Book excerpt: The study of how the environment, local geography, and physical locations influence crime has a long history that stretches across a number of research traditions. These include the neighborhood-effects approach developed by the Chicago school of sociology in the 1920s; modern environmental criminology that explains the geographic distribution of crime; the criminology of place, which focuses on crime rates at specific places over time; and a newer approach that attends to the perception of crime and disorder in communities. Aided by new mobile and digital technologies as well as improved data reporting in recent decades, research in environmental criminology has developed at a rapid pace within each of these approaches. Despite these advances, research in the subfield of environmental criminology remains fragmented, and competing theories are often kept apart. This book takes a different approach and integrates the subfield as a whole. It covers the core theoretical and empirical issues of how and why the environment influences the emergence of crime and how crime can affect the environment. The chapters reflect the diversity in research and theory from all over the Western world. In addition to covering traditional criminological research, the book probes how well current theories of environmental criminology contribute to our understanding of new problems and how well theories travel to other areas, such as West Africa, in which cultural differences might lead to different patterns in offending.

Structural theories, including social disorganization theory focus on the impact of place versus the individual for explaining crime. This dissertation focuses on the impact of disadvantage and neighborhood instability, two of the three key predictors of social disorganization theory, on homicide across time and type. Due to a lack of existing databases that include information regarding both the location and type of the homicide, primary data is used to answer the research questions set forth in this dissertation. The sample includes twenty years of homicide data from Cleveland, Ohio from 1990 to 2010. Additionally, census data from multiple years are utilized to measure the independent variables in the study. This dissertation contributes to the existing literature by testing the impact of social disorganization over time and across different types of homicides using both traditional and improved analytical techniques, which include mapping, growth curve modeling and negative binomial models. Special attention is paid to the effects of spatial autocorrelation. The analyses reveal that disadvantage and neighborhood instability are important factors for explaining homicide rates over time. The results also reveal a differential impact of structural disadvantage across homicide types, illustrating the importance of disaggregating homicides. Additionally, the pattern in neighboring areas is significant, providing further evidence for the importance of studying neighboring effects. The findings suggest the importance of studying time, place and context for gaining a better understanding of homicide patterns.

Among the drawbacks of current crime analysis systems is their lack of tools for spatial analysis. For this reason, spatial analysts should research which current analysis techniques (or variations of such techniques) that have been already successfully applied to other areas (e.g., epidemiology, location-allocation analysis, etc.) can also be employed to the spatial analysis of crime data. This book presents a few of those cases.
