Book A Kinetic Study of Plutonium Dioxide Dissolution in Hydrochloric Acid Using Iron II as an Electron Transfer Catalyst

Download or read book A Kinetic Study of Plutonium Dioxide Dissolution in Hydrochloric Acid Using Iron II as an Electron Transfer Catalyst written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective dissolution of plutonium dioxide has traditionally been accomplished by contact with strong nitric acid containing a small amount of fluoride at temperatures of [approximately] 100 C. In spite of these aggressive conditions, PuO[sub 2] dissolution is sometimes incomplete requiring additional contact with the solvent. This work focused on an alternative to conventional dissolution in nitric acid where an electron transfer catalyst, Fe(II), was used in hydrochloric acid. Cyclic voltammetry was employed as an in-situ analytical technique for monitoring the dissolution reaction rate. The plutonium oxide selected for this study was decomposed plutonium oxalate with> 95% of the material having a particle diameter (

Book The Kinetics of Dissolution of Beta uranium Trioxide in Acid and Carbonate Solutions Part 1 Acid Solutions

Download or read book The Kinetics of Dissolution of Beta uranium Trioxide in Acid and Carbonate Solutions Part 1 Acid Solutions written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kinetics of dissolution of beta-uranium trioxide in acid solutions have been studied as functions of stirring rate, hydrogen ion concentration, various cations and anions in the acid solutions and temperature. The salient features are that the dissolution rates were: (i) Independent of stirring rate. (ii) Dependent on 0.5-0.6 order of the hydrogen ion concentration. (iii) Inhibited by the presence of cations in solution. The rate decreased in the order Mg2+>Li+>Na+>NH4+>K+>Cs+. (iv) Increased by sulphate ions but unaffected by chloride, nitrate and perchlorate ions. (v) Arrhenius functions of temperature, with an activation energy of about 12 kcal per mol. The observed kinetic data has been rationalised in terms of a Charge Transfer mechanism, namely, the transfer of uranyl cations and protonated oxide anions across the electrochemical potential barrier at the solid-solution phase boundary is the rate-determining step during the dissolution reaction.

Book Plutonium Oxide Dissolution

Download or read book Plutonium Oxide Dissolution written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several processing options for dissolving plutonium oxide (PuO2) from high-fired materials have been studied. The scoping studies performed on these options were focused on PuO2 typically generated by burning plutonium metal and PuO2 produced during incineration of alpha contaminated waste. At least two processing options remain applicable for dissolving high-fired PuO2 in canyon dissolvers. The options involve solid solution formation of PuO2 With uranium oxide (UO2) and alloying incinerator ash with aluminum. An oxidative dissolution process involving nitric acid solutions containing a strong oxidizing agent, such as cerium (IV), was neither proven nor rejected. This uncertainty was due to difficulty in regenerating cerium (IV) ions during dissolution. However, recent work on silver-catalyzed dissolution of PuO2 with persulfate has demonstrated that persulfate ions regenerate silver (II). Use of persulfate to regenerate cerium (IV) or bismuth (V) ions during dissolution of PuO2 materials may warrant further study.
