Book Scott Lithgow

Download or read book Scott Lithgow written by Lewis Johnman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work studies the history of two major Scottish shipbuilding firms based on the River Clyde - Scotts Shipbuilding and Engineering Company and Lithgows Limited. It traces each firm's origin, success, decline, and collapse, and places the events into the historical context of maritime Britain. The aim is to enhance the academic understanding of the cause and effect of the decline of the British shipbuilding industry, delving beyond the factors of poor industrial relations, international market conditions, and entrepreneurial failure in search of further answers. As a private company, Lithgows Limited provides useful insights into company management outside of state control. The authors base their analysis on the catalogued volumes of Scotts and Lithgows records, though due to the large number of gaps in the data, they also conducted interviews with major players in each company from the post-war period. Public, business, and banking records also provide supplementary material. The book is separated into eight chapters, plus a concluding ninth, an appendix listing ships built by Scott Lithgow Limited between 1970-1987, and a select bibliography.

Download or read book Oil for Britain written by Jonathan Kuiken and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period from 1957 to 1988 was transformative for the international oil industry. The United Kingdon, home to two major oil companies, British Petroleum (BP) and Shell, as well as the possessor of large quantities of oil and gas in its territorial waters, was at the heart of this transition. While famous for its liberal policy toward oil and gas production, both before and after the discovery of North Sea oil and gas, this period actually saw the United Kingdom respond to shifts in power from the major oil companies to the oil-producing states, many of them in Organization of Petroleum Exporting Companies (OPEC), by building up its competency regarding oil matters. This took the form of efforts to influence the activities of BP and Shell abroad as well as in creation of a state-run oil company, the British National Oil Corporation, in an attempt to exercise greater state control over oil and gas production and distribution. The failure of these efforts was driven in part by internal divisions within Whitehall, the efforts of the oil companies themselves, and ultimately the political will of the Conservative Party under Margaret Thatcher to get the state out of the business of oil and gas.

Book The Sea of Lost Opportunity

Download or read book The Sea of Lost Opportunity written by Norman J. Smith and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-04-13 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a contribution to the history of a vital stage of UK technical and economic development, perhaps the most important since the Second World War. It shows, from an industrial viewpoint, how the British handled the exploitation of their most significant natural resource gain of the 20th century. Notwithstanding the nearly 30 years of government support through the Offshore Supplies Office, the UK has not reaped the full benefit of the North Sea discoveries; this book attempts to explain why. It will assist governments and industries faced with future instances of unforeseen, specialist and large-scale new demand to manage their reactions more effectively. It also throws light on how governments can pursue strategic industrial objectives while leaving market mechanisms to function with minimal interference, something some administrations – perhaps even the British – may wish to do now or in the future. - Covers the entire period from the first well offshore Britain until the dismantling of the specific British industrial policy measures for offshore supplies - Based in large measure upon archives not previously accessed and the private testimony/papers of participants - 'Drills down' to the level of individual company decisions through case study and other material - The only properly researched description of how the world's first major local content initiative developed

Book The Official History of North Sea Oil and Gas

Download or read book The Official History of North Sea Oil and Gas written by Alex Kemp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 821 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by the leading expert in the history of UK energy, this study provides new, in-depth analysis of the development of UK petroleum policies towards the North Sea oil and gas industry from the early 1960s to the early 1980s. Following on from volume I (The Growing Dominance of the State) to discuss the more recent history of the North Sea oil and gas industry, here Alex Kemp offers new insights into developments in the industry. The controversial decisions to raise gas prices to consumers and to introduce the Gas Levy are discussed, while the thinking behind the gradual reduction in taxation - including the abolition of SPD (Supplementary Petroleum Duty) and the removal of royalties on new developments - is fully explained. The various options considered to reduce the powers of BNOC (British National Oil Corporation), then privatise its upstream assets, and finally to abolish the state company altogether are fully discussed, as is the thinking leading up to the privatisation of the British Gas Corporation in 1986. This volume also sheds light on the development of policies onshore, particularly the role of the OSO (Offshore Supplies Office), and the response of British industry to the North Sea opportunity. Finally, the evolution of policies relating to health, safety, decommissioning, and the environment over the whole period of the study are examined. The Official History of North Sea Oil and Gas will be of interest to students of North Sea oil and gas, energy economics, business history, and British politics, as well as to petroleum professionals and policymakers.

Book Halogenated Hydrocarbons and Alcohols

Download or read book Halogenated Hydrocarbons and Alcohols written by Gerard Meurant and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Mineral Supplies: Assessment and Perspective examines some of the issues in the debate about whether there is an impending global shortage of mineral resources and whether technology and exploration can meet the needs of a rapidly growing rate of mineral consumption in the world. The geologic and economic factors that determine the demand for and the availability and distribution of mineral resources and reserves are discussed, and the future of mineral resource supplies is considered. Comprised of 14 chapters, this volume places emphasis on the technical problems of assuring adequate mineral supplies for the future. The discussion begins by analyzing the complexities and confusion that color much of the discussion about the size and adequacy of world mineral supplies, focusing on the importance of distinguishing between "resources" and "reserves". The next chapter deals with the creation of reserves from resources as a function of price, cost, ore grade, and technology. Subsequent chapters explore the physical and chemical factors that determine the absolute abundance and the actual availability and distribution of resources; the actual geographic distribution among countries of mineral supply and demand; and trends in energy consumption and supply. Conservation of minerals and of the environment and mineral exploration and technical cooperation in developing countries are also treated in considerable detail, along with deep mining techniques and UNDP-assisted projects in geology and mineral resources. This book will be of interest to economists, social scientists, geologists, mining engineers, and mineral technologists.

Book Local Content Oil and Gas Law in Africa

Download or read book Local Content Oil and Gas Law in Africa written by Pereowei Subai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining local content law and policy in the oil and gas industry, this book uses Nigeria as a primary case study, comparing its approach to countries such as Brazil and Norway which have also adopted local content laws in relation to their gas and oil industries. In considering various aspects of local content law and policy as they apply to the oil and gas industry, the book examines the factors behind the formulation of local content policies by petroleum producing states, and the various strategies they have employed to implement them. It analyses arguments against local content requirements from the perspective of international trade and investment law, and from liberal market economic theorists, who argue against its overall usefulness. The book highlights salient aspects of the oil and gas industry such as regulation, national oil companies, treatment of minorities, and policy formulation and implementation.
