Book Evaluating Acquisitions and Collection Management

Download or read book Evaluating Acquisitions and Collection Management written by Linda S Katz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is an in-depth book on the process of evaluating your acquisitions and collection management programs. No project, no matter how ingenious or innovative, will be granted support by a funding agency without a solid evaluation plan. Evaluating Acquisitions and Collection Management discusses the reasons evaluation is held in such high regard by administrators. The authors describe a variety of evaluation activities that cover both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The first section of the book covers current trends and the impact on collection development and acquisitions, and how the evaluation of collections can reveal patterns of program support that can then be compared between peer institutions. Other topics include the process of assigning relative value to acquisitions activities, performance appraisal, and methods for improving procedures of acquiring materials. Acquisitions librarians and administrators will find this book extremely helpful in streamlining their acquisitions and collection management programs.

Book Acquisitions Budgets and Material Costs

Download or read book Acquisitions Budgets and Material Costs written by Sul H Lee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In times of tight materials budgets, steeply rising prices, and rapidly expanding information formats, library professionals will appreciate the valuable insights into acquisitions processes and management of material costs that are offered in this practical new book. Respected librarians and vendor representatives contributed to this volume--the published proceedings of a recent conference held at the University of Oklahoma. These experts examine approval plans, including a new approach for the publisher-based plan; the impact of inflation, including the increasing costs of titles in selected subject disciplines, causes for the costs, and ramifications for libraries and suppliers; and the process of materials budgeting from the collection of data to the justification of the budget. With increasing demands on librarians to find better budget management strategies and to develop more effective material acquisition processes, an environment has evolved in which librarians and book vendors are forced to examine their methods of acquiring and supplying materials to libraries. Acquisitions, Budgets, and Material Costs: Issues and Approaches provides librarians with readily applicable solutions to today’s acquisition problems.

Book Vendors and Library Acquisitions

Download or read book Vendors and Library Acquisitions written by William A. Katz and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vendors and Library Acquisitions is an enlightening book that addresses the sometimes troublesome relationships between acquisitions librarians and the jobbers with whom they work. Various issues are explored to establish the most efficient and satisfactory methods of selecting a vendor, the way to gain expertise in evaluating the system, and the best ways to reach a successful relationship with the vendor and the public served by the library. The book is divided into three sections, the first of which discusses the selection and evaluation of a vendor, from the vendors's point of view. The chapters in this section cover what a vendor can do, should do, and should not be expected to do. The new technologies are also mentioned, with attention paid to the ways in which they have made the job of the vendor both easier and more difficult. The second section looks at vendor selection and evaluation from the librarians’perspective. Among the topics discussed are: making sure all orders get filled, obtaining material for numerous language groups, containing serials costs, and handling approval plans. Part Three, “Approval Plans and Vendors,” is a study of the similarities that are shared between approval plans, vendors, and librarians. Detailed instructions are given on what and what not to do when setting up an acquisitions program based on approval plans. Non book types of materials are also discussed, which are currently of great interest to many libraries. This practical book will be of great assistance to anyone working with serials and/or books and vendors.

Book Transforming Acquisitions and Collection Services

Download or read book Transforming Acquisitions and Collection Services written by Michelle Flinchbaugh and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores ways in which libraries can reach new levels of service, quality, and efficiency while minimizing cost by collaborating in acquisitions. In consortial acquisitions, a number of libraries work together, usually in an existing library consortia, to leverage size to support acquisitions in each individual library. In cross-functional acquisitions, acquisitions collaborates to support other library functions. For the library acquisitions manager, technical services manager, or the library director, awareness of different options for effective consortial and cross-functional acquisitions allows for the optimization of staff and resources to reach goals. This work presents those options in the form of case studies as well as useful analysis of the benefits and challenges of each. By supporting each other’s acquisitions services in a consortium, libraries leverage size to get better prices, and share systems and expertise to maximize resources while minimizing costs. Within libraries, the acquisitions function can be combined with other library functions in a unit with more than one purpose, or acquisitions can develop a close working relationship with another unit to support their work. This book surveys practice at different libraries and at different library consortia, and presents a detailed description and analysis of a variety of practices for how acquisitions units support each other within a consortium, and how they work with other library units, specifically collection management, cataloging, interlibrary loan, and the digital repository, in the form of case studies. A final section of the book covers fundamentals of collaboration.
