In addition, the latter chapters (12-19) have been reorganized for greater ease of use. There is also more coverage of hot topics like recombinant DNA technology, genetic engineering, cloning, stem cell research, and HIV. In support of this, "How Would You Vote?" questions appear at the beginning and end of each chapter. Chapters begin with an opening story-focusing on a controversial issue. After the story, the "How Would You Vote?" box directs students to the website to voice their opinion. On the website the issue is summarized, an InfoTrac activity with questions involving the issue is provided, and students cast their vote and see tallied results of the voting. Additional student support includes Human GeneticsNOW, a password-protected website integrated with the Seventh Edition that provides students with access to diagnostic Pre-Tests and Post-Tests for each chapter. It automatically generates customized learning plans for students, directing them to text information and ancillaries that help them master specific concepts. Active Figures in the text, indicated by a media icon, have corresponding narrated animations on the Human GeneticsNOW site that are included in the customized Learning Plan along with additional animations and media assets. For instructors, a Multimedia Manager provides the all of the art and photos from the text in PowerPoint form, and, lectures can be further enhanced by using animations and CNN videos on human heredity topics.

Download or read book One Renegade Cell written by Robert A Weinberg and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2008-08-04 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer research has reached a major turning point. The quality and quantity of information gathered about this disease in the past twenty years has revolutionized our understanding of its origins and behavior. No one is better qualified to comment on these dramatic leaps forward than molecular biologist Robert A. Weinberg, director of one of the leading cancer research centers in the world. In One Renegade Cell , Weinberg presents an accessible and state-of-the-art account of how the disease begins and how, one day, it will be cured. Weinberg tells how the roots of cancer were uncovered in 1909 and when the first cancer-causing virus was discovered. He then moves forward to the discovery of the role of chemical carcinogens and radiation in triggering cancer, and relates the remarkable story of the discoveries of oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, the master controllers of normal and malignant cell proliferation. This book, which presumes little prior knowledge of biology, describes the revolution in biomedical research that has finally uncovered the forces driving malignant growth. Drawing on insights that simply were not available until recently, the discoveries presented in One Renegade Cell have already begun to profoundly alter the way that we diagnose and treat human cancers.

Book Understanding Abnormal Psychology

Download or read book Understanding Abnormal Psychology written by Pamilla Ramsden and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Abnormal Psychology provides a thorough understanding of abnormal psychology with a focus on the integration of psychology, biology and health. It goes beyond a descriptive overview of clinical disorders to provide a critical appreciation of the multifaceted aspects of mental illness. Each disorder is clearly and succinctly explained with the support of case studies. These examples are then used to introduce the debates surrounding current research, the biology of abnormal disorders and standards of treatment. The bridge between the biological elements of brain functioning and the psychological mechanisms that are responsible for coping and adjustment is thoroughly explored. This valuable consideration of the range of elements involved in the diagnosis and treatment of clinical disorders will provide you with a broad and critical understanding of this complex and fascinating field. The companion website has a number of useful features for students, including a flipcard glossary of key terms from the textbook and a test bank of interactive self-assessment multiple-choice questions.

Book Practical Relativity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard N. Henriksen
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2011-07-26
  • ISBN : 111995634X
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book Practical Relativity written by Richard N. Henriksen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-07-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is intended to serve as lecture material for courses on relativity at undergraduate level. Although there has been much written on special relativity the present book will emphasize the real applications of relativity. In addition, it will be physically designed with the use of box summaries so as to allow easy access of practical results. The book will be composed of eight chapters. Chapter 1 will give an introduction to special relativity that is the world without gravity. Implications will be presented with emphasis on time dilation and the Doppler shift as practical considerations. In Chapter 2, the four-vector representation of events will be introduced. The bulk of this chapter will deal with flat space dynamics. This will require the generalization of Newton's first and second laws. Some important astronomical applications will be discussed in Chapter 3 and in Chapter 4 some engineering applications of special relativity such as atomic clocks will be presented. Chapter 5 will be dedicated to the thorny question of gravity. The physical motivation of the theory must be examined and the geometrical interpretation presented. Chapter 6 will present astronomical applications of relativistic gravity. These include the usual solar system tests; light bending, time delay, gravitational red-shift, precession of Keplerian orbits. Chapter 7 will be dedicated to relativistic cosmology. Many of the standard cosmological concepts will be introduced, being mathematically simple but conceptually subtle. The concluding chapter will be largely dedicated to the global positioning system as an engineering problem that requires both inertial and gravitational relativity. The large interferometers designed as gravitational wave telescopes will be discussed here.
