Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Delaware Indian Medicine Practice and Folk BeliefsIn connection with such studies I have in mind also the collections of unpublished herbal and charm cures Obtained from Various remnants Of Algonkian peoples on the Atlantic seaboard by Dr. Speck (powhatan Dr. Hallowell (st. Francis Abenaki and myself (1928; Gayhead and Mashpee Indian The material from these variousgroups although possessing its own ethnic individuality, still overlaps in certain respects. And Where the practices and beliefs of many tribes reveal similarity to the folk remedies of Europeans in the New World, the problem Of interpretation Of properties is made extremely compli cated. Realizing that many of the plants and weeds are migrants from Europe to the New World, we shall have to proceed with caution in View of the fact that the Indians had an ample native pharmacology Of their own before the period Of conquest, and that an experimental spirit was always and everywhere active in revealing new cures among the invading plant hosts. It will, therefore, not be an easy task to dis tinguish between what is Indian and what is European, until we can assign the concepts and practices to one or the other.N 0 one, I believe, would deny that there has been much borrowing, as it is called, on the part of the Colonial whites from the Indians as a glance at the voluminous contents Of the United States Dispensary (1926) will reveal. In the north this process was initiated by the French who accompanied Cartier (1906, pp. 73, 77) and who would have perished from scurvy, had it not been for the therapeutic knowl edge of those Algonquin or Montagnais who supplied them with an effective medicine concocted of white cedar bark. Subsequent to this reference in the early documents many others are encountered indicat ing a deep-rooted system Of primitive medicine which was, as it should be, partly pharmacological and partly psychological.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Delaware Indians

Download or read book The Delaware Indians written by Clinton Alfred Weslager and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1972 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the best tribal histories . . . the product of decades of study by a layman archeologist-historian. With a rich blend of archeology, anthropology, Indian oral traditions (he gives us one of the best accounts of the Walum Olum, the fascinating hieroglyphics depicting the tribal origins of the Delaware), and documentary research, Weslager writes for the general reader as well as the scholar."--American Historical Review In the seventeenth century white explorers and settlers encountered a tribe of Indians calling themselves Lenni Lenape along the Delaware River and its tributaries in New Jersey, Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania, and southeastern New York. Today communities of their descendants, known as Delawares, are found in Oklahoma, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Ontario, and individuals of Delaware ancestry are mingled with the white populations in many other states. The Delaware Indians is the first comprehensive account of what happened to the main body of the Delaware Nation over the past three centuries. C. A. Weslager puts into perspective the important events in United States history in which the Delawares participated and he adds new information about the Delawares. He bridges the gap between history and ethnology by analyzing the reasons why the Delawares were repeatedly victimized by the white man.

Book Legends of the Delaware Indians and Picture Writing

Download or read book Legends of the Delaware Indians and Picture Writing written by Richard Calmit Adams and published by . This book was released on 1905 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The folklore of the Delaware Indians is fascinating for its imagery and affinity with the natural world - this illustrated book contains several of the finest legends and folk stories. Richard Calmit Adams mixes in stories of heroic prowess and bravery against the day-to-day life of the Delawares. The introductory verse features an elderly Native American man sharing some of the stories of his tribe with children; as well as talking about traditional life and everyday living, he keeps the narration entertaining with a series of legends told between the Delaware tribes for centuries. Although most of the tales are short, they are evocatively written and provide life lessons and cultural insight. Adams' retelling of the tribal folklore is greatly helped by more than forty illustrations. These depict characters in the stories, scenes of daily life, and traditional drawings and artworks concerning the hunt. Many of the legends concern animals, whom the Delawares considered to be significant representations of the natural world, with the most mighty or beautiful creatures considered to carry magical powers and blessings. After death, their bones and tusks were kept by the tribes for good fortune.

Book Sentient Entanglements and Ruptures in the Americas Human Animal Relations in the Amazon Andes and Arctic

Download or read book Sentient Entanglements and Ruptures in the Americas Human Animal Relations in the Amazon Andes and Arctic written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws together anthropological studies of human-animal relations among Indigenous Peoples in three regions of the Americas: the Andes, Amazonia and the American Arctic. Despite contrasts between the ecologies of the different regions, it finds useful comparisons between the ways that lives of human and non-human animals are entwined in shared circumstances and sentient entanglements. While studies of all three regions have been influential in scholarship on human-animal relations, the regions are seldom brought together. This volume highlights the value of examining partial connections across the American continent between human and other-than-human lives.
