Book Music Sexuality and the Enlightenment in Mozart s Figaro Don Giovanni and Cos fan tutte

Download or read book Music Sexuality and the Enlightenment in Mozart s Figaro Don Giovanni and Cos fan tutte written by Charles Ford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music, Sexuality and the Enlightenment explains how Mozart's music for Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte 'sounds' the intentions of Da Ponte's characters and their relationships with one another. Mozart, by way of the infinitely generative and beautiful logic of the sonata principle, did not merely interpret Da Ponte's characterizations but lent them temporal, musical forms. Charles Ford's analytic interpretation of these musical forms concerns processes and structures in detail and at medium- to long-term levels. He addresses the music of a wide range of arias and ensembles, and develops original ways to interpret the two largely overlooked operatic genres of secco recitative and finales. Moreover, Ford presents a new method by which to relate musical details directly to philosophical concepts, and thereby, the music of the operas to the inwardly contradictory thinking of the European Enlightenment. This involves close readings of late eighteenth-century understandings of 'man' and nature, self and other, morality and transgression, and gendered identities and sexuality, with particular reference to contemporary writers, especially Goethe, Kant, Laclos, Rousseau, Sade, Schiller, Sterne and Wollstonecraft. The concluding discussion of the implied futures of the operas argues that their divided sexualities, which are those of the Enlightenment as a whole, have come to form our own unquestioned assumptions about gender differences and sexuality. This, along with the elegant and eloquent precision of Mozart's music, is why Figaro, Giovanni and Così still maintain their vital immediacy for audiences today.

Book Critique as Critical History

Download or read book Critique as Critical History written by Bregham Dalgliesh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first sustained articulation of a Foucauldian œuvre. It situates Foucault’s critique within the tradition of Kant’s call for a philosophical archaeology of reason; in parallel, it demonstrates the priority in Foucault’s thought of Nietzsche over Heidegger and the framing of reason against an ontology of power. Bregham Dalgliesh hereby claims that at the heart of the Foucauldian œuvre is the philosophical method of critical history. Its task is to make the will to know that drives thought conscious of itself as a problem, especially the regimes of truth that define our governmentalities. By revealing the contingency of their constituent parts of knowledge, power and ethics, Dalgliesh demonstrates that critical history offers an alternative mode of critique to the hithertofore singular reading of the intellectual heritage of enlightenment, while it fosters an agonistic concept of freedom in respect of our putatively necessary limits.

Ihre Markteinführung Anfang der sechziger Jahre geriet zu einer fundamentalen Herausforderung: nicht nur für die Frauen und Männer auf allen Kontinenten, für ihr Sexualleben und für ihre Familienplanung. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes the plays The Robbers and Passion and Politics Two plays concerned with tyranny and freedom. Schiller's first play, The Robbers (1781), was written in great secrecy under the prison like conditions of Württenberg's Karlsschule: Karl, the son of a count, is disinherited through the machinations of his brother Franz, and, turning his back on a social order he finds unjust and corrupt, becomes the leader of a band of robbers. In Passion and Politics (1784), a 'bourgeoise tragedy', the love between Louise, a musician's daughter, and Ferdinand, a politician's son, crosses an unbridgeable social divide. One of the great figures in German literature, Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) was one of the most significant playwright of his day, numbering among his devotees Coleridge and Carlyle. His plays are known for their originality of form, vivid stage imagery and powerful language, faithfully rendered in Robert David MacDonald's acclaimed translations.

Book excerpt: Essays on 18th-century Sturm und Drang playwright J.M.R. Lenz, whose work shows many parallels with 20th-century theater. The essays collected in this volume constitute the first collection in English on the German writer Lenz (1751-1792). They grew out of the International J.M.R. Lenz Symposium organized by Professor Madland and held in October 1991at the University of Oklahoma. Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz, a writer whose work has received increasing attention lately for its prefiguration of the theater of our own century, emerges in these articles written by prominent Germanists and literary critics as a man ahead of his times, bedeviled by the neuroses of modernity. At the beginning of his career in the early 1770s, Lenz was so highly regarded that he was compared to Goethe. But Lenz had trouble establishing himself both socially and as a writer, and only Der Hofmeister was staged during his lifetime. By the time of his death at the age of 42, he had been almost forgotten by his contemporaries. General essays focus on Lenz's interest in linguistic matters, showing that he saw the unlocking of the potential of language as an act of liberation; on literary genre and sexual gender in Lenz's work; and, linking Lenz's characters to those of the twentieth century, on the rise of the lowly hero from Lenz to Georg Büchner to Bertolt Brecht.
