Book Style in Furniture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Style in Furniture Classic Reprint written by R. Davis Benn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Style in Furniture IT is not the pretension of this work, as will be understood when its dimensions are remarked, to provide a complete and exhaustive history of furniture, but Simply to convey a knowledge of those national types that are still to be met with, in original form, in the auction sale-rooms, the dealers' shops, the country cottage, or the old family mansion; and which are being perpetuated even to-day by the labours of the designer who draws upon time-honoured sources for inspiration. The study of our domestic furnishing as it was prior to the end of the sixteenth century belongs rather to the field of remote antiquarian research, which interests but comparatively few people, and, on that account, has not been included in the present volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Furniture Styles This work does not pretend to be exhaustive, com prehensive, complete. Whole blocks of facts are deliberately omitted. My problem has been one of selection and elimination. I have endeavored to reduce a large, diffuse subject to lowest terms, to boil it down, to strip it to its essentials, and the reader need look for little more than a working out line. Book Historic Styles in Furniture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historic Styles in Furniture Classic Reprint written by Virginia Robie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Styles in Furniture The British Museum contains illuminated manuscripts dating back to the ninth century. From these priceless records and from wills of the period the home of the anglo-saxon thane has been deciphered. Fragments from many sources have been fitted together and a fairly clear picture has resulted. The ham, or home, contained one large apartment called the heal which served as a dining, living, and sleeping room. Adjoining it was the bower, or chamber, reserved for the ladies of the household. The ball was sparsely furnished. A board laid upon a trestle formed the dining-table. Benches and stools were the common seats and were used by all members of the family, except the lord and his lady who occupied two rudely constructed chairs. The walls were hung with walk rifts, or wall cloths, which served as a protection from wind and rain. The rafters were covered with a ceil cloth, from which our word ceiling is derived. In the center of the floor was the hearth, the smoke of the fire escaping through a louvre. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book How to Collect Old Furniture Classic Reprint

Download or read book How to Collect Old Furniture Classic Reprint written by Frederick Litchfield and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Collect, Old Furniture I have endeavoured to trace the changes in style and fashion from Antique to Mediaeval, from Mediaeval to Renaissance, and from Renais sance to Modern, but in the following notes I have attempted to give the reader some descriptions of the various kinds of furniture, made in different countries, from the sixteenth to the middle of the nineteenth century, omitting the earlier periods. As examples of the latter are seldom seen except in museums, they are, for all practical purposes, unobtainable by the collector of ordinary means. I have tried to convey by explanatory hints and suggestions, advice which may enable the reader to select the example of the period he is in search of, and avoid the imitation and the sham. Book How to Know Period Styles in Furniture

Download or read book How to Know Period Styles in Furniture written by W. L. Kimerly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Know Period Styles in Furniture: A Brief History of Furniture From the Days of Ancient Egypt to the Present Time, Illustrated With Over 300 Typical Examples and a Brief Description of Each Period A knowledge of period styles in furniture is as necessary to those who would properly furnish a home as a knowledge of grammar is to those who would speak correctly. All period styles have a history and an exceedingly interesting one. The historical styles in furniture are those that have stood the test of time; they were not created in a day, but were gradually developed to fit the needs of civilization and society; a change in government or religion has always been reflected in the character of the furniture. No new style has ever been created without a knowledge of some older one and probably never will be. The student of furniture may delve into the mysteries of design as deeply as he may desire and always find something interesting and instructive, but the busy man or woman, the clerk in the furniture store or the salesman on the road must have the information necessary for them to understand the general arrangement and char acteristics of period styles placed before them in as brief and compact a manner as possible. It is believed that the follow ing pages will accomplish this purpose in a better manner than any other book now published. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jacobean Furniture: And English Styles in Oak and Walnut One might almost say that since Henry the Eighth's introduction of the styles of the Italian Renaissance into England, that country has produced no original style of furniture. But lest this state ment be resented by affronted savants and hurt senti mentalists, side by side with that fact must be placed another, that England has played upon the styles she imported with such skill and grace that she has thus produced variants of great and peculiar beauty. Book The Period Furniture Handbook Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Period Furniture Handbook Classic Reprint written by G. Glen Gould and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Period Furniture Handbook What we need, in order to form an accurate con ception of the style of furniture of any particular period, is facts, and not an expression of a writer's personal feeling, either in preference for any par ticular style or detestation of it. Unhappily the ability to enjoy what is delightful in every period is not common. The critic who knows everything there is to be known about every one of the period styles is not always as wise a guide as one who has that God-given ability to select unerringly what is best in each. There is not a single one of the period styles which has not some excellent examples of furniture design and craftsman ship to its credit. To discredit the Baroque or the Rococo, the Empire or the Victorian in order to exalt the Gothic or the Renaissance is silly. Each incorporates its own ideas of suitability, dignity, decoration, and comfort. The pomp and state of the rectangular types in Europe and America prior to the 18th Century, all count for nothing when you drop at nightfall into your easy-chair, if it is easy. And can you be grateful enough for that welcome over-stuffing of seat, and back, and arms which enfolds you with a restfulness achieved only in the Victorian era! Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Furniture To these general considerations, applicable to the study of domestic art in every country, we must add one which has special reference to the genius of France, and will be to some extent the guiding principle of this book. The sons of the soil in that country were never, strictly speaking, inventors, they never evolved the primary germ of a new style; but they had a marvellous gift for assimilating the foreign ideas with which they were brought In contact, and, as it were, recasting in the powerful crucible of their brain enfeebled.
