Book A Matter of People

Download or read book A Matter of People written by Shanti George and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India's 'Anand pattern' dairy co-operatives are widely held to be a developmental model for Asia, Africa and Latin America, but have been criticized for their limited benefits to the poorest, their effect on rural women's work, and their use of capital-intensive imported technology. This book assesses the Kheda dairy co-operative in Gujarat that supposedly inspired the Anand pattern, and uses case studies from another Indian state, Kerala, to question the drive to 'replicate Anand'. It discusses the long-established and successful Choryasi dairy co-operative (also in Gujarat), that uses intermediate technology but has not been adopted as a model. The book then moves to an African country, Zimbabwe, where the Dairy Development Programme has tried to learn both from the 'Anand pattern' and from critics, in its efforts to set up locally appropriate dairy cooperatives. Most studies of dairy co-operatives in India focus on the word 'dairy' - on milk, cows, and technical and organizational aspects, possibly because animal scientists and dairy technologists dominate the field. But what of 'co-operation', the complex economic, social and political process that can bring together different communities, castes, classes, households, genders and generations? This book tries to argue for a sustainable development which takes the human factor into account. A Matter of People is scholarly as conception and presentation but reads like an exciting novel.

Book Study of Socio economic and Psychological Correlates in Organization and Functioning of Dairy Co operatives

Download or read book Study of Socio economic and Psychological Correlates in Organization and Functioning of Dairy Co operatives written by S. K. Bhanja and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present investigation has been undertaken to explore the intricate factors responsible for successful organization and functioning of milk Co-operatives. The study was confined to milkshed area of Dudh sagar dairy, Mehsana, Gujarat. Multistage randan sampling technique was used for the study. The primary data was collected from employees of the co-operative society and secondary data was collected from society records with the help of structured schedules and personal interviews. The results indicated that the societies were highly successful in areas where people's participation in decision making was more. These co-operatives were found to be less successful in the areas where the villagers had no experience of fluid milk marketing and lacking leadership. The high successful societies were observed to have highe initial marketable surplus and the period to organise a new society was founds to be 8 months. The study revealed that the people from high caste group in the village were largely represented in milk society compared to backward and scheduled caste i.e. hampering the success of the society. It was realised that the attempts towards a success society should not be isolated but it should be a who listic blending of primary members, managing committee members, village environment and organizational variables. In general it was observed that the employees in the milk producers co-operative societies were poorly paid and had lower job satisfaction. However, the man power in MPCS emerged out to have highly significant but negative regressio coefficient in relation to the success of milk society. It was also observed that the leaders in high success society were having less generalised confermity tendency but more mutual trust among the Management Committee members. The MCMS with larger land holding and higher family education were observed to be less effective as they consider their membership as a prestige symbol without much interest. However, it was noticed that the extension activities performed by the MPCS were very important contributing factors in the success of a society. The potentiality of MPCS depended on infrastructure and transport. It was interesting to note that the MCMS inter ference in day-today management hampered the success of milk society but at the same time the milk unions efforts to reach all the participating primary milk societies equally to win confidence, paved the way for success.
