Book The World Bank and Irrigation

Download or read book The World Bank and Irrigation written by William I. Jones and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This book provides an independent and comprehensive review of World Bank irrigation lending and policy between 1948 and 1993. The Bank's role in irrigation lending has been large--more than $30 billion (in current U.S. dollars) spread over some 600 projects. Only 200 projects have been in place long enough to be assessed. The overall performance record is good, but there is room for improvement. The report finds that there are still pervasive problems in maintenance and operation. Operating chaos prevails in most large canal systems in the humid tropics. In drier areas, drainage is the biggest environmental problem associated with irrigation. The author argues for upgrading existing systems, improving service, involving irrigators, and saving water where it is scarce.

Book Bridging Troubled Waters

Download or read book Bridging Troubled Waters written by George Keith Pitman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, 166 million people in 18 countries lack access to adequate water resources, and it is estimated that by 2025, the number of people affected will increase to approximately three billion or 40 per cent of the worlds population. There is now an international consensus that the severity of the problem requires a strategic approach that emphasises the equitable and sustainable management of water resources. This report examines the implementation of the World Banks 1993 Water Resources Management policy and evaluates the effectiveness of strategies adopted which seek to address identified problems. It also makes recommendations for improving World Bank policy and strategy in the water sector.

Book The Role of Smallholder Farms in Food and Nutrition Security

Download or read book The Role of Smallholder Farms in Food and Nutrition Security written by Sergio Gomez y Paloma and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book discusses the current role of smallholders in connection with food security and poverty reduction in developing countries. It addresses the opportunities they enjoy, and the constraints they face, by analysing the availability, access to and utilization of production factors. Due to the relevance of smallholder farms, enhancing their production capacities and economic and social resilience could produce positive impacts on food security and nutrition at a number of levels. In addition to the role of small farmers as food suppliers, the book considers their role as consumers and their level of nutrition security. It investigates the link between agriculture and nutrition in order to better understand how agriculture affects human health and dietary patterns. Given the importance of smallholdings, strategies to increase their productivity are essential to improving food and nutrition security, as well as food diversity.

Book Irrigation Water Pricing

Download or read book Irrigation Water Pricing written by François Molle and published by CABI. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much hope has been vested in pricing as a means of helping to regulate and rationalize water management, notably in the irrigation sector. The pricing of water has often been applied universally, using general and ideological policies, and not considering regional environmental and economic differences. Almost 15 years after the emphasis laid at the Dublin and Rio conferences on treating water as an economic good, a comprehensive review of how such policies have helped manage water resources an irrigation use is necessary. The case-studies presented here offer a reassessment of current policies by evaluating their objectives and constraints and often demonstrating their failure by not considering the regional context. They will therefore contribute to avoiding costly and misplaced reforms and help design water policies that are based on a deeper understanding of the factors which eventually dictate their effectiveness.

Book Priority areas for irrigation investments in Belize

Download or read book Priority areas for irrigation investments in Belize written by Sabrie, R. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2024-03-13 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this report is on climate-resilient irrigation and drainage (I&D) investments, with the aim to improve agricultural production and productivity in Belize. To achieve this task, FAO has developed an innovative methodology based on the preparation of a multi-criteria framework. The objective of this methodology is to identify I&D investments to help policymakers and investors target investment resources. Aligned with Belize's climate resilience commitments, our findings present essential insights that pave the way for stakeholders to develop effective investment strategies to support the agriculture sector. In collaboration with Belize, FAO’s ultimate goal is to promote sustainable and resilient food systems. This publication is part of the Country Investment Highlights series under the FAO Investment Centre’s Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme.

Book Strategic Priorities for Agricultural Development in Eastern and Central Africa

Download or read book Strategic Priorities for Agricultural Development in Eastern and Central Africa written by Omamo, Steven Were and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2006 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If agriculture in Eastern and Central Africa remains in its current state, not a single nation in the region will achieve the Millennium Development Goal of halving poverty by 2015. In the hopes of averting such a dismal outcome, this report analyzes agricultural development priorities and investment patterns in the region and their impact on growth and poverty rates, seeking an improved agricultural strategy. Using the Dynamic Research Evaluation for Management (DREAM) model and other tools to evaluate opportunities for increasing both agricultural and overall economic growth, the authors offer alternatives to the status quo. They propose approaches such as tailoring agricultural production to demand within Eastern and Central Africa, encouraging a wide variety of agricultural production to match the diversity of national demands and capacities, and promoting regional cooperation in agricultural development. Their analysis and conclusions should interest specialists in agricultural policy and investments, particularly those concerned with the impact of both on poverty reduction.
