The present concentrations of methane are nearly three times higher than several hundred years ago. Methane affects the stratospheric ozone layer and the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere, which in turn control the concentrations of many man-made and natural gases in the atmosphere. While carbon dioxide is by far the dominant cause of the rise in global average temperatures, methane also plays a significant role because it absorbs more energy per unit mass than carbon dioxide does, giving it a disproportionately large effect on global radiative forcing. In addition to contributing to climate change, methane also affects human health as a precursor to ozone pollution in the lower atmosphere. Improving Characterization of Anthropogenic Methane Emissions in the United States summarizes the current state of understanding of methane emissions sources and the measurement approaches and evaluates opportunities for methodological and inventory development improvements. Previous studies have shown aerated forests soils to be net sinks of atmospheric CH4 and sources of carbon dioxide. While much research has focused on the role of forest soils as CO2 sources and CH4 sinks, few studies have utilized 13C-isotope studies to clarify the nature of subsurface CO2 production and CH4 consumption. The present study, carried out in 3 temperate forest environments on Vancouver Island during 2006 and 2007, and a boreal forest in northern Quebec in 2005, is intended to address this paucity of information. The isotope and concentration data corroborates previous studies in suggesting that both temperate and boreal forest environments act as net CH4 sinks and CO2 sources. No clear evidence of methanogenesis is apparent in either Vancouver Island or northern Quebec, where the isotopic composition of subsurface CH4 is influenced by diffusive and biological fractionation. Near-surface photosynthetic uptake may have a strong influence on the isotopic composition of soil CO2 and the resultant fluxes, acting to reduce apparent fluxes due to CO2 consumption. Intra-site variability of CH4 and CO2 fluxes indicates that the use of two static chambers in a single site, while sufficient for the confirmation of gas uptake or emission, may be less adequate in the determination of actual rates of efflux/influx. Future studies should address this by either sampling a larger area, installing a greater number of chambers, or by utilizing entirely different methods, such as the use of eddy covariance techniques.

Book excerpt: The goal of isotopic studies of atmospheric methane is the determination of the relative fluxes of the various sources of different isotopic composition. Because of the large number of generic anthropogenic source types it is not possible to determine their relative strengths based on carbon-13 data alone. However, by combining sources of similar isotopic composition (as well as similar origin), and utilizing results from other studies it is possible to calculate some important features of the atmospheric CH4 cycle. The 13C/12C ratio of atmospheric CH4 is increasing in both the southern and northern hemisphere with a faster rate in the former. Analysis of these results shows that the increasing fluxes of CH4 from biomass burning in the southern hemisphere contribute about 60% of the rate of increasing concentration. In the past decade the trend in the northern hemisphere can be interpreted as caused by both increasing and decreasing fluxes from the natural wetlands sources. 26 refs., 2 figs., 4 tabs.
