Book Study of the Sensitivity of Calculations for Fast Reactors Fueled with P239 U238 and U233 Th to Uncertainties in Nuclear Data

Download or read book Study of the Sensitivity of Calculations for Fast Reactors Fueled with P239 U238 and U233 Th to Uncertainties in Nuclear Data written by A. Gandini and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of uncertainties of nuclear data on the calculation of integral quantities for some fast breeder systems were evaluated. The integral quantities chosen were reactivity, initial breeding ratio, and initial internal breeding ratio. The fuels chosen were plutonium-239-uranium-238, both as metal and oxide, and uranium-233-thorium as oxide. The importance of propagation of errors on the uncertainty in reactivity was determined. Results indicated that because of inaccuracies in the values of nuclear parameters as known within the present state of the art'' the deviations of the calculated reactivities should be about, and possib1y larger than, 2% DELTA k/k for all the medium and large systems considered. The deviation of the initial breading ratio is 3.5%, and for the initial internal breeding ratio it is about 5%. The consequent uncertainty in the calculated critical mass is of the order of 4%.

Book Analysis of Uranium Supply to 2050

Download or read book Analysis of Uranium Supply to 2050 written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the first International Atomic Energy Agency projection of uranium supply and demand to 2050 and provides an understanding of how some alternative uranium supply scenarios could evolve over the period. The analysis is based on the current knowledge of uranium resources and production facilities, and takes into account the premise that they can operate with minimal environmental impact and employ the best practices in planning, operations, decommissioning and closure.

Download or read book Beyond Oil written by Kenneth S. Deffeyes and published by Hill and Wang. This book was released on 2005-03-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With world oil production about to peak and inexorably head toward steep decline, what fuels are available to meet rising global energy demands? That question, once thought to address a fairly remote contingency, has become ever more urgent, as a spate of books has drawn increased public attention to the imminent exhaustion of the economically vital world oil reserves. Deffeyes, a geologist who was among the first to warn of the coming oil crisis, now takes the next logical step and turns his attention to the earth's supply of potential replacement fuels. In Beyond Oil, he traces out their likely production futures, with special reference to that of oil, utilizing the same analytic tools developed by his former colleague, the pioneering petroleum-supply authority M. King Hubbert. The book includes chapters on natural gas, coal, tar sands and heavy oils, oil shale, uranium, and (although not strictly an energy resource itself) hydrogen. A concluding chapter on the overall energy picture covers the likely mix of energy sources the world can rely on for the near-term future, and the special roles that will need to be played by conservation, high-mileage diesel automobiles, nuclear power plants, and wind-generated electricity. An acknowledged expert in the field, Deffeyes brings a deeply informed, yet optimistic approach to bear on the growing debate. His main concern is not our long-term adaptation to a world beyond oil but our immediate future: "Through our inattention, we have wasted the years that we might have used to prepare for lessened oil supplies. The next ten years are critical."

Download or read book When Oil Peaked written by Kenneth S. Deffeyes and published by Hill and Wang. This book was released on 2010-09-28 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In two earlier books, Hubbert's Peak (2001) and Beyond Oil (2005), the geologist Kenneth S. Deffeyes laid out his rationale for concluding that world oil production would continue to follow a bell-shaped curve, with the smoothed-out peak somewhere in the middle of the first decade of this millennium—in keeping with the projections of his former colleague, the pioneering petroleum geologist M. King Hubbert. Deffeyes sees no reason to deviate from that prediction, despite the ensuing global recession and the extreme volatility in oil prices associated with it. In his view, the continued depletion of existing oil fields, compounded by shortsighted cutbacks in many exploration-and-development projects, virtually assures that the mid-decade peak in global oil production will never be surpassed. In When Oil Peaked, he revisits his original forecasts, examines the arguments that were made both for and against them, adds some new supporting material to his overall case, and applies the same mode of analysis to a number of other finite gifts from the Earth: mineral resources that may be also in shorter supply than "flat-Earth" prognosticators would have us believe.

Book Ion Solvation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Y. Marcus
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 1985

  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book Ion Solvation written by Y. Marcus and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1985 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical reactions generally take place in solution and often involve ions. The behaviour of ions in solution, manifested through ion solvation, is therefore of prime interest in chemistry. This book considers in depth the phenomenology of ion solvation and the models and interpretations that have been proposed as the physical causes for the observed phenomena. It contains a thorough discussion of the statistical thermodynamic background of the solvation process from which a discussion of the actual thermodynamics is developed. This, in turn, serves as a background to the structural and kinetic features of ion solvation.
