Book Factors Influencing the Dissolved Oxygen Balance in Subarctic Streams During Winter Conditions

This book was released on 1975 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Appearance and odors of putrefaction, blackening of water, destruction of major fish life and green plant life and most of the miscellaneous effects associated with gross stream pollution result from the utilization of the stream's oxygen reserve. Extensive studies have been made to date regarding the factors influencing the dissolved oxygen in streams. Unfortunately, the majority of the published reports and present theories have evolved from studies made in more temperate climates. Although the general factors which affect the oxygen balance in temperate climates also exist in subarctic climates the variation in magnitude and effect of these factors results in a unique situation. The simultaneous action of the many oxygen exchange processes often makes separation and study of individual contributing effects difficult under natural conditions. Knowledge of all factors affecting the oxygen balance must, therefore, be evaluated in order to determine which factors predominate in any given situation. In this regard a review was made of existing literature to ascertain current knowledge and techniques concerning factors contributing to the dissolved oxygen regime. A comparison of this was then made to existing information and techniques used in studies on subarctic streams. Finally, an evaluation was made to distinguish and characterize basic differences in the oxygen balance of subarctic streams, particularly during winter conditions. The review and evaluation resulted in several observations. The effects of photosynthesis are generally regarded as negligible during winter conditions in sub-arctic streams. Runoff is also minimal. Significant oxygen demands can be exerted at low temperatures. Discrepancies between the rate of removal of BOD and DO consumption indicate that respiration by aquatic organisms, reduced flows and sedimentation and/or biological extraction are contributing factors. Nitrification during periods of ice cover is not significant. Reaeration in open water stretches can be substantial depending upon the hydrodynamic effects of various ice forms among other things. The addition of oxygen demanding substances to ice-covered streams where the dissolved oxygen concentration is already at a critical level may easily result in anoxic conditions"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: " Given the growing environmental stressors associated with urbanization and climate change coupled with the need for high-resolution modeling of key parameters in flowing waters, I conducted a study to generate fine-scale, spatially-explicit data of dissolved oxygen (DO) dynamics in two stream reaches in southwestern Pennsylvania: Nine Mile Run (NMR) an ecosystem degraded by urbanization, and Montour Run (MR), a less-impacted rural reference. Data were collected during summer when DO is most variable and episodically low. Study objectives were to 1) compare patterns of spatial heterogeneity between the streams, 2) statistically assess DO measures of central tendency and variability to instream habitat features, 3) develop geographic information systems (GIS) of DO within the study reaches, and 4) compare DO patterns over time between streams. Habitat features were assessed with linear regression to determine best models for predicting DO coefficient of variation (cv), means, and minima at sampling points. I found NMR to be statistically significantly more variable in DO than MR over both space and time. At NMR, all DO measures were predicted by canopy cover, velocity, and inversely by stagnant pool categorization. Additionally, depth predicted cv and fine-grain sediment habitat was negatively associated with DO means at this site. At MR, riffle predicted cv, and velocity predicted minima, whereas canopy inversely predicted means and minima. Results may guide urban stream ecosystem management to keep DO levels at high enough levels to support aquatic life. Key words: dissolved oxygen, geographic interpolation, urban streams, spatial correlation, submersible sensors " -- Abstract
