Download or read book Growth and Poverty in Sub Saharan Africa written by Channing Arndt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the economic growth renaissance in sub-Saharan Africa is widely recognized, much less is known about progress in living conditions. This book comprehensively evaluates trends in living conditions in 16 major sub-Saharan African countries, corresponding to nearly 75% of the total population. A striking diversity of experience emerges. While monetary indicators improved in many countries, others are yet to succeed in channeling the benefits of economic growth into the pockets of the poor. Some countries experienced little economic growth, and saw little material progress for the poor. At the same time, the large majority of countries have made impressive progress in key non-monetary indicators of wellbeing. Overall, the African growth renaissance earns two cheers, but not three. While gains in macroeconomic and political stability are real, they are also fragile. Growth on a per capita basis is much better than in the 1980s and 1990s, yet not rapid compared with other developing regions. Importantly from a pan-African perspective, key economies-particularly Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa-are not among the better performers. Looking forward, realistic expectations are required. The development process is, almost always, a long hard slog. Nevertheless, real and durable factors appear to be at play on the sub-continent with positive implications for growth and poverty reduction in future.

Download or read book Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Sub Saharan Africa written by Nana K. Poku and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-03 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a clear and detailed examination of why it is so difficult to secure comprehensive political engagement and actionable, effective policy on sexual and reproductive health rights in sub-Saharan Africa. In an engaging analysis, Nana Poku employs expert knowledge to examine the prospects for large-scale improvements. He explores not only the full range of normative sensitivities, but also conceptual misunderstandings, legal difficulties and complex challenges of securing and maintaining adequate funding while AIDS remains a pandemic in the region. Up-to-date, succinct yet highly detailed, lucid and compelling in its diagnoses of highly complex issues, this book is a valuable, accessible study of a topic that is regional in focus but with clear global implications.

Download or read book Globalization written by John Glenn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than claim that there exists a common concept of globalization that all parties can agree to, this book seeks to examine some of the conceptions and the way in which they render different interpretations of particular aspects of globalization. The last two decades have witnessed an explosive proliferation of academic writings on the subject of globalization, which has been accompanied by a high level of interest in the media and widespread usage of the term. This has inevitably resulted in the meaning of the concept broadening to include a whole host of issues, running the attendant risk of losing any conceptual focus it had. John Glenn examines five issue areas affected by globalization: the economy sovereignty civil society governance communication. In so doing, the book aims to articulate certain questions within each area, which will allow for some judgment to be made concerning the differing perspectives on globalization. Globalization will be of interest to students of international political economy and politics and international relations in general.
Download or read book Gender Growth and Poverty Reduction written by C. Mark Blackden and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Comparison between Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and East Asia indicates that gender inequality in education and employment is estimated to have reduced SSA's per capita growth in the 1960-92 period by 0.8 percentage points per year. Therefore reducing gender-based asset inequality in SSA is an important development goal. This report documents the structural role of men and women in African economies and examines the linkages between the market and the household. It makes a convincing case that reducing gender inequality would increase growth, efficiency, and welfare. The authors make key recommendations for public policy intervention in the areas of participation, investment in the household economy, investment in human capital, support for rural livelihood strategies, and engendering statistics and poverty monitoring.
