Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Runner-up, 2019 Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Book Award, sponsored by the Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Association (TOMFRA) Despite the strategic importance of the Lower Rio Grande Valley during the Civil War, the two battles fought there—the first (September 1864) and the second (May 1865) battles of Palmito Ranch—have largely faded from public memory even as the second battle earned the title “Last Land Battle of the Civil War.” In Palmito Ranch: From Civil War Battlefield to National Historic Landmark, Jody Edward Ginn and William Alexander McWhorter document efforts to redress this lacuna in the popular consciousness. They offer new information about these battles while chronicling the efforts to save and preserve the battlefield site, one of the few places in Texas where the war was contested. Opening with a crisp retelling of the principal military events that unfolded at Palmito Ranch, near the Confederate port city of Brownsville, Ginn and McWhorter recount the initiative pursued by a multidisciplinary team organized largely through the efforts of the Texas Historical Commission to study, document, and preserve this important Texas historic site. Now, visitors to the area may benefit from not only improved and expanded historical markers, but also a radio transmitter and a viewing platform, along with other interpretive aids. All this is due to the campaign spearheaded by McWhorter, Ginn, and a cohort of dedicated volunteers and professionals. Providing a case study in constituency building and public awareness raising to preserve and promote historic sites, Palmito Ranch will interest and educate heritage tourists, Civil War enthusiasts, and travelers to South Texas and the Lower Rio Grande Valley.

Book On the Prairie of Palo Alto

Download or read book On the Prairie of Palo Alto written by Charles M. Haecker and published by TAMU Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Palo Alto marked several firsts in American history: a new generation of professional soldiers--Ulysses S. Grant, George G. Meade, and James Longstreet--provided a wealth of expert knowledge to their senior officers; the military demonstrated the superior qualities of their newly introduced "flying" artillery, one that would see fruition during the far greater epoch of the Civil War; and graduates of the U.S. Military Academy experienced their first major test. The battle was essentially an artillery duel that pitted highly effective U.S. cannon against Mexican cannon of antiquated design. The Americans rapidly deployed at will two field batteries, each consisting of six- and twelve-pounder guns and howitzers. Two eighteen-pounder siege guns, periodically hauled forward by teams of oxen, contributed to the decimation of the Mexican infantry. In contrast, Mexican four- and eight-pounder guns lacked the maneuverability and range needed to check their aggressive adversary. Although the Mexicans attempted flanking and frontal attacks on the U.S. lines, they were repulsed with heavy losses. Unable to maneuver, and confused and bloodied after standing all day under artillery fire, the Mexicans withdrew. In On the Prairie of Palo Alto, Charles M. Haecker and Jeffrey G. Mauck use an interdisciplinary approach, combining research of a historian with that of a historical archaeologist, to present an accurate version of how the battle developed and concluded. By reviewing historical accounts of the battle, comparing and contrasting both Mexican and U.S. documents pertaining to the battle, analyzing contemporary battlefield maps, and examining relevant areas of the battlefield site itself, the authors have determined that several significant differences between the American and Mexican versions of battle events and that the American version more closely approximates the truth. Military historians and U.S.-Mexican War enthusiasts will find this analysis of the actual conduct of the battle interesting and insightful.

Book Papers of the Second Palo Alto Conference

Download or read book Papers of the Second Palo Alto Conference written by Harriet Denise Joseph and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers of the Second Palo Alto Conference: A Conference on the War Between Mexico and the United States, Its Causes, and Its Consequences With Participants From the United States and Mexico; Brownsville, Texas, February 11-12, 1994 On May 8, 1993, formal ceremonies were held to dedicate the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site. The law that created the park contained a far-reaching mandate to study the causes and consequences of the Battle of Palo Alto and the mexican-american War. Interpretations were to' reflect sources from and perspectives of both the United States and Mexico. Consequently, amid the pomp and celebration surrounding the successful establishment of the National Park Service site, Palo Alto began operations with a small gathering of researchers and scholars in a round-table event that became known as the Palo Alto Conference. Dealing with a war that continues to evoke strong feelings despite the passage of time, this conference emerged as an opportunity to bring together citizens of the two nations, to create a dialogue among them, and to establish a foundation for future park activities. Positive reaction to the 1993 conclave led to the decision to reconvene on an annual basis. In an effort to broaden the base of participation, Palo Alto personnel joined with Social Science faculty at the University of Texas at Brownsville to plan a second binational conference scheduled for February 1994 in that city. Affiliation with the university changed the format of the conference from a round-table approach to a series of thematic sessions. Keynote speaker Josefina Zoraida Vazquez of El Colegio de México highlighted an expanded list of diverse participants. Emphasis at the Second Annual Palo Alto Conference continued to be on establishing lines of communication between citizens of the United States and Mexico on the controversial mexican-american War. The planning committee encouraged the participation of established professionals, beginning scholars, military officers, trained archivists, and subject-area enthusiasts-including many who might not normally attend this type of academic forum. The call for papers in English or Spanish was open to anyone interested in the subject area, and screening of proposals was kept to a minimum. The volume of papers presented at the bilingual conference reflected this spirit of widespread participation. Download or read book The Civil War on the Rio Grande 1846 1876 written by Roseann Bacha-Garza and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020, Texas Historical Commission's Governor's Award for Historic Preservation was awarded to the Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. This book grew out of the CHAPS program. Runner-up, 2019 Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Book Award, sponsored by the Texas Old Missions and Forts Restoration Association (TOMFRA) Long known as a place of cross-border intrigue, the Rio Grande’s unique role in the history of the American Civil War has been largely forgotten or overlooked. Few know of the dramatic events that took place here or the complex history of ethnic tensions and international intrigue and the clash of colorful characters that marked the unfolding and aftermath of the Civil War in the Lone Star State. To understand the American Civil War in Texas also requires an understanding of the history of Mexico. The Civil War on the Rio Grande focuses on the region’s forced annexation from Mexico in 1848 through the Civil War and Reconstruction. In a very real sense, the Lower Rio Grande Valley was a microcosm not only of the United States but also of increasing globalization as revealed by the intersections of races, cultures, economic forces, historical dynamics, and individual destinies. As a companion to Blue and Gray on the Border: The Rio Grande Valley Civil War Trail, this volume provides the scholarly backbone to a larger public history project exploring three decades of ethnic conflict, shifting international alliances, and competing economic proxies at the border. The Civil War on the Rio Grande, 1846–1876 makes a groundbreaking contribution not only to the history of a Texas region in transition but also to the larger history of a nation at war with itself.
