Book HIV AIDS and Agriculture in sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book HIV AIDS and Agriculture in sub Saharan Africa written by Tanja R. Müller and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication is the first in a series on HIV/AIDS and agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa with the overall objective of providing a resource base on issues of rural development in a broad sense in the times of HIV/AIDS. This first book discusses the impact of the epidemic as it has emerged over the last decades at different levels of the agricultural sector, namely the farming system level, the livelihood level, and the household level. In a further step, impact on the agricultural estate sector as well as pastoralism is discussed. One overarching issue that emerges is the importance of gender attributes to adequately understand and address HIV/AIDS impact - the topic at the centre of the second part of the series. The text ends with a discussion of HIV/AIDS in relation to other shocks that befall rural livelihoods. It is followed by an annotated bibliography.

Book HIV AIDS and human development in sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book HIV AIDS and human development in sub Saharan Africa written by Tanja R. Müller and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third part of the AWLAE series on HIV/AIDS and agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa focuses on the epidemic as a challenge to human development in general and rural development in particular. In the face of the impact of the epidemic as described in parts one and two of the series, the agricultural sector can play an important role in mitigating some of its effects. Strategies for agricultural intervention are of particular importance in sub-Saharan Africa, given the fact that most of the countries hardest hit by the epidemic are heavily reliant on agriculture. Different agricultural sector based mitigation strategies are discussed. It is further argued, however, that such interventions need to be complemented by interventions from the health and other sectors, in particular by treatment regimes including access to anti-retroviral drugs. The text is followed by an annotated bibliography.

Book Exploring Linkages Between Agriculture and HIV AIDS

Download or read book Exploring Linkages Between Agriculture and HIV AIDS written by E. Wairimu Mwangi and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recognition that the HIV/AIDS epidemic is a major threat to sub Saharan Africa's economic development has prompted researchers to focus on the economic impacts of the disease. In particular, given the importance of agriculture for livelihoods in sub Saharan Africa (SSA), researchers have investigated the impact of HIV/AIDS on agriculture. Relatively little research has focused on the role agriculture plays in fueling the spread of HIV/AIDS. This study addresses this gap in the literature and examines how agricultural contexts in Kenya influence women's vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. The study defines vulnerability in terms of upstream factors, that is whether and through what pathways poverty puts people at greater risk of being exposed to the virus.

Book Improving Access to HIV AIDS Medicines in Africa

Download or read book Improving Access to HIV AIDS Medicines in Africa written by Patrick Lumumba Osewe and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing access to affordable, good quality HIV/AIDS medicines remains a challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa. Although patent protection is by no means the only barrier to access, it has significant implications for accessibility. Experiences from a number of countries show that local production of HIV/AIDS medicines depends not on research and technology, but also on highly regulated patents and intensive capital investment. These factors pose major challenges to African countries that have ventured into this undertaking. The Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) requires all World Trade Organization members to adopt certain minimum standards for the protection of intellectual property rights, including the rights of pharmaceutical product patent holders. Improving Access to HIV/AIDS Medicines in Africa analyses the extent to which countries in Sub-Saharan Africa have been able to use flexibilities in the agreement to improve access to affordable antiretroviral (ARV) medicines. It also examines the option of local manufacture of ARV medicines - based on the experiences of Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Zimbabwe - and it evaluates factors that favor or hinder sustainable local production. Finally the book makes recommendations on how countries in the region can use the TRIPS flexibilities to improve access to life-saving medicines.

Book excerpt: This publication demonstrates that organic management can benefit people, the economy and ecosystems and that this can be achieved in Africa, where hunger and degradation stubbornly persist, despite decades of development efforts. The work presented in this volume stems from the conference on Mainstreaming Organic Agriculture in the African Development Agenda, held in Lusaka, Zambia, from 2 to 4 May 2012. This publication expands on selected research presented during the Lusaka Conference. The different chapters document sustainability experiences, including: mainstreaming organic agriculture into African development approaches; community-based livestock systems combining holistic range management; indigenous ethno-veterinary practices and new understanding of customary systems of resource management; eco-functional intensification through management of legumes, systems of rice intensification and integrated farming; and smallholders knowledge harnessed through family farmers learning

Book The Impact of HIV AIDS on Food Security in Rural Africa

Download or read book The Impact of HIV AIDS on Food Security in Rural Africa written by Simon Nangabo and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to establish an understanding of how HIV/AIDS affects food security in rural communities of Sub-Saharan Africa. Zambia is used as a case study because it is one of the countries most affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in sub Saharan Africa and the world. Besides exploring the impact of HIV/AIDS on food security, the book seeks to examine the relationship between coping with HIV/AIDS and food insecurity and how responding to each of them affects the other. The book further seeks to examine whether there are particular obstacles for women in rural Zambia to attaining Antiretroviral drugs, and whether the ARV health strategy is an effective way of supporting women who are coping with both the HIV/AIDS epidemic and food insecurity. Findings of this study may be used by policy makers in Africa and other countries, researchers and Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) as a basis for policy review and change, and further research.
