Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will serve as the definitive reference work on the basic physiology, biochemistry, development, genetics, and molecular biology of Neurospora, together with a description of basic laboratory methods. Among the filamentous fungi, Neurospora is a basic model organism, used initially in the establishment of the one-gene, one-enzyme principle, and it has become a favored research organism in a variety of biological problems since that time. Until now, there has been no standard guide to the organism. The book reviews early research since 1927 and describes the current state of the major research programs now being pursued. Each chapter includes detailed literature references for the scholar and experimentalist. Both researchers in the filamentous fungi and biologists requiring information about Neurospora will find this an invaluable resource because it gathers 75 years of scattered research literature into a coherent account.

Book Biochemistry of Cell Walls and Membranes in Fungi

Download or read book Biochemistry of Cell Walls and Membranes in Fungi written by Paul J. Kuhn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the many advances made during the last decade in various aspects of fungal biochemistry, there have been very few volumes devoted to the sub ject in recent years. This lack is all the more surprising in view of the increas ing use of fungi in gene manipulation studies and in biotechnological ap plications, and of the current interest in the biorational discovery of novel agents for the control of fungal pathogens of plants and humans. We hope that this book goes some way to rectifying this situation by providing an up to-date account of selected developments in two important areas, namely cell walls and membranes. Topics included in the book concern both yeasts and filamentous fungi. Although the main emphasis is on biogenesis, functional aspects are also discussed, e.g. the role of glycoproteins in recognition of sterols in mem branes and of calcium in regulation. Several contributions describe in terference with the 'normal' biochemistry of cell walls and membranes with a view to increasing fundamental knowledge, but also highly relevant to the design of new fungicides and antimycotics. The steadily increasing impact of molecular biology on the study of fungal biochemistry is highlighted throughout.

Book Fungal Cell Wall

    Book Details:
  • Author : José Ruiz-Herrera
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 1991-11-22
  • ISBN : 9780849366727
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Fungal Cell Wall written by José Ruiz-Herrera and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-11-22 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fungal Cell Wall presents a comprehensive examination of the structure, synthesis, and growth of the fungal cell wall and explores the reasons for the cell wall's importance to the survival of fungi. Topics covered include the composition and structure of the fungal cell wall and how they are affected by endogenous and external factors; the structure and synthesis of glucans, chitin, and glycoproteins; and the mechanisms of secretion, organization, and final assembly of the cell wall components. The book also features excellent bibliographical coverage, which provides insight into the historical development of current ideas and the basis of current trends in research. Researchers and students in biology, microbiology, mycology, botany, and medical and plant pathology will find this book essential for reference information regarding fungi.

Book Growth Differentiation and Sexuality

Download or read book Growth Differentiation and Sexuality written by Friedhelm Meinhardt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycology, the study of fungi, originated as a subdiscipline of botany and was a descriptive discipline, largely neglected as an experimental science until the early years of this century. A seminal paper by Blakeslee in 1904 provided evidence for self-incompatibility, termed "heterothallism", and stimulated interest in studies related to the control of sexual reproduction in fungi by mating-type specificities. Soon to follow was the demonstration that sexually reproducing fungi exhibit Mendelian inheritance and that it was possible to conduct formal genetic analysis with fungi. The names Burgeff, Kniep and Lindegren are all associated with this early period of fungal genetics research. These studies and the discovery of penicillin by Fleming, who shared a Nobel Prize in 1945, provided further impetus for experimental research with fungi. Thus began a period of interest in mutation induction and analysis of mutants for bio chemical traits. Such fundamental research, conducted largely with Neurospora crassa, led to the one gene: one enzyme hypothesis and to a second Nobel Prize for fungal research awarded to Beadle and Tatum in 1958. Fundamental research in biochemical genetics was extended to other fungi, especially to Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and by the mid-1960s fungal systems were much favored for studies in eukaryotic molecular biology and were soon able to compete with bacterial systems in the molecular arena.

Book Growth Differentiation and Sexuality

Download or read book Growth Differentiation and Sexuality written by Ursula Kües and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-07-19 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since publication of the first edition of Volume I in 1994, the field of fungal biology has developed tremendously, mainly through the advancement of various molecular techniques and international fungal genome projects. To accommodate these developments, the second edition has been completely updated. Six chapters have been revised by former authors, others by newly recruited experts, and also novel subjects, emerged in more recent years, have been added to the book. Leading scientists in the field have compiled comprehensive overviews as well as latest results obtained from cytological, genetic and molecular studies. Topics include: cellular and colony growth of fungi, cellular fusion and incompatibility, senescence and programmed cell death, environmental and physiological signalling in differentiation processes, asexual and sexual reproduction, mitosis and meiosis of various types of fungi. Both parallels and differences become visible between individual fungi as well as between fungal classes.

Book Tip Growth in Plant and Fungal Cells

Download or read book Tip Growth in Plant and Fungal Cells written by I. B. Heath and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tip Growth in Plant and Fungal Cells covers the basis of the cellular processes of tip growing plants. The book discusses the role of cell wall architecture in fungal tip growth generation; the enzymology of tip growth in fungi; and the electrobiology of apical growth. The text also describes the role of calcium ions in tip growth of pollen tubes and moss protonema cells; the role of actin in tip growth; and the significance of microtubules in the organization of the cytoplasm and the regulation of tip growth. The role of the endomembrane system of plants and fungi in surface generation in tip-growing cells; the role of vesicles in apical growth; and a new mathematical model of hyphal morphogenesis are considered. The book further demonstrates a comparison of tip growth in prokaryotic and eukaryotic filamentous microorganisms; tip growth and transition to secondary wall synthesis in developing cotton hairs; and neuronal tip growth. The text then encompasses secretion and organelle biogenesis, with emphasis on problems in targeting proteins to specific subcellular compartments. Botanists, microbiologists, geneticists, molecular biologists, cellular biologists, plant pathologists, and people involved in agricultural research will find the book invaluable.
