Johnson made image schema one of the cornerstone concepts of the emerging experientialist paradigm of Cognitive Linguistics, a framework founded upon the rejection of the mind-body dichotomy and stressing the fundamentally embodied nature of meaning, imagination and reason - hence language. Conceived of as the pre-linguistic, dynamic and highly schematic gestalts arising directly from motor movement, object manipulation, and perceptual interaction, image schemas served to anchor abstract reasoning and imagination to sensori-motor patterns in the conceptual theory of metaphor. Being itself informed by preceding crosslinguistic work on semantic primitives in the linguistic representations of spatial relations (carried out by L. Talmy, R. Langacker, and others), the notion has inspired a large amount of subsequent research and debate on diverse issues ranging from the meaning, structure and acquisition of natural languages to the embodied mind itself. All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the role of schema and cognitive models in teaching and learning geometry. Differences in schema structure and problem solving behavior for different ability levels will be analyzed. In this study I will also introduce some instructional design strategies based on the findings. There are three parts in this paper: The pre-test, the instructional design and the post-test. In the pre-test there are two groups of higher secondary school students - high achievers group and low achievers group - participating in a test with different kinds of geometric problem about properties of circle. Questions are designed to test language ability, cognitive loads, problem solving style and generative ability in problem solving. An open-ended question is set to investigate the schema difference for high and low achievers through an analysis by solution path diagram. Results show that high achievers organize their knowledge with structured schema and demonstrate a higher generative ability. In the instructional design part I will present some strategies such as diagram- text integrated teaching to help students overcoming limits of cognitive loads. In the post-test part, low achievers show significant improvements in solving geometric problems after attending the class that is carefully designed with strategies mentioned in the previous part. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Procedural semantics models have diminished the distinction between data structures and procedures in computer simulations of human intelligence. This development has theoretical consequences for models of cognition. One type of procedural semantics model, called schema theory, is presented, and a variety of cognitive processes are explained in terms of the theory. In schema theory, the flow of processing control is determined not by a central monitor, but by interactions among the conceptual entities (schemata) that make up the model. Intelligence is distributed in this model. Schemata interact by providing activation resources to each other. Instantiation is the special process whereby a partial copy of a strongly activated schema is created. In this copy, the variables of the schema are filled with particular values. Such copies make up specific or episodic memory. The schemata on which they are based comprise generic or semantic memory. Many of the phenomena of consciousness and of short-term and long-term memory are explained on the basis of the activation processes of schema theory. Unactivated schemata are equivalent to all the unconscious knowledge in a person's long-term memory. Three dimensions for distinguishing or comparing schemata are proposed; function, abstractness, and scope. The contrasts between multi-store models of cognition and schema theory are summarized.

Book excerpt: In the last 25 years foreign language teaching has been able to increase its efficiency through an orientation towards authentic language materials, pragmatic language functions and interactive learning methods. However, so far foreign language teaching has lacked a sufficiently strong theoretical framework to support the teaching of language in all its aspects. Arguably, such a linguistic theory has to be usage-based and cognition-oriented. Since cognitive linguistics - and especially cognitive grammar - is concerned with conceptual issues against the larger background of human cognition and because it is based on actual language use, it becomes a powerful tool for dealing adequately with the main issues of a pedagogical grammar. A pedagogical grammar aims at providing all the essential linguistic patterns considered relevant by theoretical and descriptive linguistics for the preparation of teaching materials and their exploitation in foreign language instruction. The volume contains thirteen contributions organized into three parts. In Part 1 Langacker, Taylor and Broccias introduce the basic grammar concepts, rules and models that are available in cognitive linguistics and which are directly relevant to the construction of a pedagogical grammar. Meunier, on the other hand, describes how such a grammar could benefit from corpus linguistics. Part 2 looks at some cognitive tools and conceptual errors with contributions by Danesi and Maldonado and also reconsiders contrastive analysis in the papers by Ruiz de Mendoza and Valenzuela & Rojo.
