Burnout is a severe form of stress, i.e. it is the negative side of stress that leads to burnout. The difference between stress and burnout is that stress has both positive and negative outcomes as observed by Selye, 1956, whereas burnout has only negative outcomes. Talking about gender differences in the world of work is common. The dual workload many female members of our society carry is why they can be assumed to suffer from stress more as compared to the male members of the society. The present paper studies and compares burnout in college teachers in terms of gender. For the study, the author questioned 200 college teachers (100 male + 100 female) from different colleges of Patiala district. The findings show that there is significant difference in the level of burnout of male and female college teachers.

Higher education faculty are prone to burnout, with studies showing women experienced burnout at different ages than their male counterparts. Few studies have been conducted to test if age and gender could predict a high level of burnout amongst adjunct faculty in community colleges. In addition, community college adjunct faculty are known to work more than one job to meet economic needs, and the research demonstrates such a condition creates anxiety, but little discussion is present on whether the variables of age, gender, and additional jobs held may predict high levels of burnout. The purpose of this quantitative correlational study is to apply the theoretical framework of Maslach and Jackson (1981) to determine if a predictive relationship exists between the three dimensions of burnout—emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and decline in sense of personal accomplishment—and the linear combination of age, gender, and the number of additional jobs held for community college adjunct faculty. Through anonymous data collection, 247 part-time faculty from the Virginia Community College System provided demographic information and levels of the three dimensions of burnout. Based on three multiple regression models, age was the primary predictor of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, but data analysis indicated additional variables need to be considered. A weak correlation between gender and depersonalization and personal accomplishment was also ascertained, but additional variables should be considered. A small sample size hindered the generalizability of the results, but it was discovered that males and females between the ages of 26 and 50 were more likely to experience burnout.

Teacher burnout has been extinsively studied in connection with other important psychological qualities, such as perceived self-efficacy. However, little research has examined this relationship among teachers in the English as a foreign language (EFL) context. In this light, this mixed-method study was intended to a) investigate the relationship between the degree of perceived self-efficacy by Iranian EFL teachers and their professional burnout level, and b) see whether gender could make a significant difference in the teachers' burnout level. To these ends, 80 male and female Iranian EFL teachers from several high schools in Isfahan, selected through convenience sampling, participated in the study and responded to the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educator's Survey (MBI-ES) and a modified version of Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES). To triangulate the data, a semi-structured interview was also conducted with 15 teachers. Correlational and t-test data analysis showed that there was a strong significant correlation between the participants' perceived self-efficacy and their burnout level in a negative direction. The gender variable also had a modifying effect on the teachers' burnout. Female teachers, in fact, had a lower burnout level. The follow-up interview further confirmed the relationship and revealed the three main themes of mental fatigue, contact avoidance, and stress in explaining teacher burnout. The implications for school administrators and teacher educators are discussed.

Book excerpt: This unique study is the first large-scale sociological analysis of teacher burnout, linking it with alienation, commitment, and turnover in the educational profession. In the process of doing so, Anthony Gary Dworkin uncovers some startling trends that challenge previous assumptions held by public school administrators. Urban public school districts spend up to several million dollars annually on programs intended to rekindle enthusiasm among their teachers, hoping thereby to reduce the turnover rates. They also assume that enthusiastic teachers will heighten student achievement. Yet data presented in Teacher Burnout in the Public Schools challenge these suppositions. Dworkin’s research shows teacher entrapment, rather than teacher turnover, as the greater problem in education today. Teachers are now more likely to spend their entire working lifetime disliking their careers (and sometimes their students), rather than quitting their jobs, and Dworkin proposes that principals, more than any other school personnel, can do much to break the functional linkage between school-related stress and teacher burnout. The author’s findings also indicate that burned-out teachers pose a minimal threat to the achievement of most children, but that they do have an adverse impact on brighter students. Teacher Burnout in the Public Schools includes an inventory of supported propositions and three levels of policy recommendations. These important policy recommendations suggest substantial organizational changes in the nature of the training of public school teachers in the college educational curriculum, in the teacher employment and deployment practices of school districts, as well as in the administrative style of school principals.
