Book excerpt: This paper shows that an understanding of the nature of the x-ray and neutron producing processes in the plasma focus requires a study of the 'fine structure' of the plasma focus and that this fine structure study requires diagnostic techniques with spacial resolution down to 50 micrometers and time resolution to about 10 ns. Fortunately it has been possible to develop measuring equipment with these high resolutions.

The decay of the magnetic fields of these toroidal vortices generates electric fields which accelerate the electrons and deuterons to produce x-rays and neutrons. Estimated electron densities in the channel are 10 to the power of 20/cc and magnetic fields up to 100 megagauss are believed to exist there. A viable model for neutron and x-ray production in the pinch effect has now at last come forward. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report investigates the correlation between the neutron (and x-ray) emission intensity and the intensity of the particle beams generated in a plasma focus discharge in deuterium as an extension of our previous work on scaling laws of x-ray and neutron production. The structure of dense plasmoids which emit MeV ions has been recorded by ion imaging with pinhole camera and contact print techniques. The plasmoids are generated in the same region in which particle beams, neutron and x-ray emission reach a maximum of intensity. Sharply defined boundaries of the ion-beam source and of plasmoids have been obtained by ion track etching on plastic material CR-39.

Book excerpt: Characteristics of neutron production from a 16-27 kJ plasma focus device were systematically studied for device parameters of bank energy, gas pressure, gas impurities and anode geometry. Neutron yields of 10 to the 9th power - to -10 to the 10th power per discharge were obtained with deuterium. Comparison of neutron and hard x-ray production was made using photomultiplier-plastic scintillator detectors. The axial neutron distribution was determined using a paraffin-polyethelene collimator. A good time correlation between the hard x-rays and the neutrons was observed. The dependence of the axial neutron source distribution on pressure was obtained and related to the shape of the collapsing plasma boundary. (Author).
