Book excerpt: The study was conducted to analyse the socio-cultural setting of tribals in the study area to make a profile of tribal cattle owners, to ascertain technological gaps in breeding, feeding, management and health care practices recommended by scientists and adopted by tribals, to assess differential need perception about dairy development and to study the developmental personal engaged in tribal development in terms of their personal traitsl problems faced by them and their views regarding organizational functioning. Results revealed that the socio-cultural setting of tribals in the study area was found to be unique. The spread of civilization and modernization has been checked by numerous trills and plateans in area. The profile of the tribal cattle indicated that the impact of education was negligeble. More than 80 percent of the tribals were still below poverly line. Very few tribals were obtaining loan from formal credit sources because of difficult fallowup. The views of developmental personal indicated efferts must be made to ensure speedy implementation of programmes coupled with effective supervision. Poor transportation facilities acted as major constraint to visit tribal village. Dairying had considerable scope for development in konkan constituents especially from the point of view of better land utilisation in the regions. Overall gap against recommonded technology accounted for 75.38 percent for all the dimensions of dairy farming considered under the study. Adoption of balanced ration and concentrate feeding remained quite neglected practice in the study area.

Tribal farms are characterized by small & fragmented land holdings, low productivity of crop and livestock, disguised unemployment, poor income and low risk bearing ability. Thus it is important to improve the farm income and the standard of living of tribes through the practice of better farming system. The major policy implication is there exist sufficient scope to increase the farm income through reallocation of existing farm resources optimally under all farming systems.
