Book John of Moravia between the Czech Lands and the Patriarchate of Aquileia ca 1345 1394

Download or read book John of Moravia between the Czech Lands and the Patriarchate of Aquileia ca 1345 1394 written by Ondřej Schmidt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Ondřej Schmidt offers a critical biography of John of Moravia, illegitimate son of the Moravian Margrave John Henry from the Luxembourg dynasty. Earlier research has confused John with another son of the Margrave, but here, the author argues that John actually became provost of Vyšehrad (1368–1380), bishop of Litomyšl (1380–1387), and eventually patriarch of Aquileia (1387–1394). The study provides a detailed account of John’s life and his assassination in the wider context of princely bastards’ careers, the Luxembourg dynasty, and Czech and Italian history. Schmidt also explores the development of the “second life” of John of Moravia in the historical memory of the following centuries. First published in Czech by Vyšehrad Publishers Ltd as Jan z Moravy. Zapomenutý Lucemburk na aquilejském stolci, Prague, 2016

Book The Unmarried Mother and Her Child

Download or read book The Unmarried Mother and Her Child written by Virginia Wimperis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-15 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1960, when every twentieth child in this country was born illegitimate, every eighth was conceived outside marriage; every fourth mother conceived her first-born before her wedding day; and among the children below school-leaving age over half a million were illegitimate – figures that were paralleled in many countries of Europe and the Commonwealth at the time. Who are the parents of these children? Why do they not marry? How many of the fathers are known and how many of them know or help to maintain their children? What legal pressure can be brought upon the parents and how easily can payment be evaded? What assistance does the State or do the voluntary agencies give to these young families, here or in other countries? As the children grow up, what happens to them? How many are adopted, how many pass into public care – and why? How many appear before the courts? What special personal difficulties do they have? These and a host of other questions are fully explored for the first time in this book, which at the time would be greeted with equal interest by social workers here and abroad and be the general reader. The English problems are viewed in relation to the various solutions adopted by other countries, and some of these – the Russian, German, Norwegian, Swedish and Danish – are discussed at length. The book contains two full-length stories told by unmarried mothers – one a nurse and the other a teacher – in their own words. From a very different world today this reissue can be read and understood in its historical context. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1960. The language used and views portrayed are a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1945. This book presents the developing opinions contemporary to the post-war period, of the social and psychological roots of criminal actions as seen through the viewpoint of a practising magistrate. Looking at the psychological treatment of delinquents in particular, using actual case experiences, various causes are illustrated, and future preventative interventions are suggested and categorised. Early childhood developmental effects leading to characteristic criminality are distinguished from those societal factors with later and lesser influence, in the opinion of the author. The book discusses the court systems for judging family disputes and divorce in comparison to criminal cases amongst its investigation into the cause of criminality. The author’s ground-breaking work led to much reform in the UK judicial system and this book is a fascinating insight to the history of psychology, law and criminology.
