Book excerpt: The knowledge of rainfall in terms of its intensity, duration, frequency, temporal distribution and droplet size distribution are important for appropriate estimation of runoff and erosion. That is required for hydrologic design of soil and water conservation structures. However the rainfall is the natural process and governed by the random processes. It takes several years to cover the entire range of above stated parameters and to study their effects on runoff and erosion. Therefore for quick understanding of this process and to accelerate the part of research on this aspect, it is necessary to observe the desired range of these parameters in the laboratory on controlled situation. Rainfall simulators they have the capability to vary the rainfall parameters in the desired range and therefore useful for such studies. Rainfall simulators offer the possibility of the advances in understanding the basic processes of runoff and erosion and the speed of the research is accelerated. One needs not to wait for the right kind of rains to come at right time for obtaining the results. The relationship developed include: water pressure, raindrop size and rainfall intensity with soil loss.

Book excerpt: Soil hydrology determines the water–soil–plant interactions in the Earth’s system because porous medium acts as an interface within the atmosphere and lithosphere; regulates main processes such as runoff discharge, aquifer recharge, movement of water, and solutes into the soil; and ultimately the amount of water retained and available for plants growth. Soil hydrology can be strongly affected by land management. Therefore, investigations aimed at assessing the impact of land management changes on soil hydrology are necessary, especially to optimize water resources. This Special Issue collects 12 original contributions addressing the state-of-the-art advances in soil hydrology for sustainable land management. These contributions cover a wide range of topics including (i) the effects of land use change, (ii) water use efficiency, (iii) erosion risk, (iv) solute transport, and (v) new methods and devices for improved characterization of soil physical and hydraulic properties. They include both field and laboratory experiments as well as modelling studies. Different spatial scales, i.e., from field to regional scales, and a wide range of geographic regions are also covered. It utilizes decades of soil erosion data to take a comprehensive and balanced approach in covering various watershed erosion processes. While there are many works on soil erosion and conservation, this book fills the gaps in previously published research by focusing more on mass movement, gully erosion, soil piping/tunnel erosion, and the spatial interactions of different erosion processes. Additionally, the book examines erosion processes in extreme rainfall events, something typically absent in short-term studies but discussed in detail here as the book draws on 60 years of research and observations, including 30 years of the author's own investigations of erosion under a wide range of rainfall conditions. The book is divided into 3 parts, and is intended for soil erosion researchers and practitioners, and postgraduate students studying soil erosion and water conservation. Part 1 opens with a comprehensive and critical review of existing literature on soil erosion processes, discusses this book's place among existing literature, and examines the major erosion processes (rainwash, gully erosion, tunnel erosion, and mass movements) including their controlling factors and mechanisms. Part 2 explores the spatial interactions of these different erosion processes to provide a prerequisite for effective design of comprehensive soil erosion control measures in a watershed. Book excerpt: This volume includes an important contribution to the knowledge of active soil erosion, especially in typical sites in the Mediterranean belt, where soil degradation is very acute. On the other hand a set of papers is presented which enlighten the important role of laboratory research in the fundamental parametric investigation of processes, i.e. erosion by rain. This is in line with the progressing integration of field and laboratory studies, which is stimulated by more frequent feed-back operations. Finally we want to draw attention to the work of a restricted number of authors who are engaged in the difficult elaboration of pure theoretical models which may pollinate empirical research, by providing new concepts to be tested. Therefore, the fairly extensive publication of two papers by Culling on soil creep mechanisms, whereby the basic force-resistance problem of erosion is discussed at the level of the individual particles. All the other contributions are focused mainly on the processes of erosion by rain. The use of rainfall simulators is very common nowadays. But investigators are not always able to produce full fall velocity of waterdrops. Epema & Riezebos give complementary information on the erosivity of simulators with restricted fall heights. Moeyersons discusses splash erosion under oblique rain, produced with his newly-built S.T.O.R.M-1 simulator. This important contribution may stimulate further investigations on the nearly unknown effects of oblique rain. Bryan & De Ploey examined the comparability of erodibility measurements in two laboratories with different experimental set-ups. They obtained a similar gross ranking of Canadian and Belgian topsoils. Both saturation overland flow and subsurface flow are important runoff sources under the rainforests of northeastern Queensland. Interesting, there, is the correlation between soil colour and hydraulic conductivity observed by Bonell, Gilmour& Cassells. Runoff generation was also a main topic of Imeson's research in northern Morocco, stressing the mechanisms of surface crusting on clayish topsoils. For southeastern Spain Thornes & Gilman discuss the applicability of erosion models based on fairly simple equations of the "Musgrave-type". After Richter (Germany) and Vogt (France) it is Tropeano who completes the image of erosion hazards in European vineyards. He shows that denudation is at the minimum in old vineyards, cultivated with manual tools only. Also in Italy van Asch collected important data about splash erosion and rainwash on Calabrian soils. He points out a fundamental distinction between transport-limited and detachment-limited erosion rates on cultivated fields and fallow land. For a representative first order catchment in Central-Java van der Linden comments contrasting denudation rates derived from erosion plot data and river load measurements. Here too, on some slopes, detachment-limited erosion seems to occur. The effects of oblique rain, time-dependent phenomena such as crusting and runoff generation, detachment-limited and transport-limited erosion including colluvial deposition, are all aspects of single rainstorms and short rainy periods for which particular, predictive models have to be built. Moreover, it is argued that flume experiments may be an economic way to establish gross erodibility classifications. The present volume may give an impetus to further investigations and to the evaluation of the proposed conclusions and suggestions.
