Book Study of the Integration of Wind Tunnel and Computational Methods for Aerodynamic Configurations

Download or read book Study of the Integration of Wind Tunnel and Computational Methods for Aerodynamic Configurations written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of using a low-order panel code to estimate wind tunnel wall corrections. The corrections were found by two computations. The first computation included the test model and the surrounding wind tunnel walls, while in the second computation the wind tunnel walls were removed. The difference between the force and moment coefficients obtained by comparing these two cases allowed the determination of the wall corrections. The technique was verified by matching the test-section, wall-pressure signature from a wind tunnel test with the signature predicted by the panel code. To prove the viability of the technique, two cases were considered. The first was a two-dimensional high-lift wing with a flap that was tested in the 7- by 10-foot wind tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center. The second was a 1/32-scale model of the F/A-18 aircraft which was tested in the low-speed wind tunnel at San Diego State University. The panel code used was PMARC (Panel Method Ames Research Center). Results of this study indicate that the proposed wind tunnel wall correction method is comparable to other methods and that it also inherently includes the corrections due to model blockage and wing lift. Book excerpt: Although great advances in computational methods have been made in recent years, wind tunnel tests remain essential for obtaining the full range of data required to guide detailed design decisions for various practical engineering problems. This book collects original and innovative research studies on recent applications in wind tunnel tests, exhibiting various investigation directions and providing a bird’s eye view on this broad subject area. It is composed of seven chapters that have been grouped in two major parts. The first part of the book (chapters 1–4) deals with wind tunnel technologies and devices. The second part (chapters 5–7) deals with the latest applications of wind tunnel testing. The text is addressed not only to researchers but also to professional engineers, engineering lecturers, and students seeking to gain better understanding of the current status of wind tunnels. Through its seven chapters, the reader will have an access to a wide range of works related to wind tunnel testing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind Tunnel Test Techniques: Design and Use at Low and High Speeds with Statistical Engineering Applications provides an up-to-date treatment of the topic. Beginning with a brief history of wind tunnels and its types and uses, the book goes on to cover subsonic, supersonic and hypersonic wind tunnel design and construction, calibration, boundary corrections, flow quality assessment, pressure surveys, and dynamic testing. It also focuses on wind tunnel facilities, making it useful for both the designer and operator. Engineers and graduate students in aerospace, automotive and similar programs will find this book useful in their work with experimental aerodynamics, gas dynamics, facility design and performance. Deals with a broad range of flow speeds in wind tunnels, from low speed to high speed Provides a discussion of similarity laws as well as material on statistical analysis Includes coverage on facility-to-facility and facility-to-CFD correlation Presents advanced topics such as cryogenic wind tunnels, ground simulation in automotive testing, and propulsion testing

Book Applied Computational Aerodynamics

Download or read book Applied Computational Aerodynamics written by P. A. Henne and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 1990 with total page 986 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To stay on the forefront of aerospace design, you need state-of-the-art knowledge on the computational power now in use. "Applied Computational Aerodynamics" goes beyond the theories to focus on real world applications. Richly illustrated chapters feature geometric types of problems ranging from the classic airfoil problem to the complexity of complete aircraft such as the 737, 7J7, the F-16, and the Space Shuttle launch configuration. Plus, applications for components are also detailed, including wings, high-lift systems, propulsion system components, and rotors. Featuring a complete overview of design developments and studies, with hundreds of illustrations (more than 60 in full color) spanning more than 900 pages, this is truly an impressive resource.
