Book excerpt: Also, because the storage capacity of memory and disks has increased 50 to 100 times in the past ten years, there is good reason to question whether the results of previous studies are valid for today's systems. Although the distributed UNIX-based system we trace in this study is vastly different than the large time-sharing systems used in previous studies, we find that some of the same types of migration algorithms still perform well. Specifically, file replacement algorithms based on multiplying the file size by the time since last access to obtain an ordering of migration preference between files work well."

Book Selected Topics in Migration Studies

Download or read book Selected Topics in Migration Studies written by Frank D. Bean and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-02 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a collection of key papers about migration, focusing on multiple aspects of international and internal migration in various times and places. Because migration has been such an important part of global peopling, the book contains synopses of major geographic movements from ancient and early history as well as the present. It includes material from anthropology, archaeology, criminology, demography, economics, ethnic studies, geography, health sciences, history, law, public policy, political science, psychology, and sociology. By providing a treatment of migration that is multifaceted, comparative, and multi-disciplinary, it offers not only a basis for conceptualizing broad features of migration and their changes, but also one for discerning the formal and informal policy auspices that have influenced migration. The book thus constitutes a significant resource for students, teachers, practitioners, scholars, and researchers interested in or working on aspects of migration in any field. It should be particularly useful for people seeking information and knowledge about migration from fields other than their own.

Book An Anthology of Migration and Social Transformation

Download or read book An Anthology of Migration and Social Transformation written by Anna Amelina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions of this book examine contemporary dynamics of migration and mobility in the context of the general societal transformations that have taken place in Europe over the past few decades. The book will help readers to better understand the manifold ways in which migration trends in the region are linked to changing political-economic constellations, orders of power and inequality, and political discourses. It begins with an introduction to a number of theoretical approaches that address the nexus between migration and general societal shifts, including processes of supranationalisation, EU enlargement, postsocialist transformations and rescaling. It then provides a comprehensive overview of the political regulation of migration through border control and immigration policies. The contributions that follow detail the dynamic changes of individual migration patterns and their implications for the agency of mobile individuals. The final part challenges the reader to consider how policies and practices of migration are linked to symbolic struggles over belonging and rights, describing a wide range of expressions of such conflicts, from cosmopolitanism to racism and xenophobia. This book is aimed at researchers in various fields of the social sciences and can be used as course reading for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate courses in the areas of international migration, transnational and European studies. It will be a beneficial resource for scholars looking for material on the most current conceptual tools for analysis of the nexus of migration and societal transformation in Europe.
