data is demonstrated by experimental results.

Book From Charpy to Present Impact Testing

Download or read book From Charpy to Present Impact Testing written by D. Francois and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-06-18 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Charpy to Present Impact Testing contains 52 peer-reviewed papers selected from those presented at the Charpy Centenary Conference held in Poitiers, France, 2-5 October 2001. The name of Charpy remains associated with impact testing on notched specimens. At a time when many steam engines exploded, engineers were preoccupied with studying the resistance of steels to impact loading. The Charpy test has provided invaluable indications on the impact properties of materials. It revealed the brittle ductile transition of ferritic steels. The Charpy test is able to provide more quantitative results by instrumenting the striker, which allows the evolution of the applied load during the impact to be determined. The Charpy test is of great importance to evaluate the embrittlement of steels by irradiation in nuclear reactors. Progress in computer programming has allowed for a computer model of the test to be developed; a difficult task in view of its dynamic, three dimensional, adiabatic nature. Together with precise observations of the processes of fracture, this opens the possibility of transferring quantitatively the results of Charpy tests to real components. This test has also been extended to materials other than steels, and is also frequently used to test polymeric materials. Thus the Charpy test is a tool of great importance and is still at the root of a number of investigations; this is the reason why it was felt that the centenary of the Charpy test had to be celebrated. The Société Française de Métallurgie et de Matériaux decided to organise an international conference which was put under the auspices of the European Society for the Integrity of Structures (ESIS). This Charpy Centenary Conference (CCC 2001) was held in Poitiers, at Futuroscope in October 2001. More than 150 participants from 17 countries took part in the discussions and about one hundred presentations were given. An exhibition of equipment showed, not only present day testing machines, but also one of the first Charpy pendulums, brought all the way from Imperial College in London. From Charpy to Present Impact Testing puts together a number of significant contributions. They are classified into 6 headings: •Keynote lectures,•Micromechanisms,•Polymers,•Testing procedures,•Applications,•Modelling.

Book The Production of Calibration Specimens for Impact Testing of Subsize Charpy Specimens

Download or read book The Production of Calibration Specimens for Impact Testing of Subsize Charpy Specimens written by DJ. Alexander and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calibration specimens have been manufactured for checking the performance of a pendulum impact testing machine that has been configured for testing subsize specimens, both half-size (5.0 x 5.0 x 25.4 mm) and third-size (3.33 x 3.33 x 25.4 mm). Specimens were fabricated from quenched-and-tempered 4340 steel heat treated to produce different microstructures that would result in either high or low absorbed energy levels on testing. A large group of both half- and third-size specimens were tested at -40°C. The results of the tests were analyzed for average value and standard deviation, and these values were used to establish calibration limits for the Charpy impact machine when testing subsize specimens. These average values plus or minus two standard deviations were set as the acceptable limits for the average of five tests for calibration of the impact testing machine.

Download or read book European Activity on Instrumented Impact Testing of Subsize Charpy V Notch Specimens ESIS TC5 written by E. Lucon and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the frame of the activities of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS) and within the Technical sub-committee 5 on "Dynamic Testing at Intermediate Strain Rates," a working group was formed in 1991 to address the subject of subsize specimen impact testing. In parallel with drafting a test procedure, this group has organized and carried out an interlaboratory round-robin exercise aimed at validating the procedure and clarifying several aspects of the methodology. The round-robin involved thirteen labs, two of which were from the U.S., and was subdivided into two phases. This paper presents an overview of the activity of this ESIS working group, with specific emphasis on the round-robin results, which will be presented and discussed.

Book On Impact Testing of Subsize Charpy V Notch Type Specimens

Download or read book On Impact Testing of Subsize Charpy V Notch Type Specimens written by RK. Nanstad and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential for using subsize specimens to determine the actual properties of reactor pressure vessel steels is receiving increasing attention for improved vessel condition monitoring that could be beneficial for light-water reactor plant-life extension. This potential is made conditional upon, on the one hand, by the possibility of cutting samples of small volume from the internal surface of the pressure vessel for determination of actual properties of the operating pressure vessel. On the other hand, the plant-life extension will require supplemental surveillance data that cannot be provided by the existing surveillance programs. Testing of subsize specimens manufactured from broken halves of previously tested surveillance Charpy V-notch (CVN) specimens offers an attractive means of extending existing surveillance programs. Using subsize CVN type specimens requires the establishment of a specimen geometry that is adequate to obtain a ductile-to-brittle transition curve similar to that obtained from full-size specimens. This requires the development of a correlation of transition temperature and upper-shelf toughness between subsize and full-size specimens. The present study was conducted under the Heavy-Section Steel Irradiation Program. Different published approaches to the use of subsize specimens were analyzed and five different geometries of subsize specimens were selected for testing and evaluation. The specimens were made from several types of pressure vessel steels with a wide range of yield strengths, transition temperatures, and upper-shelf energies (USEs). The effects of specimen dimensions, including depth, angle, and radius of notch have been studied. The correlation of transition temperature determined from different types of subsize specimens and the full-size specimen is presented. A new procedure for transforming data from subsize specimens was developed and is presented. The transformed data are in good agreement with data from full-size specimens for materials that have USE levels

Book Small Specimen Test Techniques

Download or read book Small Specimen Test Techniques written by W. R. Corwin and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1998 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of an increasing interest in radiation embrittlement for aging nuclear reactors, scientists gathered in New Orleans in January 1997 to consider the interests and capabilities of the scientific-testing community and of the commercial light-water-cooled power-reactor industry in terms of improving methods to characterize component integrity. The resulting 37 papers concentrate on the use of unique small and miniature specimens; nondestructive, nonintrusive, and in- situ test techniques for measuring mechanical and fracture properties; the application of tests to irradiation-induced embrittlement; and actual examples of tests to determine material integrity and to evaluate potential component life extension. They consider experimental, analytical, and computational aspects. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Impact Characterization of Sub Size Charpy V Notch Specimens Prepared from Full Size Certified Reference Charpy V Notch Test Pieces

Download or read book Impact Characterization of Sub Size Charpy V Notch Specimens Prepared from Full Size Certified Reference Charpy V Notch Test Pieces written by E. Lucon and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To investigate the feasibility of the production of sub-size Charpy reference test pieces, tests were performed on sub-size samples (3 × 4 × 27 mm3) carefully machined from full-size (10 × 10 × 55 mm3) Charpy V-notch certified reference test pieces. The measured absorbed energy (KV) values indicate a highly satisfactory homogeneity of the sub-size specimens. Sub-size specimens were prepared from full-size reference test pieces of 30, 60, 80, 120, and 150 J nominal absorbed energy; and values between 2 J and 7.2 J were obtained, covering almost fully the range of interest for sub-size Charpy tests. A linear relationship is observed between the KV values of sub-size and full-size samples of the same material.
