Book The Effects of Compressibility on a Supersonic Mixing Layer

Download or read book The Effects of Compressibility on a Supersonic Mixing Layer written by D. Nixon and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the work is to identify the flow mechanism that cause the decrease in spreading rate of supersonic mixing layers as the convective Mach number increases and to suggest means of enhancing the mixing. Two approaches have been taken, one numerical and one analytic. A computer code, TMRC, has been used to simulate both time and space developing mixing layers to get some indication of the flow physics. To complement the numerical study a simple analysis has been developed which explains the variation of mixing rate with convective Mach number. The analysis seems to indicate that little can be done to Mach number. The analysis seems to indicate that little can be done to enhance mixing as such although the real problem of simultaneous mixing and combustion may be more amendable to control. Keywords: Mixing layers; Compressible flow; Fluid dynamics; Airflow. (KT).

Book The Effects of Compressibility on a Supersonic Mixing Layer

Download or read book The Effects of Compressibility on a Supersonic Mixing Layer written by D. Nixon and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the work is to identify the flow mechanisms that cause the decrease in spreading rate of supersonic mixing layers as the convective Mach number increases and to suggest means of enhancing the mixing. Two approaches have been taken, one numerical and one analytic. A computer code, TMRC, has been used to simulate both time and space developing two-dimensional mixing layers to get some indication of the flow physics. In addition, three-dimensional spatially developing mixing layers have been simulated. The numerical studies indicate that some accuracy problems may exist in existing algorithms. To complement the numerical study a simple analysis has been developed which explains the variation of mixing rate with convective Mach number. The analysis seems to indicate that little can be done to enhance mixing as such, although the real problem of simultaneous mixing and combustion may be more amenable to control. The analysis has been extended to include heat release as a first step in this direction.

Book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments 6

Download or read book Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Experiments 6 written by Wolfgang Rodi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-05-05 with total page 1011 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the world renowned ERCOFTAC (International Symposium on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and Measurements). The proceedings include papers dealing with the following areas of turbulence:·Eddy-viscosity and second-order RANS models ·Direct and large-eddy simulations and deductions for conventional modelling ·Measurement and visualization techniques, experimental studies ·Turbulence control ·Transition and effects of curvature, rotation and buoyancy on turbulence ·Aero-acoustics ·Heat and mass transfer and chemically reacting flows ·Compressible flows, shock phenomena ·Two-phase flows ·Applications in aerospace engineering, turbomachinery and reciprocating engines, industrial aerodynamics and wind engineering, and selected chemical engineering problems Turbulence remains one of the key issues in tackling engineering flow problems. These problems are solved more and more by CFD analysis, the reliability of which depends strongly on the performance of the turbulence models employed. Successful simulation of turbulence requires the understanding of the complex physical phenomena involved and suitable models for describing the turbulent momentum, heat and mass transfer. For the understanding of turbulence phenomena, experiments are indispensable, but they are equally important for providing data for the development and testing of turbulence models and hence for CFD software validation. As in other fields of Science, in the rapidly developing discipline of turbulence, swift progress can be achieved only by keeping up to date with recent advances all over the world and by exchanging ideas with colleagues active in related fields.

Book A Physical and Numerical Study of Three Dimensional Skewed Mixing Layers

Download or read book A Physical and Numerical Study of Three Dimensional Skewed Mixing Layers written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of skewing the two freestreams on the development of a compressible mixing layer was studied. The results of stability analysis show that skewing has the simultaneous effect of increasing the effective velocity ratio, which is a destabilizing effect, and increasing the effective, convective Mach number, which is a stabilizing effect. Direct numerical simulations of a spatially evolving mixing layer with equal velocity magnitude but skewed in opposite directions were conducted to study the non-linear evolution. Three skewing angles were considered: 30, 60, and 90 deg. For the low skewing angle cases, the mixing layer rolls up and forms a pattern of streamwise vortices. For the 90 deg case, vortex breakdown was observed, which significantly enhances the mixing. For high Mach numbers, oblique waves are more unstable which form a pattern of streamwise vortices with increasing spanwise undulation. The skewing effect can be practically realized by adding swirl to a circular mixing layer. Results of stability analysis show that adding a small amount of swirl near the center of the mixing layer significantly enhances the maximum amplification rate, and the enhancement sustains under compressible conditions. The disturbance energy budget shows that a significant of disturbance energy is extracted from the shear in the swirl component.

Book Computation and Comparison of Efficient Turbulence Models for Aeronautics European Research Project ETMA

Download or read book Computation and Comparison of Efficient Turbulence Models for Aeronautics European Research Project ETMA written by Alain Dervieux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions to the BRITE-EURAM 3rd Framework Programme ETMA and extended articles of the TMA-Workshop. It focusses on turbulence modelling techniques suitable to use in typical flow configurations, with emphasis on compressibility effects and inherent unsteadiness. These methodologies are applied to the Navier-Stokes equations, involving various turbulence modelling levels from algebraic to RSM. Basic turbulent flows in aeronautics are considered; mixing layers, wall-flows (flat-plate, backward-facing step, ramp, bump), and more complex configurations (bump, aerofoil). A critical assessment of the turbulence modelling performances is offered, based on previous results and on the experimental data-base of this research programme. The ETMA results figure in the data-base constituted by all partners and organized by INRIA

Book Statistical Mechanics of Turbulent Flows

Download or read book Statistical Mechanics of Turbulent Flows written by Stefan Heinz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The simulation of technological and environmental flows is very important for many industrial developments. A major challenge related to their modeling is to involve the characteristic turbulence that appears in most of these flows. The traditional way to tackle this question is to use deterministic equations where the effects of turbulence are directly parametrized, i. e. , assumed as functions of the variables considered. However, this approach often becomes problematic, in particular if reacting flows have to be simulated. In many cases, it turns out that appropriate approximations for the closure of deterministic equations are simply unavailable. The alternative to the traditional way of modeling turbulence is to construct stochastic models which explain the random nature of turbulence. The application of such models is very attractive: one can overcome the closure problems that are inherent to deterministic methods on the basis of relatively simple and physically consistent models. Thus, from a general point of view, the use of stochastic methods for turbulence simulations seems to be the optimal way to solve most of the problems related to industrial flow simulations. However, it turns out that this is not as simple as it looks at first glance. The first question concerns the numerical solution of stochastic equations for flows of environmental and technological interest. To calculate industrial flows, 3 one often has to consider a number of grid cells that is of the order of 100 .

Book A Study of Compressible Turbulence

Download or read book A Study of Compressible Turbulence written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical simulations have been used to study the effects of compressibility on turbulence. Statistical and structural changes in turbulence are observed in both mixing layers and boundary layers due to dynamical compressibility effects. In mixing layers, the coherent large-scale vortices which dominate turbulent momentum transport change from being roughly spanwise at low convective Mach numbers to being oblique at elevated convective Mach numbers, roughly Mc> 0.7. Simulations of boundary layers have been performed up to M = 5, for adiabatic wall and mean-isothermal conditions; the latter is achieved by the computational artifice of deleting the mean dissipative heating. The mean-isothermal case experiences none of the classical compressible boundary layer effects, which are due to variable properties, and it increases the effective Mach number by lowering the near-wall sound speed. Numerous changes are observed in turbulent statistics and structures of the mean-isothermal flow, relative to low-speed flows. Perhaps the most striking change occurs in the structure of viscous sublayer streaks. The streaks are sinuous at low Mach numbers, but they become straighter at elevated Mach numbers. Features of the dilatation suggest that dynamical compressibility effects cause these changes.
