Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Stress and Mental Health of Secondary School Students in Shanghai: The Effects of Collectivism and Guanxi Submitted by Lou Weiqun for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in Feburary 1999 This study investigates the effects of collectivism and guanxi on perceived stress upon and the mental health of senior secondary school students aged 15 to 19 years in metropolitan Shanghai. A survey involving cluster random sampling and self-administered questionnaires was employed. A total sample of 2,986 respondents was recruited from ten secondary schools located in six geographical districts of the municipality. The study involved the development of a cultural model of the mental health of adolescents in urban China. A 26-item 'Adolescent Stressor List' was constructed to assess the nature of the stress perceived by adolescents. The relationship between perceived stress, collective behavioral tendency, perceived guanxi, and mental health, as measured on the Adolescent Stressors List, Guanxi Inventory, Subjective Individualism and Collectivism Scale, and the Chinese Version of the 30-item General Health Questionnaire and Purpose in Life were executed. The effects of sex, age, grade, religious belief, as well as family background, such as occupation of parents, educational level of parents, and economic status upon mental health were also explored. The findings showed that the stressors and mental health problems experienced by adolescents in urban China were mainly socially oriented. Adolescents experienced a higher level of stress relevant to academic issue from others' expectation or comparison by others. Consistent with previous findings, perceived stress was found to be positively related to psychological distress and negatively related to positive well-being. Collective behavioral tendency was found to be negatively related to psychological distress but inversely related to positive well-being. It was also found that vertical collectivism could buffer the negative effect of other-domain stress on adolescent mental health. Adolescents could benefit from a guanxi network that was immediate centered, intermediate supported, with an extension to distant guanxi. The effect of guanxi on adolescent mental health was hierarchically structured. The buffering effect of guanxi on adolescent mental health was limited to psychological distress and was hierarchically structured. In sum, social context was found to play a significant role in shaping adolescent development in urban China. Resources identified such as collectivism and guanxi have a significant influence on the mental health of adolescents. The implications of mental health service provision were discussed and future research approaches were suggested. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, University of Ghana, Legon, language: English, abstract: In Ghana, information about social media influences on adolescent users' behaviour is dearth. Any empirical assessment of social media influences on adolescent mental health is largely lacking. Furthermore, there is limited or no policy or legal framework regarding access and use of social media platforms in Ghana. More so, most of the few empirical studies on social media usage in Ghana have focused on access, purpose, benefits and risks and impacts on academic performance of tertiary, secondary and basic school students. It is against this backdrop that the current study comes to examine the actual influences of social media on adolescent mental health and overall policy implications in Ghana. The researcher examines the trend in social media use, the main impacts of social media use on adolescents and major influences of social media use on mental health of adolescents in Ghana. The study will contribute immensely to existing knowledge on social media use among Ghanaian youth. The results may also inform national policy on effective and responsible use of social media in order to mitigate associated risks of social media use on Ghanaian adolescents. Social media has become a common avenue for social networking in a virtual public, which allows people to create and consume their own information on any e-medium that sanctions social interfacing. It includes online platforms such as social networking, internet fora, blogs and microblogs, photo or video sharing media, crowdsourcing and virtual games. These media present both opportunities and challenges to users. The use of social media by especially adolescents may enhance communication and socialization, learning opportunities, and access to important health information. Download or read book School Based Mental Health Therapy Meeting the Needs of Rural Adolescents written by Albee Therese Mendoza and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School-based mental health (SBMH) therapy offers promise in addressing the mental health needs of rural adolescents. The current investigation includes two studies that examine rural adolescents' educational and mental health outcomes after receiving mental health services. Results from the first study which focused on educational outcomes, demonstrated no statistically significant relationship between the number of SBMH therapy sessions and the number of absences, or between the number of SBMH therapy sessions and the number of discipline referrals. Results from the second study which focused on mental health outcomes, demonstrated no statistically significant differences between pre and post treatment scores on the Youth Version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ-Y). However, a strong, negative correlation between the number of SBMH therapy sessions and scores on the SDQ-Y Impact scale was found. Additionally, participants who only completed their pretest had lower scores on the SDQ-Y Peer Problem scale than participants who completed both pre and posttests. This investigation can inform ongoing efforts of SBMH therapy and provide recommendations for future research in the accountability, availability, accessibility, and acceptability of these services for rural adolescents.
