Book U S Supersonic Commercial Aircraft

Download or read book U S Supersonic Commercial Aircraft written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-08-25 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is currently developing advanced technologies to form the foundation for the next breakthrough in civil aviation: an economically viable, environmentally acceptable supersonic transport. NASA's High Speed Research Program works in conjunction with industry to identify and address critical technological challenges to initiating commercial development of a practical supersonic transport. The key technical areas investigated are engine emissions, fuel efficiency, service life, and weight; community noise; aircraft range and payload; and weight and service life of airframe structures. Areas of particular interest include the ability of technologies under development to meet program goals related to noise, emissions, service life, weight, range, and payload. This book examines aircraft design requirements, assesses the program's planning and progress, and recommends changes that will help the program achieve its overall objectives.

Book A Study of Facilities and Fixtures for Testing of a High Speed Civil Transport Wing Component

Download or read book A Study of Facilities and Fixtures for Testing of a High Speed Civil Transport Wing Component written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was performed to determine the feasibility of testing a large-scale High Speed Civil Transport wing component in the Structures and Materials Testing Laboratory in Building 1148 at NASA Langley Research Center. The report includes a survey of the electrical and hydraulic resources and identifies the backing structure and floor hard points which would be available for reacting the test loads. The backing structure analysis uses a new finite element model of the floor and backstop support system in the Structures Laboratory. Information on the data acquisition system and the thermal power requirements is also presented. The study identified the hardware that would be required to test a typical component, including the number and arrangement of hydraulic actuators required to simulate expected flight loads. Load introduction and reaction structure concepts were analyzed to investigate the effects of experimentally induced boundary conditions. Cerro, J. A. and Vause, R. F. and Bowman, L. Book The 1990 High Speed Civil Transport Studies Summary Report

Download or read book The 1990 High Speed Civil Transport Studies Summary Report written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains the results of the Douglas Aircraft Company system studies related to High-Speed Civil Transports (HSCT's). The tasks were performed under an 18-month extension of NASA Langley Research Center Contract NAS1-18378. The system studies were conducted to assess the emission impact of HSCT's at design Mach numbers ranging from 1.6 to 3.2. In particular, engine cycles were assessed regarding community noise and atmospheric emissions impact, and a HSCT route structure was developed. The general results indicated the following: (1) in the Mach number range 1.6 to 2.5, the development of polymer composite and discontinuous reinforced alumnium materials is essential to ensure a minimum operational weight; (2) the HSCT route structure to minimize supersonic overland can be increased by innovative routing to avoid land masses; (3) at least two engine concepts show promise in achieving sideline stage 3 noise limits; (4) two promising low-NO(x) combustor concepts were identified; (5) the atmospheric emission impact on ozone could be significantly lower for Mach 1.6 operations than for Mach 3.2 operations; and (6) sonic boom minimization concepts are maturing at an encouraging rate. Book Technology Benefits and Ground Test Facilities for High Speed Civil Transport Development

Download or read book Technology Benefits and Ground Test Facilities for High Speed Civil Transport Development written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-12 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advanced technology base necessary for successful twenty-first century High-Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) aircraft will require extensive ground testing in aerodynamics, propulsion, acoustics, structures, materials, and other disciplines. This paper analyzes the benefits of advanced technology application to HSCT concepts, addresses the adequacy of existing groundbased test facilities, and explores the need for new facilities required to support HSCT development. A substantial amount of HSCT-related ground testing can be accomplished in existing facilities. The HSCT development effort could also benefit significantly from some new facilities initially conceived for testing in other aeronautical research areas. A new structures testing facility is identified as critically needed to insure timely technology maturation.
