Download or read book Study of Enhancement of Properties of Antenna and Design of High Gain Patch Antenna Using Metamaterial written by Tejas Dudhane and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work focuses on the analysis and design of microstrip patch antennas (MPA) and enhancement of properties like gain, directivity and return loss using metamaterial superstrate. Microstrip antennas are preferred because of their compatibility to fit in aircrafts, mobiles, and satellites because of the small sizes. So, it is the need of the hour to develop effective and superior microstrip patch antenna. In this report, we present the design of rectangular microstrip patch antenna incorporated with innovative metamaterial structure for dual band operation at 2.478 GHz and 2.919 GHz. Simulations are performed using CST Studio Suite. The simulation results confirm that when incorporated with metamaterial structure the patch antenna achieves better return loss. Also, in this work, the gain of the patch antenna operating at 2.55 GHz is improved when the metamaterial composed of ring aperture lattice (9 x 9) was placed at a distance'd' from the ground plane. The improvement in gain and directivity is also marked. The designed structures are characterized using CST Studio Suite at variable frequencies, dielectrics and substrate thicknesses

Book Optimizing Antenna Gain with a Metamaterial Filter

Download or read book Optimizing Antenna Gain with a Metamaterial Filter written by Julian Baker and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metamaterials are man-made structures, usually designed by placing electromagnetic resonators, such as split ring resonators (SRRs), in a periodic array. Metamaterials also exhibit lensing properties, and, when placed next to antennas, are known to improve the gain of the antenna. For high power antennas, the placement of metamaterials with embedded metallic resonators, however, may lead to excessive heating effects and alternative solutions need to be developed. In this research work, a metamaterial lens constructed from cubic high dielectric resonators (CHDR) embedded in a low dielectric slab was placed in front of a circular patch and a fractal patch antenna respectively, in order to characterize the effects on the antenna parameters, specifically the gain, as a result of the antenna and lens coupling. The CHDR based metamaterial lens was designed to have a negative refractive index at 10.4 GHz, which was determined through the extraction of the constitutive parameters from the s-parameters. The optimum distance of lens placement was then determined in order to maximize the antenna gain for both cases. Heating effects at high power were also demonstrated through a comparison of the CHDR based metamaterial with a SRR based structure. A methodology for optimizing the metamaterial lens design is also presented, which is based on the Drude dispersion model applied to a homogeneous metamaterial. The model determines the optimum placement and geometry of the metamaterial lens in order to maximize antenna gain for a source radiating spherical electromagnetic waves. Finally, in order to demonstrate the advantages of a CHDR based metamaterial lens over a metallic split-ring resonator (SRR) based lens, for high power applications, the structures were subjected to electromagnetic radiation and their thermal properties were studied. All simulations were performed using CST microwave studio (a commercially available electromagnetic software suite). The optimum placement of the metamaterial slab in front of the circular patch antenna and the fractal patch antenna for maximum gain enhancement was determined to be 14 mm, and 18 mm respectively. The gain improvement for the circular patch antenna was from 7.380 dB to 11.75 dB, and the gain improvement for the fractal patch antenna was from 8.980 dB to 12.28 dB. In a separate but related study, a metamaterial lens was designed and analyzed through the Drude formulation and a concept to improve the directivity of an antenna through a special metamaterial lens design was presented. The main purpose of using the Drude model is to allow a user of CST Microwave Studio to indirectly set the values of the permittivity and permeability (i.e. the refractive index and absorption) at a given frequency, which are then used by the program to calculate the electromagnetic fields in time and space. A homogenous metamaterial lens was analyzed through the Drude formulation, it was shown that if the source is radiating a spherical wave, the geometry of the metamaterial lens should be flat on the side in which the wave is entering and parabolic on the side of the lens that the wave is exiting. In addition, the optimum distance away from the source was determined to be equal to the thickness of the rectangular portion of the metamaterial lens. Finally, in the lens heating study using SRR and CHDR resonators, it was found that for a power factor of 65W and a background temperature of 300 K, an SRR based lens has a maximum temperature of 1676.0 K, while the CHDR lens has a maximum temperature of 300.16 K, demonstrating that the CHDR based lens is the preferred metamaterial type for high power applications. For compact high power applications requiring high gain antennas without significant heating problems, a coupling of CHDR based metamaterials and a fractal or patch antenna is a preferable and a viable candidate.

Book Metamaterials and Metasurfaces

Download or read book Metamaterials and Metasurfaces written by Josep Canet-Ferrer and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metamaterials have provided applications in spectral ranges covering radio frequencies and ultraviolet. However, most applications have been extrapolated to the visible or near-infrared after being developed at the GHz level. This is due to technological reasons since fabrication of microwave antennas is not as demanding as THz resonators or plasmonic nanostructures. Accordingly, this book has been divided into three parts. In the first part, fundamentals of metamaterials and metadevices are discussed, while describing recent advances in the field. In the second part, the discussion is extended to the different spectral ranges focusing on the strategies for enabling the reconfigurability of metadevices. Given the increasing interest in THz applications, these can be found in the third part.

Book Performance Improvement of Dense Dielectric Patch Antenna Using Partially Reflective Surfaces

Download or read book Performance Improvement of Dense Dielectric Patch Antenna Using Partially Reflective Surfaces written by Muftah Mohamed Asaadi and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, millimeter-wave (MMW) band is being considered as the spectrum for future wireless communication systems. Several advantages are achieved by utilizing the millimeter-wave range, including high gain with large available bandwidth, compact size, and high security. Nevertheless, attenuation loss may restrict wireless communication systems' transmission range. Meanwhile, printed antenna technology has gained the attention of antenna designers' due to its low profile and ease of fabrication. High-gain antennas are very desirable as a critical part of MMW systems. Designing millimeter wave antennas with high gain characteristics would be a significant advantage due to their high sensitivity to atmospheric absorption losses. Moreover, planar configurations are required in many applications, such as for wireless communication. The main goal of this thesis is to design and propose state of the art designs of Fabry Pérot Cavity antenna (FPCA) designs with several types of superstrates to achieve high gain, wide bandwidth, and high efficiency to satisfy the requirements of today's advanced wireless communication systems. A dense dielectric patch (DD) antenna is used as the main radiator and designed to operate at 28 GHz. The thesis presents several contributions related to the design and analysis of FPC antennas using several types of superstrates. The first research theme of this thesis has two parts. The first part presents a holey dielectric superstrate applied over a 2×2 dense dielectric square patch antenna array to enhance the gain, improve the bandwidth and efficiency, as well as to reduce the side lobe levels (SLLs). A dense dielectric patch replaces the metallic patch and is used as a radiated element. The measured results show a high gain of 16 dBi, with radiation efficiency of about 93 %, wide bandwidth of 15.3 %, and a reduced SLL. The second part focusses on a partially reflective surface (PRS) unit cell composed of two thin perforated dielectric slabs. The effect of the thicknesses of the unit cell dielectric slabs is discussed in detail. An array of the proposed PRS unit cell is applied over a dense dielectric square patch antenna array to broaden the bandwidth and to enhance the gain as well. The measured results exhibit a 3 dB gain bandwidth of 27 % with a high gain of 16.8 dBi. The second research theme presents an effective method to design a tapered superstrate of an FPC antenna with a DD patch element. This type of superstrate is designed to correct the phase above the superstrate to be almost uniform. The proposed single-layer perforated tapered superstrate is constructed by tapering the relative permittivity to be high in the center of the superstrate slab and then decrease gradually as it moves towards the edges. This tapered relative permittivity is then applied over a single DD patch antenna. The proposed antenna exhibits good performance in terms of the antenna gain and bandwidth. The antenna gain becomes flat and as high as 17.6 dBi. The antenna bandwidth is about 16 %, and the side lobe level of the antenna is very promising. A third theme presents the implementation and design of a high gain dense dielectric patch antenna integrated with a frequency-selective surface (FSS) superstrate. A 7×7-unit cell is used to build the superstrate layer, and applied above the high DD patch antenna. A modified unit cell is proposed to generate a positive reflection phase with high reflection magnitude within the frequency design in order to broaden the antenna bandwidth. A bandwidth of 15.3 % with a high gain of 16 dBi is obtained. Finally, a high gain linearly polarized (LP) substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity antenna based on a high-order mode is implemented, fabricated, and tested. A TE440 mode is excited at 28 GHz. In this design, 4×4 slots are cut into the top metal of the cavity, where each slot is placed above each standing wave peak. These slot cuts contributed to a high gain of 16.4 dBi and radiation efficiency of about 96 %. The LP SIW cavity antenna was then integrated with a linear-to-circular polarization converter developed as a high gain circularly polarized (CP) SIW cavity antenna with high gain and high radiation efficiency of 16 dBi and 96 %, respectively.

Book Advances in Antenna Engineering and Wireless Systems Research

Download or read book Advances in Antenna Engineering and Wireless Systems Research written by Haider Raad and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a major duty of researchers to keep up with the advances in engineering and technology that occur almost daily. United Scholars Publications has recognized this duty and designed a book series that provide scientists, engineers, educators, and researches in this vital field with the cutting edge developments and to disseminate it globally. This book, organized into eight chapters, features scientists from around the globe contributing diverse topics in mostly antenna theory and engineering. The book aims at highlighting the state of the art research and recent findings in new technologies and designs, and bridging theoretical research with applications. This collection will be of significant value to academic researchers, graduate students as well as practicing engineers working in this vibrant field. Chapter One presents an optimized design procedure of a slot-coupled cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna. The technique exploits an equivalent circuit of the resonating antenna to significantly reduce the number of full-wave EM simulations. The target values of the equivalent circuit elements are determined from the desired specifications such as bandwidth, center frequency and in-band return loss level. Chapter Two proposes novel broadband single-layered microstrip elements for dual-polarized reflectarray. The structure of the proposed elements has four-axial symmetry in the unit cell, which can achieve low cross-polarization property. These elements can lead to a linear phase curves with almost the same slop characteristics for the frequency, thereby achieving the desirable reflection phase over the wide frequency range. Chapter Three presents an optimization study of a patch-fed dielectric rod antenna design at millimeter wave band. The proposed design is composed of simple dielectric rod antenna made of low cost Teflon with relative permittivity of 2.1 that is fed by a rectangular patch antenna. Compared to the conventionally used tapered dielectric rod antennas, this configuration is capable of producing higher gain for a given antenna length. Chapter Four presents a new type of mobile handset PIFA antenna design to reduce the specific absorption rate (SAR) in human head. PIFA antenna structures operating at 1.8 GHz are considered. Current density in human head is decreased by reducing the near electric field radiation coming from the radiating antenna to the human head, which in turns leads to a reduction in SAR. This SAR reduction is accomplished by inserting several edges at each corner in the ground plane. Chapter Five examines genetic algorithm optimizer in antenna design. Specifically, the authors design and optimize the Yagi-Uda using Genetic Algorithm (GA) optimizer for digital terrestrial television (DTT) reception. The results show enhanced antenna performance as compared to current conventional antennas available in the market. Chapter Six investigates the effects of uncut and cut single rectangular spiral metamaterial unit cells on the performance of a microstrip antenna. Chapter Seven demonstrates a variety of Defected Ground Structure (DGS) to suppress cross-polarization in H-plane for rectangular and circular patch. It also shows the importance of DGS in impedance bandwidth broadening. Furthermore, the DGS used for suppression in cross-polarization, improves the co- polar radiation in the E-plane for the same antenna. Hence, the proposed DGS can be used for both purposes and can be applied to array elements. Thus, the functional properties showed significant enhancement with the application DGS. Chapter Eight analyzes Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system and the effect of varying the cyclic prefix length on OFDM System over different channel models. The simulations were carried out over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN), Rayleigh fading channels, standard wireless channel models, and the results have been compared with the theoretical ones.
