Download or read book Care Without Coverage written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans believe that people who lack health insurance somehow get the care they really need. Care Without Coverage examines the real consequences for adults who lack health insurance. The study presents findings in the areas of prevention and screening, cancer, chronic illness, hospital-based care, and general health status. The committee looked at the consequences of being uninsured for people suffering from cancer, diabetes, HIV infection and AIDS, heart and kidney disease, mental illness, traumatic injuries, and heart attacks. It focused on the roughly 30 million-one in seven-working-age Americans without health insurance. This group does not include the population over 65 that is covered by Medicare or the nearly 10 million children who are uninsured in this country. The main findings of the report are that working-age Americans without health insurance are more likely to receive too little medical care and receive it too late; be sicker and die sooner; and receive poorer care when they are in the hospital, even for acute situations like a motor vehicle crash.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decade ahead will test the nation's nearly 4 million nurses in new and complex ways. Nurses live and work at the intersection of health, education, and communities. Nurses work in a wide array of settings and practice at a range of professional levels. They are often the first and most frequent line of contact with people of all backgrounds and experiences seeking care and they represent the largest of the health care professions. A nation cannot fully thrive until everyone - no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they make - can live their healthiest possible life, and helping people live their healthiest life is and has always been the essential role of nurses. Nurses have a critical role to play in achieving the goal of health equity, but they need robust education, supportive work environments, and autonomy. Accordingly, at the request of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, on behalf of the National Academy of Medicine, an ad hoc committee under the auspices of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine conducted a study aimed at envisioning and charting a path forward for the nursing profession to help reduce inequities in people's ability to achieve their full health potential. The ultimate goal is the achievement of health equity in the United States built on strengthened nursing capacity and expertise. By leveraging these attributes, nursing will help to create and contribute comprehensively to equitable public health and health care systems that are designed to work for everyone. The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity explores how nurses can work to reduce health disparities and promote equity, while keeping costs at bay, utilizing technology, and maintaining patient and family-focused care into 2030. This work builds on the foundation set out by The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health (2011) report.

Book Fixing Medical Prices

    Book Details:
  • Author : Miriam J. Laugesen
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2016-11-21
  • ISBN : 0674545370
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Fixing Medical Prices written by Miriam J. Laugesen and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical care prices in the United States are not only the most expensive in the world, but there are wide variations in what physicians are paid. Doctors at the frontlines of medical care who manage complex conditions argue that they receive disproportionately lower fees than physicians performing services such as minor surgeries and endoscopies. Fixing Medical Prices goes to the heart of the U.S. medical pricing process: to a largely unknown yet influential committee of medical organizations affiliated with the American Medical Association that advises Medicare. Medicare’s ready acceptance of this committee’s recommendations typically sets off a chain reaction across the entire American health care system. For decades, the U.S. policymaking structure for pricing has reflected the influence of physician organizations. What Miriam Laugesen’s rich analysis shows is how these organizations navigate the arcane and complex work of this advisory committee. Contradicting the story of a profession in political decline, Fixing Medical Prices demonstrates that the power of physician organizations has simply become more subtle. Laugesen’s investigation into the exorbitant cost of American medical care will be of interest to those who follow the politics of health care policy, the influence of interest groups on rate setting, and the medical profession’s past and future role in our health care system.

Book Paying the Doctor

Download or read book Paying the Doctor written by Jonathan D. Moreno and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it does not seem unusual to us that professionals be compensated for the product or service they provide, there are some professions that make us feel uncomfortable with the necessity of payment. Paying the Doctor explores this dilemma as it relates to the health care field. It analyzes and explains the roles of the health care provider, patient, and market influences in cost and reimbursement. Part introductions to each section familiarize the reader with the specific concerns it contains, and an overall conclusion describes the major points of a planned future payment system. The goal of this volume was to create a book that was general enough to serve as an introduction for members of the health care field and sophisticated enough to appeal also to researchers. To achieve this, editor Jonathan Moreno enlists the aid of a diverse group of professionals: health care providers, economists, historians, philosophers, and others. They begin by providing a series of studies that describe and apply various frameworks for analyzing physician payment, the first of which shows exactly what an enormous challenge the entire subject of reimbursement poses. The following section studies various payment mechanisms. Successive sections study specific professional groups and the Medicare system. Based on this information, a new payment system expected to be introduced within a few years is discussed.
