Book excerpt: Information is provided about the distribution of karaka (Corynocarpus laevigatus J.R. et G. Forst.) in the Wellington Conservancy of the Dept. of Conservation. Karaka is an evergreen tree, with dark green thick glossy leaves, that grows to 20 m tall. It is found in coastal and lowland forest in the North Island and northern South Island and is closely related to species found in the New Hebrides and New Caledonia. The species is known in other countries as the "New Zealand laurel" or "karakaranut." Karaka is an important food for birds, with kereru (New Zealand pigeon, Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae) probably its main dispersal agent. Recommendations are made for conservation management of karaka in Wellington.
