Book Study of Beam Synchronization at JLEIC

Download or read book Study of Beam Synchronization at JLEIC written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ion collider ring of Jefferson Labs Electron-Ion Collider (JLEIC) accommodates a wide range of ion energies, from 20 to 100 GeV for protons or from 8 to 40 GeV per nucleon for lead ions. In this medium energy range, ions are not fully relativistic, which means values of their relativistic beta are slightly below 1, leading to an energy dependence of revolution time of the collider ring. On the other hand, electrons with energy 3 GeV and above are already ultra-relativistic such that their speeds are effectively equal to the speed of light. The difference in speeds of colliding electrons and ions in JLEIC, when translated into a path-length difference necessary to maintain the same timing between electron and ion bunches, is quite large. In this paper, we explore schemes for synchronizing the electron and ion bunches at a collision point as the ion energy is varied.

Book The Scheme of Beam Synchronization in MEIC

Download or read book The Scheme of Beam Synchronization in MEIC written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synchronizing colliding beams at single or multiple collision points is a critical R & D issue in the design of a medium energy electron-ion collider (MEIC) at Jefferson Lab. The path-length variation due to changes in the ion energy, which varies over 20 to 100 GeV, could be more than several times the bunch spacing. The scheme adopted in the present MEIC baseline is centered on varying the number of bunches (i.e., harmonic number) stored in the collider ring. This could provide a set of discrete energies for proton or ions such that the beam synchronization condition is satisfied. To cover the ion energy between these synchronized values, we further propose to vary simultaneously the electron ring circumference and the frequency of the RF systems in both collider rings. We also present in this paper the requirement of frequency tunability of SRF cavities to support the scheme.

Book Applications of Superconductivity

Download or read book Applications of Superconductivity written by H. Weinstock and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, in essence the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute with the same title, is designed to provide in-depth coverage of many, but not all, of the major current applications of superconductivity, and of many that still are being developed. It will be of value to scientists and engineers who have interests in the research and production aspects of the technology, as well as in the applications themselves. The ftrst three chapters (by Clarke, Vrba and Wikswo) are devoted to an understanding of the principles, fabrication and uses of SQUID magnetometers and gradiometers, with the greatest emphasis on biomagnetism and nondestructive evaluation (NDE). For the most part, traditional low-temperature superconductor (LTS) SQUIDs are used, but particularly for NDE, high-temperature superconductor (HTS) SQUIDs are proving useful and often more convenient. The succeeding three chapters (by Przybysz, Likharev and Chaloupka) cover broader aspects of superconducting electronics. The ftrst two of these deal primarily with digital L TS circuits, while the third discusses in great detail passive component applications using HTS materials. Currently, HTS ftlters are undergoing intense J3-site testing at cellular telephone base stations. While it is clear that HTS ftlters outperform conventional ftlters in reducing signal loss and allowing for more channels in a given bandwidth, it isn't yet certain that the cellular telephone industry sees sufficient economic beneftts to make a ftrm decision to use HTS ftlters universally in its systems. If this application is generally adapted, the market for these ftlters should be quite large.

Book Superconducting Accelerator Magnets

Download or read book Superconducting Accelerator Magnets written by K.-H. Mess and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main topic of the book are the superconducting dipole and quadrupole magnets needed in high-energy accelerators and storage rings for protons, antiprotons or heavy ions. The basic principles of low-temperature superconductivity are outlined with special emphasis on the effects which are relevant for accelerator magnets. Properties and fabrication methods of practical superconductors are described. Analytical methods for field calculation and multipole expansion are presented for coils without and with iron yoke. The effect of yoke saturation and geometric distortions on field quality is studied. Persistent magnetization currents in the superconductor and eddy currents the copper part of the cable are analyzed in detail and their influence on field quality and magnet performance is investigated. Superconductor stability, quench origins and propagation and magnet protection are addressed. Some important concepts of accelerator physics are introduced which are needed to appreciate the demanding requirements on field quality in large storage rings. The operational experience with the superconducting HERA collider serves as an illustration. Finally superconducting correction coils and practical construction and fabrication methods of accelerator magnets are discussed. The physical and technical principles described in the book are substantiated with a wealth of experimental data on multipoles, persistent- and eddy-current effects, quench performance and much more.

Book Upgrading the Space Shuttle

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1999-02-21
  • ISBN : 0309063825
  • Pages : 82 pages

Download or read book Upgrading the Space Shuttle written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-02-21 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The space shuttle is a unique national resource. One of only two operating vehicles that carries humans into space, the space shuttle functions as a scientific laboratory and as a base for construction, repair, and salvage missions in low Earth orbit. It is also a heavy-lift launch vehicle (able to deliver more than 18,000 kg of payload to low Earth orbit) and the only current means of returning large payloads to Earth. Designed in the 1970s, the shuttle has frequently been upgraded to improve safety, cut operational costs, and add capability. Additional upgrades have been proposed-and some are under way-to combat obsolescence, further reduce operational costs, improve safety, and increase the ability of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to support the space station and other missions. In May 1998, NASA asked the National Research Council (NRC) to examine the agency's plans for further upgrades to the space shuttle system. The NRC was asked to assess NASA's method for evaluating and selecting upgrades and to conduct a top-level technical assessment of proposed upgrades.

Book Increasing the AGS Polarization

Download or read book Increasing the AGS Polarization written by A.D. Krisch and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2003-06-11 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ann Arbor Workshop on Increasing the AGS Polarization discusses the surprising spin effects discovered at lower energy accelerators, making the new multi-hundred-GeV RHIC polarized proton collider especially important. The four Siberian snakes in the two RHIC rings successfully preserved most polarization during acceleration and storage; RHIC's main problem was the low polarization injected from the AGS. The Workshop determined a quick and practical plan for increasing the AGS polarization by using three techniques to overcome the three types of depolarizing resonances.

Book Stereographic Projection Technique

Download or read book Stereographic Projection Technique written by P R LEYSHON and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 1996 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sets out to provide a simple introduction to the subject by means of illustrations and exercises, encouraging the student to visualise the problems concerned in three dimensions. Once an appreciation is gained of the nature of the problem, the formal solution using the projection becomes both logical and straightforward. The stereographic projection is an essential tool of the structural geologist which allows three-dimensional orientation data to be both represented and manipulated. It provides a way of graphically displaying the data collected. This is essential for the recognition and interpretation of patterns of preferred orientation. 'This is the book all teachers of stereographic projections have been waiting for! It is 115 pages of well-presented, clearly explained, generally well-illustrated text - in short it is user-friendly.' - Episodes - Int. Geoscience Newsmagazine, April 1996

Book Signal Processing of Power Quality Disturbances

Download or read book Signal Processing of Power Quality Disturbances written by Math H. J. Bollen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-08-04 with total page 883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridging the gap between power quality and signal processing This innovative new text brings together two leading experts, one from signal processing and the other from power quality. Combining their fields of expertise, they set forth and investigate various types of power quality disturbances, how measurements of these disturbances are processed and interpreted, and, finally, the use and interpretation of power quality standards documents. As a practical aid to readers, the authors make a clear distinction between two types of power quality disturbances: * Variations: disturbances that are continuously present * Events: disturbances that occur occasionally A complete analysis and full set of tools are provided for each type of disturbance: * Detailed examination of the origin of the disturbance * Signal processing measurement techniques, including advanced techniques and those techniques set forth in standards documents * Interpretation and analysis of measurement data * Methods for further processing the features extracted from the signal processing into site and system indices The depth of coverage is outstanding: the authors present and analyze material that is not covered in the standards nor found in the scientific literature. This text is intended for two groups of readers: students and researchers in power engineering who need to use signal processing techniques for power system applications, and students and researchers in signal processing who need to perform power system disturbance analyses and diagnostics. It is also highly recommended for any engineer or utility professional involved in power quality monitoring.
