Book excerpt: With a sample of approximately 89 million BB pairs collected with the BABAR detector, we perform a search for B meson decays into pairs of charmless vector mesons ([phi], [rho], and K*). We measure the branching fractions, determine the degree of longitudinal polarization, and search for CP violation asymmetries in the processes B 2![phi]K*, B° 2![phi]K*°, B+ 2![rho]°K*+, and B+ 2![rho]°[rho]+. We also set an upper limit on the branching fraction for the decay B° 2![rho]°[rho]°.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work originated in a series of lectures on meson and baryon ex cited states which I gave at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in the fall of 1962. The notes of these lectures were issued as a Stanford Uni versity report (SLAC-13) in March, 1963. In the fall of 1963, I gave a revised set of lectures on meson and baryon spectroscopy at Indiana University. In both cases, the talks were given primarily for experi mental physicists. In preparing the notes of these talks for pUblication, I have added some introductory material on pions, nucleons, kaons, and hyperons. My main emphasis is on the experimental facts concerning the spectros copy of the mesons and baryons and on the use of conservation laws in their interpretation. I have either mentioned briefly or omitted entirely explanations which depend on dynamical models. Although I have given a number of facts about the electromagnetic and weak decays of some mesons and baryons, I have not discussed the theory of these decays. This is not a comprehensive review of the subject of the strongly interacting particles, and the list of references is not complete. Also, I have not always devoted time to a subject in proportion to its impor tance, but have spent more time on topics which have particularly interested me. Nevertheless, I hope that I have provided a useful summary of the most important facts about the spectroscopy of the mesons and baryons.

Book excerpt: We present the measurement of the ratios of branching fractions B(B ° -+ D-r +) to B(Bo -+ D--+), and B(B2 -+ OD-rr+rr - ) to B(Bo -- D-urx+r+-r- ). We analyze data taken with the CDF II detector that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 355 pb - 1 in pp collisions at V = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using a novel displaced track trigger we reconstruct 494 ± 28 B° -+ D;-r+ decays, 8098 + 114 BO -4 D-r + decays, 159 + 17 B° -+ D;-rr+7+rr- decays, and 3288 ± 76 Bo - D-rr++T77r- decays. Using the world average value of the B°-to-Bo production ratio fs/fd = 0.259 ± 0.038, we determine the ratios of branching fractions B(Bo -+ D-r +) -= 1.13 ± 0.08(stat.) ± 0.05(syst.) + 0.15(BR) ± 0.17(PR), B(Bo -+ D-rr+) B(Bo -+ D -rr+ r+rx- ) (= 1.01 ± 0.11(stat.) ± 0.06(syst.) ± 0.14(BR) B(Bo -+ D-7r-+r + + 0.15(PR), ri- ) where the uncertainties labeled BR and PR refer to the uncertainty on the D meson branching fractions and the production ratio fs fd, respectively.

Book Measurement of the Branching Fraction for Inclusive Semileptonic B Meson Decays

Download or read book Measurement of the Branching Fraction for Inclusive Semileptonic B Meson Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A largely model-independent measurement of the inclusive electron momentum spectrum and branching fraction for semileptonic decays of B mesons is presented based on data recorded at the[Upsilon](4S) resonance with the BABAR detector. Backgrounds from secondary charm decays are separated from prompt B decays using charge and angular correlations between the electron from one B meson and a high momentum electron tag from the second B meson. The resulting branching fraction is[Beta](B[yields] Xe[nu])= (10.87[+-] 0.18(stat)[+-] 0.30(syst))%. Based on this measurement we determine the CKM matrix elementV[sub cb].

Book Scalar Meson Effects in Radiative Decays of Vector Mesons

Book excerpt: The role of scalar mesons in radiative vector meson decays is investigated. The effects of scalar-isoscalar f_{0}(980) and scalar-isovector a_{0}(980) mesons are studied in the mechanism of the radiative Phi->pi{+}pi{-}gamma and phi->pi{0}eta gamma decays, respectively. A phenomenological approach is used to study the radiative phi->pi{+}p{-}gamma decay by considering the contributions of sigma-meson, rho-meson and f_{0}-meson. The interference effects between different contributions are analyzed and the branching ratio for this decay is calculated. The radiative phi->pi{0}eta gamma decay is studied within the framework of a phenomenological approach in which the contributions of rho-meson, chiral loop and a_{0}-meson are considered. The interference effects between different contributions are examined and the coupling constants g_{phi a_{0} gamma} and g_{a_{0}K{+}K{-}} are estimated using the experimental branching ratio for the phi->pi{0}eta gamma decay. Furthermore, the radiative rho{0}pi{+}pi{-}gamma$ and rho{0}->pi{0}pi{0}gamma decays are studied to investigate the role of scalar-isoscalar sigma-meson. The branching ratios of the rho{0}->pi{+}pi{-}gamma and rho{0}->pi{0}pi{0}gamma decays are calculated using a phenomenological approach by adding to the amplitude calculated within the framework of chiral perturbation theory and vector meson dominance the amplitude of sigma-meson intermediate state. In all the decays studied the scalar meson intermediate states make important contributions to the overall amplitude.

Book Radiative Decays of the B Meson

Download or read book Radiative Decays of the B Meson written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The radiative decays of the B meson to the final states K*(892)[gamma] and[rho](770)[gamma] proceed through virtual effective flavor-changing neutral current processes which are sensitive to contributions from high mass scales from within the Standard Model of particle interactions and from possible new physics. In the context of the Standard Model, these transitions are of interest in probing the weak interaction behavior of the top quark. In particular, the ratio of branching fractions for the two processes can be used to extract the ratio of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elementsV[sub td]/V[sub ts]. Potential new physics contributions in these virtual transitions may induce new sources of direct CP violation and enhancement or suppression of the rate of these processes. The B[yields] K*[gamma] is a manifestation of the b[yields] s[gamma] radiative transition. This process has been previously observed by the CLEO collaboration and its branching fraction measured. While the theoretical prediction for the inclusive rate of b[yields] s[gamma] transitions is more robust than that of the exclusive B[yields] K*[gamma], the prospects for precise measurements of[Beta][B[yields] K*[gamma]] and direct CP violation in this channel has attracted considerable attention. The analysis described here represents an improved measurement of the B[yields] K*[gamma] branching factions and a more sensitive search for direct CP violation. In 22.7 x 10[sup 6] B[bar B] events collected by the BABAR detector in 1999-2000, we measure:[Beta][B[sup 0][yields] K*[sup 0][gamma]]= 4.23[+-] 0.40(stat.)[+-] 0.22(syst.) x 10[sup -5] and[Beta][B[sup+][yields] K*[sup+][gamma]]= 3.83[+-] 0.62(stat.)[+-] 0.22(syst.) x 10[sup -5]. We find no evidence for direct CP violation in the decays and constrain -0.170

This book was released on 2001 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the results of searches for B decays to charmless two-body final states containing [eta] or [omega] mesons, based on 20.7 fb−1 of data collected with the BABAR detector. We find the branching fractions [Beta](B 2![eta] K) = (70 ± 8 ± 5) x 10−6, [Beta](B° 2![eta] K°) = (42−11{sup +13} ± 4) x 10−6, and [Beta](B+ 2![omega][pi]+) = (6.6{sub -1.8}{sup +2.1} ± 0.7) x 10−6 where the first error quoted is statistical and the second systematic. We give measurements of four additional modes for which the 90% confidence level upper limits are [Beta](B° 2![omega] K°)

Book Observation of B Meson Decays to OmegaK and Improved Measurements for Omegarho and Omegaf0

Download or read book Observation of B Meson Decays to OmegaK and Improved Measurements for Omegarho and Omegaf0 written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present measurements of B meson decays to the final states [omega]K*, [omega][rho], and [omega]f0, where K* indicates a spin 0, 1, or 2 strange meson. The data sample corresponds to 465 x 106 B{bar B} pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II ee− collider at SLAC. B meson decays involving vector-scalar, vector-vector, and vector-tensor final states are analyzed; the latter two shed new light on the polarization of these final states. We measure the branching fractions for nine of these decays; five are observed for the first time. For most decays we also measure the charge asymmetry and, where relevant, the longitudinal polarization f{sub L}.
