In the summer of 1823, I was a member of the Ohio University, and left that Institution, expect ing to return to college to pursue my studies, in the winter; but circumstances, unnecessary for me to state, prevented me from joining my class at that time, and l was induced to seek, in the western part of the state, a person with whom I could prosecute my studies during the winter season. I heard of a competent teacher in Warren county. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of George Washington It is well known that Mr. Jared Sparks has for many years been occupied in collecting materials, both in Europe and America, for his Life and Writings of Washington. "I have endeavoured," he observes, in his Preface to the former, "to follow closely the order of time, adopting the plan of a personal narrative, and introducing collateral events no farther than was absolutely necessary to give completeness to the design. After the able, accurate, and comprehensive work of Chief Justice Marshall, it would be presumptuous to attempt an historical biography of Washington. Yet it must be kept in mind that much the larger portion of his life was passed on a conspicuous public theatre, and that no account of it can be written which will not assume essentially the air of history. Anecdotes are interwoven and such incidents of a private and personal nature as are known; but it must be confessed that these are more rare than could be desired. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical and Archeological Study of the George Washington Memorial Parkway: Arlington County, Virginia Cheek, Friedlander, and Warnock note that known archeological sites in the_ area tend to be concentrated on flat - top knolls immediately over looking the Potomac while smaller prehistoric sites are found in the narrow stream valley. Bearing this, and the above data, in mind, the discussion of the known prehistoric sites will begin with those found within the confines of or immediately adjacent to the Roosevelt Bridge to Spout Run study area. It should be reiterated at the outset, however, that although Arlington is one of the smallest counties in the United States in terms of square miles, it has only twenty - five archeological sites recorded with the State of Virginia. This paucity of known sites is not without Significance; indeed, it reinforces their individual and collective importance and underscores the need for archeological studies within the county. Discussion will proceed from tri upriver to Spout Run. An overview of sites found within the greater study area, from the Fourteenth Street Bridge to Chain Bridge, will follow.
