Book Study of an Ignition System for Gasoline Engines Consisting in the Corona Discharge Effect

Download or read book Study of an Ignition System for Gasoline Engines Consisting in the Corona Discharge Effect written by Javier Farré Cagiao and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project consists in the research of a way on improving the efficiency of gasoline engines. To achieve this goal the project will be focused in the ignition system, because the actual system only gives control on the moment the burn starts, but not to what happens while the fuel is burning, so the objective is look for a way of ignition that is completely capable of controlling the burnt in the combustion chamber. By achieving this goal, the efficiency of the burnt in the engine would be increased, and also the emissions would be more stable. In order to achieve the objective of the project, the Corona Discharge effect has been considered in order to apply it as an alternative spark plug for the engine. By having assumed this technology as the one chosen to improve the ignition, in order to achieve this project's goals a wide research of the actual state of art of corona discharge and how to control it has been done. The project will look at all the actual research completed regarding alternative ignition systems, investigating how the spark is generated in each of them and how they are controlled. After all the research, an investigation is made in the Corona Discharge generation, finalizing with an ignition system modification to allow the implementation of this effect in conventional engines.

Book Designing and Testing of a Corona Discharge Ignition Device

Download or read book Designing and Testing of a Corona Discharge Ignition Device written by Guillem Bagaria Portet and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ignition systems have fundamentally remained unchanged since the dawn of the internal combustion engine industry. In order to respond to new legislation, the necessary improvement on fuel economy and lowering emissions, new technologies are being considered to attain increasingly strict parameters. One of such technologies is the use of a corona discharge ignition system. Corona discharge or partial discharge is a phenomenon where high voltage combined with high frequency and high spatial gradient creates an ionic plasma region around the electrode with high ionizing effect on the surrounding medium. This phenomenon has been recorded and studied in the past, but has only recently been proposed as an ignition source, with several interesting advantages over century-old sparkplug arc ignition technology. The matter of this thesis is to analyze the physics of the phenomenon, to construct a device capable of performing measurements on the phenomenon, and ultimately to test if such an ignition device is possible and useful in the industry. Furthermore, any results determined by this thesis will be able to set a starting point for further research on the matter.

Book CORONA DISCHARGE IGNITION FOR ADVANCED STATIONARY NATURAL GAS ENGINES

Download or read book CORONA DISCHARGE IGNITION FOR ADVANCED STATIONARY NATURAL GAS ENGINES written by Dr. Paul D. Ronney and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ignition source was constructed that is capable of producing a pulsed corona discharge for the purpose of igniting mixtures in a test chamber. This corona generator is adaptable for use as the ignition source for one cylinder on a test engine. The first tests were performed in a cylindrical shaped chamber to study the characteristics of the corona and analyze various electrode geometries. Next a test chamber was constructed that closely represented the dimensions of the combustion chamber of the test engine at USC. Combustion tests were performed in this chamber and various electrode diameters and geometries were tested. The data acquisition and control system hardware for the USC engine lab was updated with new equipment. New software was also developed to perform the engine control and data acquisition functions. Work is underway to design a corona electrode that will fit in the new test engine and be capable igniting the mixture in one cylinder at first and eventually in all four cylinders. A test engine was purchased for the project that has two spark plug ports per cylinder. With this configuration it will be possible to switch between corona ignition and conventional spark plug ignition without making any mechanical modifications.

Book Effects of Corona Spark and Surface Discharges on Ignition Delay and Deflagration to Detonation Times in Pulsed Detonation Engines Postprint

Download or read book Effects of Corona Spark and Surface Discharges on Ignition Delay and Deflagration to Detonation Times in Pulsed Detonation Engines Postprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the research described herein is to compare the ignition delays in an experimental pulsed detonation engine produced by thermal and non-thermal ignitions. The commercial thermal ignition has a pulse duration of about 1 microsec, whereas the non-thermal ignitions have pulse durations of 100 nanosec. Ignition delay is an important factor, along with fill and purge times, that limit the maximum repetition rate and thrust of pulsed detonation engines. For stoichiometric fuel-air mixtures with aviation gasoline at 1 atmosphere and 360 - 480 K, an ignition delay of 6 millisec was observed with a non-thermal ignition, whereas the ignition delay was 11 millisec with an aftermarket automotive ignition. By replacing the resistive cable and resistor of the aftermarket ignition with a non-resistive cable and surface discharge igniter, its ignition delay was reduced to 7 millisec, which is comparable to that produced by the non-thermal ignitions.

Book Experimental Investigations on Particle Number Emissions from GDI Engines

Download or read book Experimental Investigations on Particle Number Emissions from GDI Engines written by Markus Bertsch and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses experimental investigations to reduce particle number emissions from gasoline engines with direct injection. Measures on a single cylinder research engine with combined usage of a particle number measurement system, a particle size distribution measurement system as well as optical diagnostics and thermodynamic analysis enable an in-depth assessment of particle formation and oxidation. Therefore, numerous optical diagnostic techniques for spray visualisation (Mie-scattering, High-Speed PIV) and soot detection (High-Speed-Imaging, Fiber optical diagnostics) are deployed. Two injectors with different hydraulic flows but identical spray-targeting are characterised and compared by measurements in a pressurised chamber. The operation at higher engine load and low engine speed is in the focus of the experimental work at the engine test bench. Thereby, the low flow velocities in the combustion chamber, caused by the low engine speed, as well as the large amount of fuel injected are major challenges for the mixture formation process. A substantial part of the thesis thus focusses on the detailed analysis of the mixture formation process, which is consisting of fuel injection, interaction of the in-cylinder charge motion with the fuel injected and the fuel properties. Measures for the optimisation of the mixture formation process and the minimisation of the particle number emissions are analysed and evaluated. The charge motion is manipulated by the impression of a directed flow, the variation of the valve timings and valve open curve. The injection process is influenced by a reduction of the hydraulic flow of the injector and an increase of the injection pressure up to 50 MPa. The investigations show fundamental effects and potentials of different variation parameters concerning their emissions reduction potential at the exemplary operation at high engine load. Due to the simultaneous analysis of the in-cylinder charge motion and a thermodynamic analysis, the results can be transferred to different engines.
