Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Bedorough was a prolific author and The Atheist may stand out as his strangest piece of work. This book is set up as one very long poem and yet is also a complete treatise on atheism. Bedorough begins the book by narrating the story of another man. Whether or not the man is real or fictional for the purposes of storytelling is not clear. Whether or not he claims it is another man to protect himself from potential backlash is also not clear. The poem begins: "These rugged rhymes make no pretence as story, nor seek to celebrate a hero's glory. The atheist whose life inspired my pen lived, at least outwardly, like other men. 'Twere vain his physical adventures to narrate, more to his mental moods these lines relate." Bedborough is essentially saying that he won't relay a familiar tale but the thoughts of the atheist. It is almost certain that by the end of the book Bedborough is hoping to either sway readers into agreeing with his atheist friend, or is hoping to show that the man was a fool. I guess it is up to the reader as to which to believe which ultimately depends on the strength of the prose by the author. Can a story be told with no action and only thoughts of an individual? Bedorough attempts to prove that it is possible in The Atheist. Overall, this book is an interesting read for someone looking to explore psychology and spirituality from a new perspective. This book is also interesting for readers looking to review an alternative form of storytelling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atheism in Philosophy: And Other Essays The moment we begin to speculate about the universe, there arises the question Of origin. Phi losophy, even atheistic philosophy, cannot stop short Of the primordia rerum; it wants to know unde Natura creet res, auctet alatque. The arch-atheist of antiquity could not rest in a given phenomenal world, but pushed his inquiry, says his great commentator,1 extra flammantia moenia mundi. The question Whence? Is found to be involved in the questions What? And How? And here' it is that philosophic atheists differ among themselves almost as widely as they dif fer from theists. I select as illustrations two prominent examples, an ancient and a modern, representing two Opposite types, -- Epicurus and Schopenhauer. Book My Path to Atheism Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Path to Atheism Classic Reprint written by Annie Wood Besant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Annie Besant, My Path to Atheism is one of the most well known works of this notable British writer and women's rights activist. In this collection of essays written over a five-year period, Besant traces her path to atheism while simultaneously outlining her theosophist philosophies. The first essay presented in this collection, On the Deity of Jesus of Nazareth was written before Besant had officially parted with the Church of England. It is a signpost marking the author's final split with Christianity, and is an appropriate first essay in this book. The essay relies heavily on the author's knowledge of the stories of The Bible, as she displays what she interprets as weaknesses in the story of Jesus. Many of the essays in this collection are written in a similar vein to the first. Besant was clearly a scholar of the Bible, and she is thus able to form compelling arguments against many of the stories and theories of Christianity. Later essays see Besant writing persuasively against religious education and blind faith in a set of religious values. On the Nature and the Existence of God is perhaps the most important essay of the collection, in which the author most clearly outlines her argument for atheism. "We know nothing beyond Nature," Besant states, "We judge of the future by the present and the past." My Path to Atheism is an essential work by one of the most noted atheists of the early twentieth century. Those willing to invest time and effort into this collection will undoubtedly be influenced in one direction or another by its arguments. This is a worthwhile read for both believers and atheists alike, and is thus highly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Agnosticism and Theism in the Nineteenth Century

This book was released on 2018-02-18 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agnosticism and Theism in the Nineteenth Century: An Historical Study of Religious Thought The Lectures contained in this volume represent the last of Richard Armstrong's contributions to the chosen subject of his thought and study. They were prepared for popular audiences, and had been received at Nottingham and Northampton, the only places in which they were delivered, with an interest that gave promise of far reaching usefulness and influence. It was felt that they displayed in a high degree all the best characteristics of Mr. Armstrong's ex positions. They are indeed models of lucidity, candour, and sincerity, and in the largeness and generosity of their appreciation and sympathy they show that Mr. Armstrong's mind was deepening and mellowing as well as strengthening up to the very end. Book A Manual for Creating Atheists

Download or read book A Manual for Creating Atheists written by Peter Boghossian and published by Pitchstone Publishing (US&CA). This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, the faithful have honed proselytizing strategies and talked people into believing the truth of one holy book or another. Indeed, the faithful often view converting others as an obligation of their faith—and are trained from an early age to spread their unique brand of religion. The result is a world broken in large part by unquestioned faith. As an urgently needed counter to this tried-and-true tradition of religious evangelism, A Manual for Creating Atheists offers the first-ever guide not for talking people into faith—but for talking them out of it. Peter Boghossian draws on the tools he has developed and used for more than 20 years as a philosopher and educator to teach how to engage the faithful in conversations that will help them value reason and rationality, cast doubt on their religious beliefs, mistrust their faith, abandon superstition and irrationality, and ultimately embrace reason.

This book was released on 2017-06 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Atheism Under Its Forms of Pantheism, Materialism, Secularism, Development, and Natural Laws A treatise on the Being and Perfections of God, as the Creator and Governor of the world, can scarcely be adapted to the exigencies of modern society, unless it be framed with express reference to the existing forms of unbelief, and the prevailing tendencies both of philosophical thought and of popular Opinion. It is quite possible, indeed, to construct a scheme of evidence on this subject out of the amme materials which the storehouse of nature affords, without entering into any discussion of the questions, whether Physical or Meta physical, which have been raised respecting it. But this method, although it might be sufficient for many, perhaps for most, Of our readers - for all, indeed, who come to the study of the subject with reflective but unsophisticated minds - could scarcely be expected to meet the case or to satisfy the wants of those who stand most in need of instruction; the men, and especially the young men, in all educated communities, who, imbued with the spirit of philosophical speculation, and instructed, more or less fully, in the principles of modern science, have been led, under the influence of certain celebrated names, to adopt Opinions which prevent them from seriously considering any theological question, and to regard the whole subject of religion with indifference or contempt, as one that lies beyond the possible range of science, - the only legitimate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Atheism of the Heart: And Other Sermons Psalm XIV: I. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. With the Hebrew, the idea of wisdom included virtue and piety. A man who was not Virtuous and pious was a fool. The Hebrew word here rendered fool means a Simpleton, an imbecile a moral Simpleton, a moral im becile. For the Hebrew had other words for the folly of the idiot and the madman. This title does not relate to a man's mental capacity, but to the moral use he makes of it. And, in this sense, the more a man knows with out knowing God, the greater fool he is. With the He brew, every man was gauged by his estimate of God. And if he said there was no God, .it was the surest test that could be applied to him denying God he betrayed himself to be a fool. It fixed him as a moral Simpleton, an imbecile; not weak as we say, in his upper story, meaning the brain, but weak in the moral foundations of his nature 3 where, if there is weakness, it affects the whole structure.
