Book Searches for Dijet Resonances

Download or read book Searches for Dijet Resonances written by Lydia Audrey Beresford and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses one of the most intriguing mysteries of our universe: the nature of dark matter. The results presented here mark a significant and substantial contribution to the search for new physics, in particular for new particles that couple to dark matter. The first analysis presented is a search for heavy new particles that decay into pairs of hadronic jets (dijets). This pioneering analysis explores unprecedented dijet invariant masses, reaching nearly 7 TeV, and sets constraints on several important new physics models. The two subsequent analyses focus on the difficult low dijet mass region, down to 200 GeV, and employ a novel technique to efficiently gather low-mass dijet events. The results of these analyses transcend the long-standing constraints on dark matter mediator particles set by several existing experiments.

Book A Proposal to Study Particle Production Spectra and Multiplicities in High Energy Hadron hadron Collisions and for a Beam Survey and Quark Search

Download or read book A Proposal to Study Particle Production Spectra and Multiplicities in High Energy Hadron hadron Collisions and for a Beam Survey and Quark Search written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We propose an experimental study at the new 500 GeV accelerator of the differential cross-section for particle production in hadron-hadron collisions. The projectile, and the observed single particle, will range over all combinations of positive and negative [pi], K and p, with momenta extending up to the highest available. Enough of the secondary particle momentum range will be covered to permit us to determine by integration the multiplicity of the produced particle. Single particles will be detected in a simple spectrometer consisting of wire chambers and a small bending magnet. The configuration of the spectrometer components will be variable so that the overall spectrometer length can be kept proportional to the secondary momentum. The momentum resolution {male}P/P = ±0.8% and the invariant phase space acceptance P2d[Omega]dP/E = 1.3x10−3 (GeV/c)2 will then be the same at all momenta. Particle identification will be by means of threshold Cherenkov counters, with 104: 1 rejection up to at least 250 GeV/c. Our experimental arrangement is thought to be simple and yet powerful, and we propose its use initially with incident protons and a nuclear target for a beam survey and quark search. Subsequent measurements will be carried out with a hydrogen target in a high intensity secondary beam.

Book Studies of Target Fragmentation in Intermediate Energy Relativistic and Ultra relativistic Nuclear Collisions

Download or read book Studies of Target Fragmentation in Intermediate Energy Relativistic and Ultra relativistic Nuclear Collisions written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work described herein is part of a project involving the study of low energy (10 MeV/A), intermediate energy (10--100 MeV/A) and relativistic ( 250 MeV/A) heavy ion reactions. In the low energy regime, we published a monograph on the properties of the heaviest elements and used that publication as a basis for making a set of best'' semi-empirical predictions of heavy element decay properties. The intermediate energy research effort focussed upon the completion of studies already begun and the initiation of a number of new experiments. In our study of a interaction of 21 MeV/nucleon 129Xe with 197Au, we compared the characteristics of the observed deep inelastic phenomena with various models of dissipative reactions and found significant discrepancies between observations and predictions. These discrepancies seemed to be caused by an improper treatment of pre-equilibrium in the early stages of the collision. In our study of the relativistic interaction of 400 MeV/nucleon 12C with 197Au, we reported the first direct physical measurement of the properties of the spallation residues from a nucleus-nucleus collision. We found the residue energies to be much lower than those predicted by the intranuclear cascade model, indicating some substantial modifications of that model are needed. But, we also found, indications of significant, non-zero values of the residue transverse momentum, a finding that calls into question the interpretation of a number of radiochemical recoil studies of the kinematics of high energy reactions. A program of performing numerical simulations of intermediate and high energy nuclear collisions using the QMD model was initiated.

Book Search for Pre existing Delta States at BLAST from 2H e E Delta

Download or read book Search for Pre existing Delta States at BLAST from 2H e E Delta written by Greene Chana M. (Chana Michelle) and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator Center a comprehensive study of low-Q2 spin-dependent electron scattering from deuterium has been carried out using the Bates Large Acceptance Spectrometer Toroid (BLAST). This experiment has employed an 850 MeV polarized electron beam from the MIT-Bates linear accelerator incident on an internal polarized deuterium target and the BLAST detector. Deuterium's simple composition is an important factor in understanding the structure of the inter-nucleon potential. The pion production region has a resonant structure and is a promising location to search for pre-existing delta particles in deuterium. While, theoretical calculations predict that delta resonant states account for anywhere from 0.25 to 3.60% of the nuclear wave function, more realistic predictions for deuterium range from 0.3 to 1.0%. This thesis presents the determination of the (e, e'++) event rate from deuterium, the first of many steps towards a complete study of delta resonant states.

Book Measurements of Bottom Anti bottom Azimuthal Production Correlations in Proton Anti proton Collisions at S 1 2

Download or read book Measurements of Bottom Anti bottom Azimuthal Production Correlations in Proton Anti proton Collisions at S 1 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have measured the azimuthal angular correlation of b{bar b} production, using 86.5 pb−1 of data collected by Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) in p{bar p} collisions at √s = 1.8 TeV during 1994-1995. In high-energy p{bar p} collisions, such as at the Tevatron, b{bar b} production can be schematically categorized into three mechanisms. The leading-order (LO) process is ''flavor creation'', where both b and {bar b} quarks substantially participate in the hard scattering and result in a distinct back-to-back signal in final state. The ''flavor excitation'' and the ''gluon splitting'' processes, which appear at next-leading-order (NLO), are known to make a comparable contribution to total b{bar b} cross section, while providing very different opening angle distributions from the LO process. An azimuthal opening angle between bottom and anti-bottom, [Delta][phi], has been used for the correlation measurement to probe the interaction creating b{bar b} pairs. The [Delta][phi] distribution has been obtained from two different methods. one method measures the [Delta][phi] between bottom hadrons using events with two reconstructed secondary vertex tags. The other method uses b{bar b} → (J/[psi]X)(lX') events, where the charged lepton (l) is an electron (e) or a muon ([mu]), to measure [Delta][phi] between bottom quarks. The b{bar b} purity is determined as a function of [Delta][phi] by fitting the decay length of the J/[psi] and the impact parameter of the l. Both methods quantify the contribution from higher-order production mechanisms by the fraction of the b{bar b} pairs produced in the same azimuthal hemisphere, f{sub toward}. The measured f{sub toward} values are consistent with both parton shower Monte Carlo and NLO QCD predictions.
