Book Study of the Polarized Structure Functions of the Neutron at Low Q 2 Using Polarized He 3

Download or read book Study of the Polarized Structure Functions of the Neutron at Low Q 2 Using Polarized He 3 written by S. H. Choi and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have measured the electron-He-3 longitudinal and transverse spin dependent inclusive cross sections {pol}He-3({pol}e, e-prime), mostly in the resonance region (up to W ~ 2.5 GeV), over a wide range of four-momentum transfer (Q**2 = 0.03 - 1GeV**2). The longitudinally polarized electron beam of energy ranging from 0.86 to 5.1 GeV of the Jefferson Lab was scattered at a fixed angle of 15.5 degrees, on a high pressure polarized He-3 target in Hall A. The spin dependent structure functions g_1(x), g_2(x) have been extracted and their moments were evaluated. The GDH integral shows dramatic transition from large Q**2 domain to low Q**2 domain in the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule for g_2 seems to hold within experimental errors. d_2 is quite large and positive consistent with the SLAC data but at odds with lattice QCD calculation.

Book Gdh 2000 The Gerasimov drell hearn Sum Rule The Nucleon Spin Structure In The Resonance Region

Download or read book Gdh 2000 The Gerasimov drell hearn Sum Rule The Nucleon Spin Structure In The Resonance Region written by Dieter Drechsel and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-02-05 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of spin in general, and of the nucleon spin structure in particular, has been full of surprises. For the past 25 years deep inelastic lepton scattering has been studied to determine the carriers of the nucleon spin. However, it was realized only recently that a full understanding of the nucleon spin will also require detailed information on the helicity structure in the resonance region, i.e. in the realm of nonperturbative QCD.This volume gives a status report on the spin structure in the nucleon resonance region, focusing on: new experimental results from SLAC and HERMES; a first glance at the JLab experiments to map out the spin structure functions at low and intermediate four-momentum transfers; the pioneering experiment at MAMI (Mainz) to determine the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for real photons; and recent theoretical concepts and investigations to describe the spin structure in the frameworks of higher twist expansion, phenomenological models and chiral perturbation theory.

Book Testing Qcd Through Spin Observables In Nuclear Targets

Download or read book Testing Qcd Through Spin Observables In Nuclear Targets written by Jian-ping Chen and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003-01-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the invited talks and contributed papers presented at the workshop on “Testing QCD Through Spin Observables in Nuclear Targets”, held at the University of Virginia in April 2002.The workshop was proposed in the context of the large number of experiments that have used polarized deuterons or polarized 3He to extract information about the spin parameters of the neutron. The motivation for this workshop was to study the effects of the nuclear medium on the spin properties of the bound nucleon and to explore issues in QCD that might be resolved through spin observables in nuclear targets: What is the effect of the nuclear medium on the measured asymmetries? How have the latest results on the spin structure of the nucleon and the nucleon form factors changed our thinking? What advances are anticipated in the development of polarized targets?

Book The Q 2 Dependence of the Polarized Structure Functions

Download or read book The Q 2 Dependence of the Polarized Structure Functions written by Tony Forest and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive program to measure polarized structure functions in the resonance region and beyond using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab has completed taking data. One of the experimental goals is to measure the first moment (Gamma_1) of the polarized structure function, g_1, as a function of Q^2 by scattering polarized electrons from polarized proton (NH_3) and deuteron (ND_3) targets. Deep inelastic scattering measurements obtain positive values for the first moment at large Q^2. The first moment is constrained by the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule ^1 to have anegative slope at the photon point. The CLAS measurements encompass the transition from the low Q^2 region dominated by resonances and other non-perturbative effects to the high Q^2 region where quasi-free partons dominate the interaction.

Book The Spin Structure of 3He and the Neutron at Low Q2

Download or read book The Spin Structure of 3He and the Neutron at Low Q2 written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1980's, the study of nucleon (proton or neutron) spin structure has been an active field both experimentally and theoretically. One of the primary goals of this work is to test our understanding of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the fundamental theory of the strong interaction. In the high energy region of asymptotically free quarks, QCD has been verified. However, verifiable predictions in the low energy region are harder to obtain due to the complex interactions between the nucleon's constituents: quarks and gluons. In the non-pertubative regime, low-energy effective field theories such as chiral perturbation theory provide predictions for the spin structure functions in the form of sum rules. Spin-dependent sum rules such as the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule are important tools available to study nucleon spin structure. Originally derived for real photon absorption, the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn (GDH) sum rule was first extended for virtual photon absorption in 1989. The extension of the sum rule provides a unique relation, valid at any momentum transfer ($Q{̂2}$), that can be used to study the nucleon spin structure and make comparisons between theoretical predictions and experimental data. Experiment E97-110 was performed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) to examine the spin structure of the neutron and ${̂3}$He. The Jefferson Lab longitudinally-polarized electron beam with incident energies between 1.1 and 4.4 GeV was scattered from a longitudinally or transversely polarized ${̂3}$He gas target in the Hall A end station. Asymmetries and polarized cross-section differences were measured in the quasielastic and resonance regions to extract the spin structure functions $g_{1}(x,Q{̂2})$ and $g_{2}(x,Q{̂2})$ at low momentum transfers (0.02 $
