Download or read book Reports on the Cost of Administration of Criminal Justice in Omaha and Lincoln Nebraska 1933 written by Hattie Plum Williams and published by . This book was released on 2024-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The professional life of Hattie Plum Williams (1878-1963) epitomized the first generation of professional women sociologists on the Great Plains. At the University of Nebraska, she became the first woman in the world known to hold a regular appointment as chair of a coeducational, doctoral department of sociology (1923-1928). Often characterized as a social worker, her professional allegiance remained to sociology. Williams' unsung labors in the early 1930s on behalf of the National Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement (NCLOE) resulted in two detailed, typewritten accounts of crime and criminal justice in Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska. Her data collection, along with that of many researchers in other cities, provided an empirical foundation for the repeal of prohibition. Unlike other reports, however, Williams' studies of Lincoln and Omaha were the only cost of crime investigations undertaken, directed, and completed essentially singlehandedly by a woman researcher. The reports are classic examples of her selfless dedication to scholarship, her state, and her university. This edition preserves Williams' vulnerable typescripts and, together with an illuminating introduction by Michael R. Hill, presents her work for the NCLOE in the format of a contextual casebook providing instructive appendices by and about Williams as well as related materials issued by the NCLOE.

Book The Costs of Crime and Justice

Download or read book The Costs of Crime and Justice written by Mark A. Cohen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Costs of Crime and Justice, Mark Cohen presents a comprehensive view of the financial setbacks of criminal behaviour. Victims of crime might incur medical costs, lost wages and property damage; while for some crimes pain, suffering and reduced quality of life suffered by victims far exceeds any physical damage. The government also incurs costs as the provider of mental health services, police, courts and prisons. Cohen argues that understanding the costs of crime can lead to important insights and policy conclusions - both in terms of criminal justice policy but also in terms of other social ills that compete with crime for government funding. This book systematically discusses the numerous methodological approaches and tallies up what is known about the costs of crime A must-read for anyone involved in public policy, The Costs of Crime and Justice consolidates the diverse research in this area but also makes one of the most valuable contributions to date to the study of the economics of criminal behavior.

Book Criminal Justice System

Download or read book Criminal Justice System written by United States. National Advisory Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Goals and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual contains the standards for reform in the management and operation of the criminal justice system, focusing on planning, education, and information systems. Planning for resource allocation is one of the most important functions that a criminal justice agency performs. The 1968 Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act required the creation of state criminal justice planning agencies and the development of annual state comprehensive plans as a contingency for state participation in federal criminal justice funding. In the initial section of this volume, the National Advisory Commission points out the need for additional planning at the metropolitan and regional levels, and indicates the necessity for quantifying performance objectives. It also stresses participation in the planning process by criminal justice agencies, government departments and private citizens. The Commission recommends the development of state integrated multiyear planning and the establishment of criminal justice coordinating councils by all major cities and counties. Other areas of concern to the Commission, in addition to management and budget planning, include systems analysis, information systems, evaluation, personnel training, and criminal code revision. These and other commission proposals appear in the form of specific standards and recommendations -- nearly 70 in all -- that spell out in detail what the segments of the criminal justice system-the police, courts, and correctional agencies can do to upgrade and modernize many of their functions. This manual is a reference work for the practitioner as well as the interested layman.
